Hi
When I saw my doctora couple ofweeks ago, she mentioned that as being pregnant isn't an illness, I wouldn't need to see her again and then listed which hospitals I could use.
I replied that as being pregnant wasn't an illness why would I need to use a hospital.
My doctor looked at me as if I was crazy and continued listing my hospital choices.

I spoke with my midwife this week and she mentioned the Brent Birth Centre and that there are no doctors as it is run by midwifes and it is all natural no pain killers or anything on offer. So I was wondering if anyone has been there or knows someone who has.

Thanks
Allison

Hi Allison

Do you mean the Edgware Birth Centre?

I've been there and its gorgeous. Like a 5* hotel.

One thing to bear in mind is that the midwives still have work within certain boundaries such as you can't go there if you are over a certain age, less than 38 weeks or over 42 weeks pregnant and others.

If you hire an independent midwife, she assesses you as an individual and as long as you and baby are healthy, you can give birth at home.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tamara
Thanks for your reply
No, the Brent Birth Centre is a separate building in the grounds of the Central Middlesex Hospital.

Theyhave a policy similar to Edgeware you have to be aged between 16 - 42 with a healthy pregnancy.

I going to view it next week, but it looksnice in the photos. They have 6 rooms that have double beds in them. None of these horrible hospital beds!

Sounds wonderful. Remember that where you give birth is totally up to you. I'm considering a home birth if I have any more as they are really safe and a lot of women feel more relaxed at home. A birthing pool would help too I think.

RE: Brent Birth Centre

Well, I went and had a look round the birth centre with my partner, and we both really liked it.
There are no doctors as it is run by midwifes, so no medical intervention, they only offer gas for pain relief. It was like a private clinic, with 6 double bedrooms with private shower room. 2 of the rooms had birthing pools in them.
The midwife who showed us round was really nice and answered all our questions. The place was only nice and bright, lots of sunlight.
Think I will definitely go there.

RE: Brent Birth Centre

Hi Alison

Im due in December with my first baba! and am still deciding which Birthing centre to go to either Edgware or Central Middlesex. My only concern is that there aren't any doctors on the premises so if there are any complications this could be a bit of a problem.

Are you booked into Central Middlesex? I've seen the pics and it looks wonderful!

Your advise is greatly appreciated

Regards

Amba

RE: Brent Birth Centre

Hi Amba
Congratulations, so we're both having our 1st babies in December!
When I went and had a look around, they were very explicit on that they would only book you in once they had looked at your yellow book and checked your medical health/history.
If your having a healthy pregnancy, then no problem. They did explain that if you did get into difficulties, that you would be transferred to the main hospital where there is medical intervention.
I haven't booked in yet, but will do in the next couple of weeks. I've having problem trying to get an ultrasound scan at the moment at the Central Middlesex.
Best wishes
Allison

Did you managed to have a look around the centre?

RE: Brent Birth Centre

Hi Allison

So pleased for you... you must be so excited!

I went to Brent Birthing centre and they weren't very helpful! I rang the buzzer on the door but they refused to let me in to discuss arranging an appointment and told me phone in! Explaining that appointments are only during the day.

So I went to Edgware Birthing Centre and they were sooooooooooooooo nice. She asked me general questions and said I can come on Tuesday evening with my partner to have a look around... they do evening appointments knowing that you and your partner work so it might be difficult to get time off work....

The other reason Im saying no to Central Middlesex is that if there any problems you end up in Northwick Park (Im presuming here) which Im not keen on, where as at Edgware if there are any complications you go to Barnet Hospital which is relitively new.

Let me know how your scan goes... and also what you think about the whole experience, I might change my mind about Edgware after Tuesday! Whens your due date?

Take care

Usha

RE: Brent Birth Centre

Hi Usha
Had my scan and they re-dated me...now due 6th December. Had the scan in the new building at Central Middlesex, cost of a photo was £3.50. The doctor was rude, he asked if I'd had a scan before and I said no, but he didn't go on to explain what he was going to do [sm=confused-smiley-012.gif]. He then did the scan and said his colleague would come in and take the measurements, she was very nice. She explained what she was doing and pointed out things on the monitor for us. We saw the baby's legs and arms and the heart beating. My partner got very emotional...
Next scan I will be about 21 weeks.
Have you got a scan date yet?
