Hi all 😉
I am fairly new to these boards. Browsing through I see that there is a 'head/brain etc' board.
I would like to briefly explain my experiences of Acromegaly, one of many disorders that can manifest itself due to a misfunction or tumour (99.9%benign) of the pituitary gland.
The pituitary is a major major gland in the head/brain area. It is called 'The Master Gland'. It regulates the endocrine/hormonal system, temperature control, and many many other things that your body (you/me) take for granted.
My story began with a sore throat. GP checked it out and I went for a thyroid scan. Turns out I have an over active thyroid. I had necessary treatment (Radioactive Iodine) and went for a check up at the Hospital. This first visit to my endocrinologist was rather confusing. He walked into the room, took one look at me and said "I know whats wrong with you". Er, I am sure I knew too. That is why I was there - my thryroid??
He asks me peculiar questions about my hands and feet. Did I perspire alot, how did I feel in 'general' etc. Rather perplexed I answered and he then told me about the pituitarly gland. I had/have Acromegaly. The pituitary secretes far too much growth hormone, therefore the body/fatty tissues and bones continue to grow.
It was a relief in many ways. I now know why I have big feet, hands and a rather big hooter. I just thought I was unlucky.
I have since had a tumour removed from my pituitary gland. This has given me new life, completely. My headaches have gone, I don't snore so much, my sleep apnea happens rarely and I can wear shoes that I never dreamt of. Much more than this, my whole 'feeling' of well being is back. I used to wonder what it would be like not to hurt. My hands hurt, my joints ached, I felt 'sick' and under the weather a lot of the time.
I have a new lease of life. I still get groggy days but at least I get good days too.
I wanted to let you know about the information that can be found. SO many people may have a pituitary problem. It is fairly rare at the moment but that is only because so many people, medical and alternative therapists don't know much about the brain and the pituitary.
This isn't an ad. I promise. I have read some of your posts and I felt the need to tell you my story.
There is a wonderful website I go to for advice, information and support on any brain/pituitary disorder. (There are soooo many). Its called The Pituitary Foundation. Anyone is welcome to visit and have a browse. It has been a godsend to me and I owe them so much for keeping me sane and well informed. It's not all medical blah blah either. Its a wonderful place that has helped so many people.
Just thought you might like to have a look.
Pituitary Gland
Hi
Wow! What a lovely story.
Thank you for sharing. I have been working on a lady tonight - she is having difficulty conceiving and I always get concerned touching the pituitary gland! It is so close to the other glands too and sometimes never know if I am in the right place!
It is nice to know there are happy endings to illnesses and so glad you have now found some relief to your symptoms and lead an easier happier life.
Good for you - be proud of yourself for having so much courage and fighting to find a happier life. It is difficult when illnesses occur and docs just do not know where to begin. Hopefully this will now encourage more people to come forward to seek medical help.
Lovely to hear your story and a positive one too.
Best wishes to you and heres to a healthy life for you now.
Kind regards
