I realise I should be asking my mid-wife but its Sunday! I have been aware of strong braxtons all through my pregnancy but last night they progressed into contractions ( I feel - second time mum), the problem is that it is all in my back (backache labour) and after a few hours its all stopped. I wondered if anyone could advise me if braxtons can be in the back or are they just tightenings? Its difficult to know what to do for best in the middle of night with a 4 year old in bed etc, etc. I felt contractions due to wave of nausea with each one also. I'm 32 weeks pregnant. thanks sam x

RE: early labour?!?

Hi Sam

Just like contractions, Braxton Hicks can be felt anywhere, and I remember them being really strong with my second from about the same stage you're at. They are practice contractions, but that doesn't mean you feel them in the bump. They could be in your back, thighs, legs, some people don't feel them at all.

I know it's Sunday, but that doesn't mean you can't go to the maternity unit to get yourself monitored. It will certainly set your mind at rest.

Big hugs.

Hi
You feel braxton hicks much stronger in 2nd pregnacies....and a midwife told me that they are actually doing something & your making a bit of slow progress, with my 3rd bady I went in to hospital (much to midwives annoyance) twice thinking labour had started but it hadn't....don't consider anyone else or the fact that it's Sunday...this is your pregnancey & no one can tell you what to do & if your getting worried get in touch with the maternity ward...sometimes midwives can be a little abrubpt...probably because their so over worked & short staffed...don't let that bother you.....It's you who's the important one now...[sm=hug.gif]

Take care

Hi
If you think you are having proper contractions it is very important that at 32 weeks you contact your midwife or delivery suite, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Braton hick contraction differ from true contractions in that they only usually last a few hours they do not get any stronger or closer together during the time they last.
if your contractions are getting stronger and closer together an lasting longer I suggest you, contact your midwife.

Hello
Went to the delivery suite when things started again just to be sure. Thought I'd let u know what was up in case anyone else ever reads this, in the same position!!!!

I have got a urine infection which has made my uterus very, very sensitive apparently and because I am so intune with my body and have felt braxtons from day one pretty much this is all being heightened and painful as Yasmin is so active inside me too, so Amoxycilin here I come!!!

So thankfully worries are over - mind you sitting in that delivery room really brings it all back!! Its not the birth Im worried about its the aftermath as I call it - being stitched, the first bath, first wee! Dont put that in the books - lol.
Best wishes Sam x

Hi Sam
Just remeber to listen to the Midwife as the head is being delivered, and pant don,t push if the head comes out nice and slowly there is less risk of you tearing and needing stiches.
I don,t know where you are but where I work we stitch as little as possible as long as it is not bleeding or gaping, or too big a tear, we leave it to heal itself.
best of luck
Glynis
