Hi
My dad has recently found out he has MND (it is affecting his lower legs)and i don't know anything about it... can anyone tell me how we can help him with this?
What should we expect? he is in his early 70's so i am told age is actually on his side on this one! They are coming to install all the handrails etc in the house shortly.
Thanks
LynnMac

RE: MND

Hiya Lynn

I have personal experience of MND, I lost my very wonderful Grandmother to it a few years ago and all too young. However saying that...

there are several different types of MND and it sounds from what you say (lower legs) that your Dad has the one that gives you the longest prognosis (sorry if that sounds strange). My Nan had the worst one so was only with us for around 3 years...

there are some very good sites around, and also they run very good support groups (not that we ever got to any, as my Nan did not want to see other people suffering...)and that is the only thing I would say, when you go to a group expect to meet some very healthy people and equally some people that have travelled and lived with MND for a while, however the support can be invaluable.

The one thing to bear in mind mind with MND is that it tends to go in drops and plateaus, so everything will just tick along for a while and then there will be a drop, this is normally noticed by the inability or hardened ability to do something that you could do before, there is no rhyme nor reason to this, the drops can happen very quickly and seem to be very harsh but then you hit the plateau which seems to give you some breathing space and time to adjust...

quality of life and independence are very important to us and this should be borne in mind with your Dad and future planning.

If you think I may be able to offer you any advice or help and support please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hugs
Tracy

RE: MND

Thank you Tracey
I am sorry for your loss.
It helps to know what to expect esp. from someone who knows. I have some books from the library but needed a push to delve into them.
Thanks again
