Hi, I am currently experiencing a long cycle, I am on CD26. I know I havent ovulated as I use a monitor and have been charting temps, I also know that it is not imminent as I have had no CM. Last month I ovulated normally, however have recently came off the pill.

Has anybody used Agnus Castus with regard to fertility/conception/menstrual periods? If so, where do I get it, how do I take it, and any other advice would be much appreciated!

RE: Agnus Castus

hello Joanna,

My friend Nicole takes Agnus Castus. It helps enormously with PMT and mood swings, so she tells me. One can buy Agnus Castus in all good health food shops.

Love,
Patsy.

Hi there

I've also recently came off the pill, and like you my periods have been all over the place. So, I decided to start taking Agnus Castus, and so far so good. Not sure about controlling the mood swings though as I've been hell to live with this month!!!

I get the Agnus Castus from Holland and Barrett.

Good luck

RE: Agnus Castus

Hi there,

Annovulatory cycles are very common! I really wouldn't worry about just one, it happens to most women - have you read a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler? I would hertily recommend it if you haven't. It's also very common for your cycle to take a while to sort out after stopping the pill.

With regards to Agnus Castus (Vitex) - I have 3 Vitex babies! and I swear by the stuff. What it does is to shorten your follicular phase (the part of the cycle before ovulation) - so technically can work to shorten your cycle and promote ovulation. 2400mg of extract should sort you out but it often takes 3mths to take effect. Also, it's worth checking your luteal phase (second half of cycle) isn't a bit wonky (often is after the pill), it's worth taking Vitamin B6 (100mg) anyway as that ensures the luteal phase is long enough for the egg to implant (10days usually).

Holland and Barratt sell Agnus Castus at 400mg strength. Does this mean you have to take 6 caspules a day?

RE: Agnus Castus

Afraid so! I tend not to use H&B to be honest I find them very expensive. Lots of Online places sell them much cheaper if you have a google, although often they are 50% off at holland and barrett.

I take 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening. You could also try the tincture form (although it tastes *really* bad!) if you can't cope with the size and amount of the capsules!

I have suffered 3 miscarriages, all of which have been early on. I think this is due to hormone drops. Do you carry on taking agnus castus when you get pregnant and if so, how long for. Have tried natural progesterone cream and i got pregnant but still miscarried. Due to see doc today to investigate tests etc. Not sure if I want to go that route though.

RE: Agnus Castus

HI, no you (ideally) stop taking it after you have ovulated until the next cycle. If you don't know when you carry on but *must* stop if you become pregnant. Have you ever had "proper" progesterone suppositories? it's probably worth you seeing your GP as 3 miscarriages would be referred to be investigated.

Hi - I have a short luteal phase and have been using agnus castus with good results. Could i just ask how long to take the 100mg of vit B6 for? - Should i stop 10days after i have ovulated in case i am pregnant - ie is the amount too strong if i am pregnant?
Many thanks

RE: Agnus Castus / Vit B6

Hi Seeker, no B12 is fine to take throughout pregnancy (at least I don't know of any studies which show otherwise). In fact it is helpful in treating/preventing morning sickness and may also help decrease the chances of post partum haemorrhage. You should stop the Agnus Castus after ovulation though (only take from day one of your cycle until you ovulate then resume at the start of the next cycle if not pregnant) as it is emmangogue and could encourage a miscarriage.

RE: Agnus Castus / Vit B6

Thanks for your help - you do mean B6 though and not B12? There is a small amount of B6 in the multivitamin that i am taking so do you think 100mg is ok on top?
Many thanks

I have beenoff the pill for a year & a half ( i was onthe pill for 11 years) & since then have only had a period about every 6 months. I have been to the doctor who says its a waiting game & wont do anything.
I have bought 200mg of Agus Castus but i says to take 1 a day before breakfast, i'm also a little bit worriedabout when to stop them as i read in one of the reply's to when you have ovulated butwith my cycle being all over the place would i be ok to take them right through?

RE: Agnus Castus / Vit B6

hello sammyjaney, while agnus castus is safe to use in the medium term, ie up to about 3-4 months it whould not be the first herb i would have recommended. try dong quai, i think a very useful medicinal herb for you, and quite safe.

more info

To balance menstrual function, ensure a good intake of vitamins B, C and E, magnesium, zinc, iron, chromium and essential fatty acids. The herbs dong quai and black cohosh and various homeopathic remedies can help too.
To aid menopausal transition, you should have a diet high in phytoestrogens including soya products (such as tofu), chickpeas, lentils, alfalfa and seeds (sunflower, sesame and pumpkin).
Try the herbs agnus castus and black cohosh to ease and prevent symptoms such as flushes and night sweats. Homeopathic remedies such as sepia and sulphur can also help. Acupuncture, osteopathy, bodywork and movement therapies can be beneficial, as can relaxation, stress management, meditation and visualisation.
The Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, or winter cherry) is used for rejuvenating both male and female reproductive systems.

kind regards mike

RE: Agnus Castus / Vit B6

Hi,
I took Agnus Castus for quite a while as I suffered with very sore/tender breasts and painful periods. It did make a difference. However, I then got pregnant, even though I had had the contraceptive injection. I suppose Ican never be sure whether the contraception would have failed even had I not been taking Agnus Castus, but it would certainly be worth a try.

Dear HomeopathyStudent,
I am, too trying to get pregnant and trully believe in a homeopathic approach in medicene.
I have not had my periods for a few months and taking Vitex 400mgX2/day. I was just wondering if it is enough? Should I supplement it with Vitex tea or other herbs?
Thank you,

RE: Agnus Castus

Hi everyone

I have also used Agnus Castus and found it very useful.

I would also recommend using some flower essences - they can also be very balancing. Australian Bush Essence Woman Essence is great if you have come off the pill and your cycle is not regular. It contains (amongst others) Bush Fuchsia which resets the hypothalamus. Woman Essence is great for women of all ages.

If you are trying to get pregnant, then I recommend She Oak (also a Bush Essence) - this has an excellent success rate. You need to take 7 drops twice a day for 4 weeks, rest for 2 weeks and then repeat for as long as it takes. You can listen to Ian White(creator of Bush Essences)talking about She Oak by going to the archive of MySpiritRadio and looking for his interview under Author name. Downloads are free.

Good luck!

Hi All
I had two sessions for the contraceptive injection before hb and I decided we wanted to conceive. This was back in August last year. I spent the entire 6 months of the injection plus extra bleeding, this can cause a problem as the lining gets so thin that conception is impossible. Then I stopped bleeding all together - my lining had gotten too thin copmpletly!

This is what I did:

Eat pumpkin seeds as a snack
Drink a cup of Raspberry Tea and a glass of pomegranate juice in the morning
Drink a cup of pomegranate tea in the evening

My period came after a couple of weeks! Shortly after I had another scan and my lining was 100% as should be!!! I have now had three extremely regular months - I ovulate on the same day of my cyle and period comes on the same day of cycle!

This months, I ovulated as normal and my period is now 5 days late! I am going to do a test in a couple of weeks...who knows!!

I would definately try the above and most of all...relax about trying to get pregnant.
I was not relaxed at first (Within two months of deciding to try, 6 people I know got pregnant including my little sister!!!!!!!) I have been totally relaxed about it the past few months, just enjoy the practise! 😉
