Hi Caz,

My! And after bringing those 'hefties' into the world you're still here to tell the tale! You are superwoman! Ha ha! My boy was 8lb 0oz, and I laboured for 25 hours to bring him into the world. I pushed him out without need for C-Sections, but had to have a little help from some Andersons Forceps. We were treated marvellously in hospital and afterwards, both if us.

He's now 25, he'll be 26 in November.

How old are your children, Caz?

She is a willowy 5'7'' now though..must be all the spaghetti she had as a child

well they are 9 10 november 10 -11 november they were close together 10lb baby is know 16 looks 20 and 11lb 9oz turns 3 in 10days she si in5-6 clothes grows to quick lol cazwix

My first was 6lbs 7oz, small by comparison caz:) He was 4 weeks early so quite gald he was early really as they told me if I had gone full term he would have been a whopper! He was born by emergency c section and my treatment was shocking!!!! He was born at 8.13pm, whisked away and I didnt see him till 10am the next day. I was left lying in my hospital bed till 9.30am in total agony, I couldnt move, it was too painfull. The nurse call buzzer was left out of my reach so I couldnt call any one. I was covered in yuck and wasnt capable of cleaning myself up( the anestetic sp? left me paralised from the neck down) It was awful!
My daughter was 7lbs 6oz born naturally, and what a difference! I was up and showerd within 20 mins of giving birth and had 3 lovley days with her in the hospitals own hotel! The twist in the tale is, my daughters due date was christmas eve, and I was worried that I might need another emergency c section so I told the Drs I wanted to book myself in for a section as I didnt want to spend christmas in hospital after having yet another section. They agreed and booked me in for my section on 12 december. I went in on the 11 december for tests and the section was booked for 12.30pm the next day..........I went into natural labour at mid night, and gave birth at 12.35pm, 5 minutes after I was due to have my section!!!!

I have 3 kids and my first was 9lb 11oz and was only 19 inches long and the other 2 were 9lb 9oz, i halfed my labour time with each, 6 hours 1st , 3 with 2nd and 1 and half hours with the 3rd.

My little girl was 5lbs and 9oz which is smallish these days but normal for our family. She did look little when she came out but grew very fast and is now tall for her age.

My first little boy was 7lb 6oz & labour was fine. My second boy I had at home....I'd managed to suck through 2 bottles of gas & air before he was born & felt every twing of pain, he weighed in at 8lb 11 and1/2oz (don't forget the 1/2) he was my heaviest & I remeber feeling like all the size was in his head!!

My third & last was my little girl who weighed 8lb2oz....my tail bone snapped in birth...the sound of breaking bones is still strong in my memory (she is only 21 months old though;)) my last birth also started on Friday 13th as did many others that night in December....I can remember a corridor of screams & only 2 midwives on duty rushed off their feet.....what a scarey sacrey night that was & I will not be having anymore babies [:o]

Funny though how true it is that the feeling you have for your baby tottaly out weighs the pain of birth!!!

reading all that makes my labours sound like shelling peas LOL
Mine were 6 11 1/2 and 7 4 and the combined length of labour for both of them was 1 hr and 50 mins, which means i had ie very easy compared to most of you.......mind you the castor oil on the second one may have helped a bit hehe

I dont have any children but when i was born i weighed 8lbs 7oz i am now 23 years old and weigh 8 stone 7lbs strange huh?

My first son was born on his due date and was 8 1/2 lbs born after a 21 hour labour which began with four minute apart horrid contractions, I only weigh 8 stone so, he felt pretty huge to me. He is almost 5 and weighs 50 lbs and is 120cm. My second son was 7 3/4 lbs and was born after 7 hours again I immediately had horrid contractions only 1 minute apart. I didn't know what hit me. He was 7 hours after his due date. If I'm ever brave enough to go for 3, I'm going to put £100 on it being born on its due date.

Eve was 9lb Exactly i laboured for 5 hours, so it says on the papers but i reckon it was a damn site longer than that!!!!! I am sorry to say that the after care was not that great, felt very neglected. Would not want to go to the same place again:(

Jordan was two weeks late and had to be brought on although the medical team did not believe me that he was late. They put on a lb a week for every week they are late.

He was 8lbs 13 which was very big for this little soul.

10 hours labour then my contractions disappeared at the crucial time so he had to come out by emergency forceps. At the time I did not realise we nearly lost him, 36 stitches and nurse telling off the doctor while it was all going on.

Hospital were amazing and they made such a fuss of me because I was one of five in the whole maternity hospital that breastfed. I fell in love with him instantly, he was the light and joy of my life and he is now 21.

