I am currently on 75 MG of Thyroxine which is very shortly going to increased to 100 MG. Im trying to loose weight. I have tried dieting, eating healthy and even resorted to starving myself somedays. I want to loose weight the healthy way.
Any tips???
I've been on thyroxine since I was 7. I'm currently on 225mg a day.
Until I was about 26 I never had a problem with my weight, except when I weighed too little. Then all of a sudden I put on loads of weight. I went up to over 13st. I'm now back down to about 10 and a half stone. Part of that is due to other medication that I've been put on for something completely different, but around a stone of it was before I was on the other medication.
Unfortunately, I think the only way to lose weight is to eat sensibley and EXERCISE!!!! If you're not in to exercise try just going for a 20 minute walk every day. It's a start and will start to increase your fitness level. You'll probably find that you want to do more and the weight will start to come off. Just don't give up.
Good luck. 🙂
You may find that you don't lose as quickly as most other people, but it will come off.

Hi Lilmisscute!
Hi Lilmisscute,
It's Vathani again..
Becareful when you go doing things like starving to loose weight whilst on Thyroxine (T4) medication with Hypothyroid conditions..as it could prove quite harmful..
If your doctor is prescribing you thyroxin, enough to re-balance your hypothyroidism, with tiredness, constipation, dry skin, hair loss , being prone to being cold..along side other consitions..he/she is should be very careful not to drastically UP your dose..as this could be fatal at times with palpitation, sever sweating, angina like symptoms and so on..
Besides you are quite young for them to increase the dose from 75mg..likelihood is that you may be on it for a while..before they are happy that they have monitored you enough to increase it slightly..
Nefra is right, the sensible way to loose weight is to balance what you eat with exercise...avoid going through the ALL or NOTHING thinking ways ..which you also agreed in your last mail to me..
whatever activity you select..select it for life..that means they have to be part of your every day healthy mind , healthy body attitute...but also be fun to keep trying 🙂
Here are some food you can learn to include in your everyday menu planing with rich source of Iodine needed to make Thyroxine by your own body:
seaweeds, citrus fruits, berries, peppers, green leafy vegs, wholegrains, red meat, milk, eggs, beef, cereal ..
Yup more or less most nutriously rich food has Iodine in it..which your body needs..
Take good care !
with warm wishes
Vathani xx
Further to Awakening Dawns' note. If you eat meat and diary, ensure it is of the highest quality - in other words organic. As we all know, animals bred for meat in less than ideal conditions are pumped full of growth hormones, antibioics and a whole host of other chemicals and hormones. This may potentially play havoc with Thyroxine.
Also lightly steam cruciferous vegetables because they contain an enzyme which can interfere with the formation of thyroid hormone. Some of these include, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and bok choi.
There is no other way to manage your weight than what has already been said.
I am on 125mcg Thyroxine, and my weight has gone up and down over the years, I have now (after realising that I was eating nearly a loaf a day) cut out lots of bread (I love toast, and have limited myself to 2 in the morning for my brekkie) and crisps 🙁 lol, I have lost 15lb since before xmas and that's using the new Weight Watcher plan as well. Good luck, it's not easy xx
I have hypothyroidism too and am on 175mg a day. I had put on some weight and was finding it difficult to lose but have just lost a stone since Jan 2nd. I followed my own mixture of the Gillian McKeith diet of abundance and the Carol Vorderman 28 de-tox plan. I have been good and stuck to it and am carrying on with it until I`ve lost another half-stone..... I hopefully won`t put it back on again as I`ve changed my eating habits and have a routine now....
(mind you I could devour a pizza;) but I will resist....)
a stone is brilliant...i'm going to have to get the vorderman book!
Under-active thyroid
Hi. I've had an under-active thyroid for about three years now. Health issues for me are weight gain, feeling the cold and tiredness. I'm currently taking 75 microgrammes of Thyroxine.
I love food and exercise very little:-(.
My husband and I have followed Weight Watchers in the past and it's worked. I'm currently just under 12 stone and would like to be about 9½ stone (I'm 5ft 4ins). It's my goal to reach this weight before I'm 40.
Totally support all fellow under active thryoid people. I have struggled with my weight for years and always have to work harder at it than other people on the same programmes! The only advice I would have is to get your levels checked frequently as they DO fluctuate, sometimes in response to expected endocrine upheaval like pregnancy but sometimes (it seems to me) for no reason whatsoever. It is important to be on the exact correct replacement dose, as too much thyroxine is very dangerous (my Mum was hypo for a while and nearly had permanent cardiac damage, now they have zapped her gland with radioiodine and she is on the same replacement dose as me!)

