hey everyone.
Im 17weeks and two days pregnant also suffer from ibs i have taken half an imodium today as my ibs was really bad and i was really suffering.. I took the same amount in my 1st trimester and everything was fine at the scan. Im really worrying something will go wrong now.. I dont know why as people take alsorts and some ppl even drink whist pregnant. How might imodium afect my baby if iv only in total taken one thru my whole pregancy? I used to take one everyday(before i was pregnant). What are chances in genral of having a miscarage in ur second trimester?all it said in my book is its a great deal later..

Thank u in advance

I really would not worry. I took immodium in my 2nd trimester as I had a bug which was not nice. Everything was ok. I know the leaflet said not to take. But I also was on antibiotics in my pregnancy too. They do harp on these days on the do's and don't, I know its for the safety of the baby and I'm not condoning it, but in my mom's time, they could effectively do what they wanted and I've turned out allright.

Perhaps the best thing is to seek the advice of a medical professional - GP, midwife or pharmacist? What is OK for one person may not be so for another.

I only took two, but I agree with Holistic, what is ok for one may not be for another... I've had my baby already she's 7 months now. You will feel all sorts, with your growing bump. Just try and enjoy your pregnancy... I know that is hard to say!

With all due respect, Saz, Immodium and liver are hardly the same thing! And surely, if you worry about these things, then the best thing would be not to take any medication at all unless it was ok'ed by the doctor. But don't forget also (and I don't want to frighten you here) that the medical profession in my mother's time merrily prescribed thalidomide to pregnant women and look what that led to! 😡

Anyway, I'm sure all will be well and hope that you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

I'm 27 weeks pregnant with RAMPANT colitis at the moment. I have taken imodium a couple of times because I wouldn't be able to leave the house otherwise. I'm trying to be good with nutrition etc., but it seems the pregnancy has made things bad. Some people are lucky enough to go into remission when they get pregnant, which was what I was hoping for. The problem is, for obvious reasons, they don't test drugs on pregnant women, but I did find a study somewhere where they'd tested loperamide on pregnant rats and found that it didn't pass through the umbilical cord.

You have to balance the risk. For me, I've been hospitalised 3 times with colitis, I have to balance the danger of colitis with the danger of imodium and I personally feel instinctively 'safe' taking it on very rare occasions. I think you'd incur more risk if you were taking it regularly.

You might want to try alternatives such a kaolin mixture, which I have read is safe during pregnancy - but obviously not the kaolin and morphine. Personally I found it ineffective, but to be honest, even the imodium makes low impact on my current symptoms.

I find that stress makes my symptoms worse, it's a cliche, but true. So get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of water and try to stay calm. Veggie juicing helps, but avoid too much fruit.

Whenever I go to the clinic - they are keeping 'an eye' on me because of the colitis - I've said each time my symptoms are pretty bad, they don't offer any advice at all.

It's a toughie, but follow your instincts.

Oh and just to add, I didn't feel any movement until about 18 weeks, and even then I couldn't be sure if it was the baby or bubbles caused by the colitis!! I didn't feel the sensation everyday, so I wouldn't worry about that. I think you'll be fine. As Sunanda says, don't take the medicine if you're worried about it.

My mom (who is a nurse) and some my friends (one of them already gone trough all this trobles) told me that it's rather good than a bad idea to take Imodium or Loperamide if needed. In some cases, it's even preferable and I never heard about any of it causing any problems. So there's no need to worry until your doctor hadn't said contrary.
