Does anyone know anything about optical migraines together with any info on treating them. I have 2 calcifying disks in my neck causing considerable pain and migraines etc. However, this seems to have progressed to a migraine without pain. My vision have almost a continual blurr around the edges (have been to Optician who confirms my eyes are OK), occasional disorientation, feeling of nausea , and I drive home from work in a perpetual fog.
Can anyone help?

RE: Optical migraine

HI
I have suffered these types of migraines since I was 14 years old. I am now 35 and am a holistic therapist. I am still at college completing an advance course and find that reflexology and massage help with circulation and prevents me from having the migraines. I get the odd one now and then but I used to get them every fortnight or more.

Good luck

RE: Optical migraine

I was at a local'out of hours' hospitaltwo weeks ago (on a Saturday) as my vision had become really odd. My own GP thought I may have a detached retina, but the duty opthalwotsit (eye man!) said that the retina was fine, and it was probably caused by the migraine that was still evident (day 3). I had been very sick for about 16 hours, and the effort of vomitting had increased my blood pressure - I also had an array of tiny little thread veins on my cheeks - induced by effort.
Since then I have seen an acupuncturist. It worked for me 3 years ago, and it appears to be doing its stuff again this time - no head pain for 8 days now.

RE: Optical migraine

Hi
I experienced similar vision problems which lasted approx 20 minutes intermittently and my GP eventually sent me for an MRI brain Scan which showed nothing irregular
Adopting an elimination programme of my diet over a period of a few weeks I discovered that removing all MSG cured me

I was in my twenties when I had my first optical migraine (scotoma with jagged edges). However, it has been since I turned 40 (I am now 47) that I seemed to be plagued with ocular phenomena of various descriptions (slits of light, circles of colour, yellow blotches, dimness, slanting lines of text, some lines of text blurred, etc.). Three years ago, I noticed a patch of redness to the right of my left eye. I had the eye checked immediately, but nothing could be found. I still have an anomaly in this part of the left eye (sometimes a circle of red, sometimes a red shadow). This has been diagnosed as some kind of optical migraine phenomena. Has anyone ever come across anything like this?

Optical Migraine symptoms

Symptoms of headaches related to the eyes are as follows: burning eyes, fatigue, migraine, sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia), nausea and vomiting, visual aura (certain visuals when a person is under visual migraine), throbbing pain, and headaches that begin after extensive use of the eyes, which usually happens after reading, using the computer, or watching television. Visual migraine is usually caused by stress and prolonged periods of exposure to bright lights. Using the eyes in a stressful manner or in any stressful activity may result in such condition. The use of eyeglasses can sometimes strain the person's eyes and may give headaches. Sometimes, headaches are felt if the person experiences sinus conditions, allergies, tumors, hypertension or hormonal changes, not really related to one's eyesight.