You may in general sedate the Dampness or tone up
the Wind energies on fingers joints, by marking some points
by a felt-tip pen.
Though this is rather mild action.
You need to figure out your BMR -- basal metabolic rate. Not to be confused with BMI, which is rubbish. It will tell you how many calories you are burning a day.
Then start logging your calories and foods using dailyplate.com, nutridiary.com, fitday.com or any other online calorie counting website. See what your average calories are now for the week, then subtract 500 per day. You will lose one pound of fat in a week. If you also exercise, you will lose more. NEVER go below 1200 calories if you are a woman.
However, I hate starving, so even though my BMR is 1212, if I want to lose weight, I keep my calories between 1500 and 1800. It's slower but I am less likely to binge. I exercise so I prefer burning off the calories.

Never heard of the BMR but it sounds interesting. I just got to know about BMI from a dieting website that just told me that obviously I am too heavy. Not that I didn't know that before. 😀
I am trying to lose weight and lead a more healthy life - I've started with changing my diet completely and doing lots of sports. I am just in the starting process so I have just lost 2 pounds yet but I hope that I will succeed with small steps!
Hi there
Without going into too much detail, there are a few things that can make quite a difference when dieting with hypothyroidism:
- If you skip meals, your body goes into 'starvation mode' 🙁 lowering your basal metabolic rate - so eat regular smaller meals.
- Use a smaller plate size 🙂
- Eat wholefoods (not processed) - wholegrains (bread, pasta, brown rice, etc); lean meats, low fat cheeses (eg cottage cheese) and bioyoghurts. This will stop you feeling hungry too soon.
- Avoid sugar - it makes you feel hungry about 2 hours later :dft005:- snack on nuts, seeds, fresh and dried fruit if necessary - but only in small quantities. Sugar can also cause all sorts of problems.
- Eat lots of vegetables (5 portions/day, 75-100gms being a portion) and 3 fruits, choosing a whole colour range to get a good selection of plant nutrients which come in the coloured parts. Have them raw as much as possible (salads, juiced, home made smoothies) but also in soups, lightly stir-fried, or steamed to preserve the nutrients :024:. Limit your intake of raw brassica plants (cabbage, broccoli, turnip, cauliflower, kale, radish, etc) as they can affect thyroid funtion.
- Eat some protein like eggs or cottage cheese at breakfast, as this will keep you fuller for longer and you won't feel the need to snack midmorning :003:. Always eat breakfast.
- Recently it has been found that thick soups stay in the stomach longer, so make home-made thick soup and take it to work in a thermos or similar - make sure you have some protein in or with it.
- Clear out your fridge and cupboards of all the foods you should not eat - give them away! - then you won't be so tempted to snack :dft012:.
- Enrol a friend  to change your eating philosophy with you and support each other with suitable food choices, collecting helpful recipes, etc.
- Exercise regularly - choose to walk further going to and from work, join a gym, go swimming, go for cycle rides, go dancing, go rock-climbing, walk the dog further :dogrun:, have fun!
- Try to be more active during the day - learn to run upstairs (avoid lifts and escalators), dance while cooking - work out fun ways of being active!
- Take a quality multivitamin/multimineral - one which has a full range of bio-available nutrients - as often one feels the need to eat when in fact the body is asking for nutrients which are deficient. PM me for suggestions.
- Drink a glass of filtered water before a meal - you'll feel less hungry. If you do feel hungry drink water. You'll need up to 2 litres daily which can be drunk also as teas or to dilute fresh fruit juices.
- Lastly, if you can put things ready for the evening meal either the night before or in the morning, then there is less likelhood that you will choose something processed or ready-prepared from the shops. So, learn to plan your meals - even for the whole week ahead - then you will find it much easier to keep to your new eating philosophy! 🙂
Wishing you the best of health 😀
Wondering how lilmisscute is ?
Excellent advice Caroline.

