Hi guys

This is a little long winded - apologies! However I am hoping upon hoping for an informed reply if possible, so I wanted to provide clear information, if that makes sense?!.

Bit of a sensitive isuue here, well for me at least, as it concerns a loved one. My teenage daughter is six months pregnant and has developed external genital warts from the 2nd month of pregnancy which are I think around the labia, but as she won't let me look I cannot confirm with certainty that this is the only area of infection. She also has only told me now at 28 weeks that she has them, as understandably she was embarrassed to do so. I have read on some reputable web sites that this may contribute to the possibility that her baby may have to be delivered by caeseraen section, and the reasons why. As I only met her midwife recently for the first time, I informed her that my daughter had had a diagnosis of genital warts from the GU clinic and the implications that they too stated that my daughter may not be able to have a normal deliveryand had also been too embarrassed to divulge this information to her. The midwife who surprisingly and unfortunately does not possess the most compassionate of natures said that she didn't know of any reason that genital warts should prevent a normal delivery from taking place? Had it not been for her unfortunate stern mannerisms I could have possibly thought that she may have been trying to prevent my daughter from any worry! To make matters worse my daughters warts have begun to bleed, causing her some concern. at present she is loathe to go to the Doctor or indeed to the GU unit. I am still trying to persuade her to do so, but in the meantime she is googling madly on the PC, and I am concerned about what horror stories she may be reading, causing more worry. I know the best she can do, and will have to do is to seek medical advice. If anyone has any good information on what the implications are of bleeding warts, this is genuinely concerning me! Also info on what the implications are for a normal delivery, is it likely she will need a c section due to the prevelance of bleeding from them? My daughter's midwife said she had delivered a few babies where the mother had warts, in fact she actually stated that one mother was smothered in them - in a disgusted fashion of course! Sorry for the rant, just sad for my daughter that this midwife is not dealing with a young mum in a sensitive fashion. I have reassured my daughter that most midwifes are generally lovely, and not to take it personally, particularly as she is exceedingly paranoid that people are judging her, which has happened the more she has begun to grow. I am not looking for the complications to the baby of a normal delivery, or why the expectant mother may not be able to have a normal delivery. I have read about these areas, and understand the information.

I hope all the above makes sense?

Many thanks in advance

Hi sorry to hear about the situation but all I can say is book her in to see a female GP. With treatment hopefully they will be gone by the birth. Not sure what they prescribe, cream or antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Unless some others have further ideas. Good Luck x

Some of the creams cannot be used during pregnancy, due to transferance to the baby - also, if the warts are not confined to the labia, but are within the vagina, it could be very painful to have a vaginal birth - there is also the (very rare) chance of the baby becoming infected by the virus. She MUST be seen by an OB/GYN doctor - also, she should be able to request a different midwife, if the current one is so uncompassionate.

warts

If this is genital warts, and not herpes, there is no reason why your daughter cannot have a natural birth. I have also caught babies with mums having warts with no problem....

I would, however, speak to your local supervisor of midwives and voice your concerns of how the midwife treated your daughter.

Good luck
