Hello all,

My mother in law has epilespy, she's 50 and she is having a real hard time of it at the moment. The doctors have recently changed her tablets (long story) and she is having seizures a lot. Her epilespy they think was caused by an accident, but it didn't surface until she had children. When she has seizures she becomes abusive and violent. It is becoming increasingly dangerous for her as she is having them so often (in th bath/while cooking) and she has had quite a few accidents.

I was wondering if there was anyone who has had success with alternative therapies for epilespy, such as naturopathy or massage or Reiki - She asked me to look into it as her doctors aren't very forthcoming at the moment, they are taking their time in finding the right sort of tablets for her.

Thank you for your reply selenite, things are looking a bit better for her with money and support but no joy as yet to helping her heal.

RE: Epilespy and alternative therapies

Hi Siggy,

When I was 11/12, I had a bad fall on the bak of my head and was stunned for a few minutes. In those days (very early 50's) there was no brain damage check up and anyway all seemed OK. At 21, I had my first Grand Mal, black out, but the GP said it was 'probably just one of those growing up things!!!!!' and no treatment was given.

All was OK until I was 35 when I had 3 blackouts with warning auras in succession. I was diagnosed as having mild epilepsy and prescribed Phenobarbitone, the only medication known in those days.

I am still on it 30 years later, as the doctors say that, although there are much more efficient medications available nowadays:

a. Epilepsy tends to die down by itself as you get older and

b. Testing me on alternative frugs would be dangerous, as I could have a fit when one doesn't work, and that would mean me losing my driving licence..

So you see, it is a very complicated procedure to find the right drug for epilepsy, and I have been repeatedly told by doctors that epilepsy covers a huge range of illnesses, all of which have to treated on a 'suck it and see' basis.

As usual with medical questions on this forum,, the first point of enquiry should be your professional medical practitioner and you should not rely on any advice you receive here.

I hope your Mother gets better or receives the correct treatment

Hi Siggy,

Sorry to hear about your mother in law.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs might help. She needs to find a qulified practionner and discuss it with them. As with many things, opinions may differ, so some "shopping arround" might be necessary. Of course this would be alongside continuing seeing her GP.

Yes Leonardo - that is precisely why she lost her licence because they changed her medication. She has had to give up her business and everything - she needed to drive for her business and now her husband has to look after her and he's having a hard time too. I just don't understand why they change her tablets in the first place. She has lost so much weight and her hair has suddenly gone straight. My hubby didn't recognise her.

I will let her know about the acupunture and chinese herbs, I think she just needs something to slow down the seizures at this time, obviously it would have to be along side her doctor, although she has had so many different doctors I don't think she knows who to turn to. I will look into the chinese medicine and see if I can find anyone in her area.

Thank you for your help,
L&L,
Sig