That's excelent Jojo! Well done - keep at it. Hope my suggestion spur you on! I lost three and a half stone, and have some more to go, but plateaued out. need to follow my own advice more closely, perhaps - especially where exercise is concerned!!
Your thyroxine levels may not change much once you are stabilised. Mine's been the same for a couple of years now (150mcg) in spite of the weight loss.
Thanks Caroline and well done to you too, I have been swimming since before Christmas, but too have plateau'd at the moment, put on stay the same. I clerk at Weight Watchers have done for 10 years, but it has been a struggle x
I have been on the same amount of thyroxine for as long as I can remember, struggled for the last 18 years, daughter is nearly 19, hmm sounds like a pattern emerging lol think I was undiagnosed til I moved to Essex !!
Hello sorry I took ages to reply, I havent been on here for a few months. Thankyou so much for all your kind words epecially to CarolineN I am going to follow your plan.....hopefully it helps.
I have been a bit stressed out since moving to Sheffield because it took me a bit of time to settle in but I am starting to find my feet now. The last week I have been having trouble with my self esstem and confidence but I have booked in to see a counsellsor. I am trying to eat healthier I have been eating rasins insteasd of crisps. However my trouble is that I eat to much carbs like bread, pasta etc.
I have just recetnly moved to Sheffield for university and it is very hilly so I have lost a teeny tiny bit of weight going up and down the hills and I have generally just been walking everywhere, I think I have got on a bus once so I am really proud of myself. I have also enrolled myself at the gym...... I havent actually been back since my induction 2 weeks ago but I have got some new trainers and im all set to do. I just need the motivation to go now.
Thankyou
P.S. Well done to everyone who has reached their goals or who are attempting to reach their goals
xxxx
Hi everyone,
I notice the recurring theme of plateau-ing in this thread.
If you plateau for any length of time it usually means that your weight is now right for your current food intake/activity level. Perhaps the food/drink intake needs tweaked a little?
We find that doing an exercise which you really enjoy (and honestly - not many people enjoy slogging at the gym week after week) encourages you to keep at it.
This will, over a period of time (months, not weeks), tone and firm. Please note: you won't lose weight with extra exercise, since muscle weighs more than fat.
I hope this is useful.
David:)

Hi Laura
First of all I'd ask what you are eating. Is it mostly pre-prepared (processed) and out of a box, or is it lots of fresh food you cook and make up yourself? Please have a look at this video - it is a stark reminder of the damage that processed food is doing to us, and although I know the problem in it is not specific to yours, I know eating processed foods has a similar impact through loss of nutrients.
There's a lot going on with you and I'd take a copy of what you have written here and give it to your GP and ask for your T3 levels to be tested. Like as not they will dismiss the idea but it is worth a try. It is possible you are not converting inactive T4 (thyroxine) to active T3 (triiodothyronine) - this can be due to lack of the co-factors needed to do this (a range of vitamins and minerals), or lack of the enzyme itself (deiodinase). There is an excellent book by Dr Durrant-Peatfield who explains what is going on with thyroid imbalance and how to help sort it out. It took me 2-3 readings of the book to understand it but it is based on genuine physiological understanding of your problem. If desperate it may be worth going to one of [DLMURL="http://www.tpa-uk.org.uk/peatfield_clinic_brochure.pdf"]his clinics[/DLMURL].
Another possibility is adrenal fatigue - this needs specialist care and a nutritional therapist is trained to help sort this out if it hasn't got too far down the line. It was the nutritional therapist and a doctor specialising in functional medicine that sorted me out. It doesn't happen in five minutes - you are looking at months to rebalance your system but be aware that this is perfectly possible - and Please get this sorted before it is too late and you end up with something like ME/CFS.
What I have said is by no means complete but gives you an idea of what could be happening. You are only young and with your whole life ahead of you, you need to be fit in order to enjoy it. It is certainly worth making the effort to get this sorted now, not just for you but for your family too.
Love Light and Healing to you.
hi caroline thanks for your response i have to admit i do eat some processed food but i do also eat food cooked from scratch and i eat a range of fruit and veg ( prob not as much as i should) i do enjoy chocolate aswell but i try and limit myself as i know that that can be a big factor in weight gain or weight loss. ive never heard of the t3 test is it done the same way as a normal thyroid test?
thanks again for your help

Hi Laura
Well, whose diet is perfect? ;), but you have an idea of what to aim for now. 🙂 Lots of Wholefoods (wholewheat, brown rice, 70%+ chocolate is allowed, at least 5 veg and fruit portions (portion =100gms) and preferably more - soups and home-made smoothies are excellent - with quality, low-fat protein. Do your best! - it's your health at stake.
Yes, the T3 test is done the same way. There are however many ways of measuring it and it is either total T3 (1.1 -2.6 nanomol/l) or free T3 (3-8 picomols/l) - (Durrant-Peatfield) - and you should not take your thyroxine until after the test has been done - that's probably why your tests have come back "normal", but there are other reasons like the cell receptors not taking up the thyroxine so more remains in the blood, and so on - nothing is simple where thyroid malfunction is concerned .
I wish you well in your quest to get sorted - do PM me if you need more help.
I managed to put on 5 stone before being diagnosed hypo I tried in vain many time to loose weight without success. 🙂 I started taking selenium three months ago and have finally lost 1stone 2lbs on the weight watchers diet.

I had my thyroid removed last year and am facing a similar problem. I'm currently on 150MG of Thyroxine and have been trying to loose weight for months. My typical day consists of bio yoghurt with seeds, tomato soup, then meat and vegetables. I exercise for 20-30 minutes a day and swim for an hour a week.
Despite how hard I try, I cannot seem to loose any weight and would like to drop a dress size due to both health and personal confidence.
Do you think this means I need my medication increased or am I missing something obvious? x
