Hi,

My dad had a blood test done on Monday, and the results showed he has kidney 'abnormalities'. The doctor didn't explained what this could be due to, but has referred him to the renal unit at the hospital. He has an appointment this coming Tuesday, to get x-rays done.

I was just wondering if anyone have any idea what the potential 'abnormalities' could be, and what they are looking for on the x-rays? I know it is a case of waiting to see what happens, but I want just what to know what it could possibly be.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Healthypages,

It is of course best if you were to ask the doctor, however it could be something simple like a kidney stone. These aren't normally dangerous but can hurt like hell (I know from experience!), though they may not show up at first on an x-ray depending on how small they are. I started with an x-ray, then had an ultrasound and then had the scan thingy where they inject a special dye and put you through a doughnut (can't remember the name of it, but someone on here will I'm sure, I think it's something like a CT scan).

Of course there could be other causes, though most things are treatable, or in the case of kidney stones can work their own way out.

I'm sure he'll be fine. Will send Reiki you all.

Thank you very much 🙂

We did think Kidney stones, but we weren't sure if they would should up in a blood test and he hasn't had any pain at all...

He did ask the doctor what the abnormalities could be, but he just said that he wasn't too sure. My dad doesn't know if that it just coz he doesn't want to say until it is confirmed. The doctor said he was going to send a letter to the hospital but then spoke to a more senior doctor, who told him to make it an urgent appointment 🙁

My OH keeps telling me to stop worrying, and that it is most likely nothing serious but it is hard... He is my dad, so naturally worry about him...

A kidney stone won't particularly show up in a blood test, but there can be evidence in a urine test, if it contains traces of blood, which is likely if the kidney stone has disloged from the kidney and is scratching the insides of the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder (as it's narrow and the kidney stones can be gritty and sharp).

I'm sure the doctors will figure it out. 🙂