No help at home afterwards but we were just lost in each other. I had the baby blues six weeks after due to tiredness and washing everything by hand but then we got a washing machine so things became a lot easier. Apart from that no support at home. Having Jordan stirred up the cancer cells again so six months later I had to have an operation.

If I had met the right man I would have had lots of children but it was not my destiny. Probably why I love children so much. I cried for three weeks when I turned 40 because I had decided that was the cut off point for me. I never did have the little girl Sophia so maybe another lifetime.

My first was nearly a week late, so when I started having contractions at midnight I convinced the hospital to take me in - it was still early on in the labour, so after trying unsuccessfully to sleep I lay in the bath for hours, with the midwife bringing me cups of tea!
Unfortunately, when the pain got so unbearable I needed to get out of the bath the midwives were swapping shifts and so ignored the buzzer- I can really understand how childbirth could drive someone mad with pain, and I knew if I didn't get out of that bath (beached whale as I was!) I would have retreated inside my mind from the pain, so I had to scramble out myself.
....but it wasn't until I got back on the ward that my waters broke, all over my new slippers!
Ieuan was born 3 1/2 hours later and was 7lbs, 6oz . Five days later we left the hospital - Ieuan had had jaundice & needed uv treatment, & I'd had to stay up with him the whole time as the night nurses in particular just couldn't give a damn - fortunately the day nurses were fab,especially when the baby blues set in, though I think I was exhausted after my stay and was glad to get home.
My second was born 4 years later in 1997- this time I woke at 6.30am with pains but had to keep smiling so my son wasn't scared - when my husband took me to hospital the midwife was too busy to check me before applying the tens machine, so by the time I tried it, it wasn't much good, and I resorted to gas & air again.
But you'll never believe this, when I first got the urge to push, I pushed hard, and my waters broke all over the midwife! The second push got the head out and the third push saw the whole baby! Jess was born at 9.44am and weighed 8lb 4oz.
Unfortunately, the boiler in the hospital had broken so there was no hot water!!!
Having managed for myself with cold water, we both stayed in the delivery room until 6 hours later we were able to be discharged home - to steamy hot water, fluffy towels and complete silence - at least until 6 the next morning when my son exploded into the room looking for his new baby sister!

Our older son, born on his due date after a 25 hour labour with no pain relief - boy did I want it[8D], weighed 7lb 4oz (as did I) and was born naturally in hospital where the labour care was useless (the midwife wandered in once every four hours for about 2 minutes and treated me like an inconvenience - "this labour's going to go all through the night and into tomorrow afternoon at least", "it's not your fault you can't cope", "why aren't you dressed? You're supposed to be ready to go downstairs for your epidural! Of course you don't want to push. I should know. I'm the midwife" - he was born less than an hour later and only two hours after the comment about lasting well into the next day) and the after-care was non-existent at best, appalling at worst. Breastfeeding support consisted of sitting me in a chair, dumping a pillow on my lap, dumping the baby on the pillow, waggling my boob until it was in his mouth and then walking off and leaving me to it. No explanation, no encouragement, no nothing. My husband had to go away for 4 days when he was 2 weeks old but I had lots of friends around when he wasn't there who would come round to do my cleaning for me, which he did when he was there. I was well and truly pampered at home. Shame about the hospital.

Our younger son, born two days early after a labour of less than three hours, weighed 8lbs 7.5oz (as did his dad - notice the pattern?) and was born at home. The care during labour was wonderful, the after-care was fantastic, lots of support from the midwives who even gave the boys a present each, and I still had my husband and friends around me to help with the housework.

Guess which I'd want if I were to ever consider having any more (and wasn't 4 years into my menopause at the age of 42)!

First baby 2lb 8 oz (8 weeks early, severe IUGR)
Second baby 7lb 11 oz (2 days late)
Third baby 6lb 7oz (induced 2 weeks early at my request)

After care with second two was pretty hit and miss, I think the feeling definitely is that after your first baby, you should know what you are doing and get on with it!

sorry to hear what bad experiences those of you have had, with Maternity care.
It can be difficult for us midwife's, when it is busy but no excuse for not looking after people properly with care and attention.
It is also difficult when women have a long latent phase of labour, which can take a long time, Pain is very tireing and the longer it goes on the harder it is to cope due to the tiredness.
But it is not classed as active labour until the cervix is at least 3cms dilated, and there is not much we as midwives can do about a long latent phase, if any relief of any significance is given too early there would be more cesarean sections happening. that is why we suggest women to have a warm bath, go for a walk have some paracetamol.
I have three children so know about labour from experience as well as being a midwife.

I completely agree with you about long latent phases. As an antenatal teacher, reflexologist specialising in maternity (although I have yet to do part 2 of Suzanne's course - coming soon) doula, baby massage teacher and almost midwife (I got a place and then had to give it up because I had to have major kidney surgery which put me out of action for the whole of the first term, plus a bit) I see lots of women through their pregnancies and labours (although nowhere near as many as you obviously) and hear many birth stories, and my experience of our local unit seems to be fairly typical. I won't bore you with the whole story. We'd be here all night.

