My brother recently E-mailed me a document about the use of Geranium oil (specifically Pelargonium species) for the treatment of "Postherpetic Neuralgia" (i.e. the pain associated with the aftermath of Shingles (which my mother has had an attack of recently), which is technically called Herpes zoster (see ). Apparently in the USA and Canada, there is a PATENTED medicine called "Neutragen", which is mainly "Geranium" oil (though the actual species are "Pelargonium"). (For further details, Google "Neuragen"). However although this is available in the USA, etc, I can find no mention of it being on sale in the UK (though perhaps it is under a different brand name. I also asked at a local chemist, and 2 health food shops (1 of them Holland and Barrett) but none of these knew of its being in sale in the United Kingdom; one suggested I could buy it via the Internet from the USA. This is I think likely to be expensive and I am also concerned about the reliability of any Internet source of medicines (having read rather negative things about these).

Does anyone know of a source of Geranium Oil for the relief of postherpetic neuralgia in the United Kingdom (I live in Northern Ireland), or if not, can they suggest a reliable (and relatively inexpensive) source of such medicinal products over the Internet, etc? If anyone has any experience of the efficacy of this product (directly or indirectly) I would also be interested.

Hi Carne,

If you contact a local aromatherapist that is either affiliated to the IFPA or the IFA, I am sure they will prepare a blend for your mother for her shingles - the relevant links are:-

I hope this helps.

Hiya

My spiritual healing mentor has a wonderful blend for post-herpetic neuralgia. If you go on the Healers2006 website you can contact her.

I contacted (whose website advertises Geranium Oil at [DLMURL="http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?PID=481&afid=70&safid=Google&scid=4897"] http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp? PID=481&afid=70&safid=Google&scid=4897[/DLMURL] ) and received this reply:

Thank you for your message

We stock product no 60121Geranium Oil.

However, this oil is not specifically for pain relieve in the product Neuragen it is blended with other oils to work together rather than for an individual action.

Geranium can be used as an aid to help inflammation, antiseptic or anti depressant under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist.

Unfortunately we do not stock Natragen

I had also called yesterday at my local Holland and Barrett store; the lady in charge had not heard of Geranium Oil but recommended Lysine and Vitamin C. After I got the E-mail from H & B I called again this morning; this time the same lady showed me Geranium Oil on the shelves, but pointed out that unlike Neuragen this is concentrated and not to be applied directly (it can either be mixed with another oil, or used in a bath).

I decided to leave things as they are, as my mother appears to be getting less pain day by day.
