Hi well its my ex mother in law. She has come over form South Africa and we went to visit yesterday.
The stroke has affected her left side, she is able to walk a little, with a stick outside, her balance isn't great and she has lost control over her left arm.
I am doing some research and finding some gadgets to help her get dress etc..
All her doctor said was put it in a sling and forget about it, it will never work again, isn't that awful.
She has been given one exercise to do which is with elbow bent, to turn forearm and palm into supination and a prone position.
I thought i can help with some manipulation and massage and then remebered she is diabetic, so any ideas what i can suggest to her. Is it ok for me to do some soft tissue work and move her joints through their range. She also said that the weight of her arm is pulling down and causing alot of discomfort in her shoulder and neck region as you can imagine.
I really want to help her and send her home with some ideas to make it easier.
Please help, thanks Shane

There may be at least support (and ultimately improvement) by massaging points on fingers joints by a something like pencil, for stroke safely and surely, for diabetes with certain care considering it's a general issue involving many body systems.
Applying plant seeds onto points is harmless for this also, so one can do massage right by them.
If interested, I can send schemes.
Sorry to hear about your mother in law.
But you dont mention how long ago she had the stroke?
Now my mother in law had one back in the summer. Her whole right side of her body was affected, but slowly week by week she improved. The last place she had problems was her right arm.
When sitting she propped up her side with a couple of pillows, wearing a sling when out and about, helped with the shoulder pain.
Once the pain had passed from her nerve endings re-awakening, she has been left with a weakness, but months later there has been more improvement. She has taken up knitting again for exercise. It was very slow at first, but now she is clicking away.
We had help from Age Concern who supported her at home for 6 weeks and she attends a stroke clinic, where a lot of advice and support has been given.
Take care of her
Regards