But I will say a couple of things. Firstly, as long as women are treated like numbers who are expected to fit in to the hospital timetable, the section rate will continue to increase. My local unit has a rate of 30%. They do automatic sections for multiples and mal-positions and presentatiions (if you don't want a section you have to have the money to employ an independent midwife), refuse at least 50% of VBAC rquests and say that their high rate is due to the high transient refugee population. And yet a demographic survey revealed that the refugee women have a far lower section rate than the rest of the community. Oh yes, and failure to progress.

The other thing I wanted to say was that my husband will never be forgiven as long as he lives for insisting that we had our first baby in hospital. He did, however, redeem himself by insisting that our second son was born at home if at all possible. The whole hospital experience was deeply traumatic for both of us.

So I joined the MSLC where I have been told that what I experienced doesn't happen nowadays. However, this rather flies in the face of the evidence: the large number of complaints - around 30 a month which is 8% of all the births there - about the sub-standard care provided by the unit and the experiences of the women I see through the hospital, especially since the previous maternity services manager, a great advocate of minimal-intervention maternity care retired because, two weeks after she left, they closed the low risk unit.

I know for an absolute fact that there are women all over the coutry who have good, positive experiences of hospital birth every day. You just don't see to find many of them here.

The biggest baby have deliverd was 11lbs a big boy.
We are having a midwifery led unit built alongside our delivery suite at the moment it wil be great when it is finished.
I am always suprised ( though Should not be) that the vast majority of women who come in in labour want an epidural as soon as they get in the hospital doors. I personally hate epidurals they slow labour down and then women end up with so much intervention. They do have a place in complicated labours but defiatly not normal labours. I feel the antenatal teaching these women get is not very good. I feel I am quite good at keeping women going without an epidural even though in there birth plan it is what they want. with the right support and encouragement any woman can cope with labour.
I use reflexology in my practice when approriate.

I had my first child in a small maternity unit with only eight beds it was lovely, my second I had at home though ran into a few problems when he was the wrong way round and got stuck, they were about to send for the flynig squad when the GP managed to push him back a little an turn him round.
(the flying squad use to be a team of doctors and midwives that used to go to home deliveries that had problems) that was a long time ago, he is now 35yrs old, because of the trouble I had with him, I had my third in Hospital. I was not a midwife then.

My little nephew was 2lb 2oz when he was born 11 weeks prem. He would fit in the palms of my hands when I put them next to each other. He had some problems with a hernia and developed glue ear, which set him back a little on his hearing and speech, but now he is a healthy, happy 6 year old and the light of my life! (and his mum and dad's of course). My sister was in the ward for 40 hours before the doctor even saw her and when he eventually did come to check her out (after she had fainted and lost blood) she was ready to go!
He's a lanky fella now almost chest height on me ( I am 5'8") and a proper little romper stomper, very loving and kind, he rang me the other night before he went to bed because he wanted to know how my baby was doing! I asked him if he was looking forward to having a little cousin and he said "yes, it can have my Noddy books cos I am too old now" - Bless!:)

My first Sarah was 9lb 2oz six hour labour , Second birth was easier David was 8lb 4 i think, can't remember now lol , he only took 4 hours.

I can't recall how heavy my daughter was... around 6lbs 11oz I think... a wee prune-face who ended up on bottled milk because I never got much help with breast feeding... Birth was 'fun'... first pains at 1pm... birth at 1am... Main things I remember were trying the tens machine which was useless, grabbing hubby's hand and refusing to let go so he was bursting for the loo by the time it was all over 🙂 and my first real scream since the midwife didn't believe in cutting... [:o] Oh, and although I was first on the delivery suite, I was last in the ward and couldn't sleep for three days... you should see the photos!

Love her to bits but one was enough...;)

my daughter was 9 lb 4 oz, 9 days late, born 9th feb,at 9 mins past 12, some would say the upside down devil child, i would say my beautiful darling angel:D:D:D, although shes nearly 12 an them hormones are raging, my son 7 lb 9 oz 3 weeks early 23 dec 11pm he didnt want to miss christmas, and is as lively as electric, thats me done now, iv done my bit for the population. ps children should be seen and be heard;)

my first was my son now 16 years old, he was 7lb 13oz in labour for 4 hours (2 weeks late)
second was my daughter now 12 years old, she was 7lb 3oz in labour for 6 hours (3 hours late)
can't fault the aftercare, especially with my son, i was having a touch of the baby blues and the nurses were brilliant with me and him.
