Hi
I recently read in a book by Thomas Bartram that Prostate problems are virtually unheard of in countries where Pumpkin Seeds are a regular part of the diet. It's an old Indian remedy too I think (and they taste quite nice!).
Got to be worth a try!

Hi Alex,

Holland and Barret, any health food store, Sainsburys and other supermarkets too.

They do taste great, and nice mixed with linseed, and sunflower seeds, also good for all round health as contain 'good fats' and help to keep the colon clean.

Also, ladies, good for Breast Health and ovaries/hormonal balance.

We began eating them in quantity since Art's diagnosis, but to an extent I havealways eaten them aas snacks. You only need a handful per day.

You are what you eat!!!

Hello,
I just wanted to say that I started taking a small handful of Pumpkin seeds everyday at breakfast as I heard that they were very good for you. But now I know that they are good for preventing prostate problems I will keep taking them.... you learn something new every day.

Yummy! We put them in our breakfast cereal mix 😀
Also, don't forget to roast your own instead of tossing them out 🙂
Roasted in their skins and then peeled before eating of course 😀
Love and health,

RE: Pumpkin Seeds for Prostate Health?

Hi all,

on the advice of our revered Moderator Gillyan, I am taking Saw Palmetto, 1000mg Vit. C, Fish oil capsules and pumkin seed oil capsules,, all from H&B.. I was diagnosed very recently with a very small localised, treatable prostate tumour. How much all my H&B medication went to making it small I will never know, but I would like to think so!!!!!

In as much as the 'old' treatment was either to starve the tumour by castration,, or to undergo a very delicate operation to remove the prostate which had a 70% impotence result, I feel lucky to be on injections for 3 to 4 months and a spell of radiation to kill of any remaining cells.

How about a drop or two of Essiac for good measure?

Hi Petal,

I of course rushed to Google to look up 'Essiac', and found it to be a herbal tea mixture.... The trouble is that, as far as I can see, the original recipe, or mixture of herbs died with Caisse and all that reamins are poor imitations and the raw ingredients for DIY .

Hi Leonardo

That's not the case at all. 😀 The way that I found Neways was through Essiac - they used to do Cassie Tea capsules and I bought some for a friend with ovarian cancer. They have recently switched to teabags - you just steep a bag in a cup of boiling water and then put it in the fridge and drink it in 60ml doses throughout the day. I think that gives you the 1oz of herbs that Rene suggested. I have tried the Flor-Essence version which was very expensive and didn't seem to have any effect. I had a real sense of wellbeing whilst taking the Neways version for a "spring clean". That could be partly to do with Slippery Elm's effect on my asthma.

Another confirmation of the usefulness of pumpkin seeds from

[DLMURL] http://www.whatreallyworks.co.uk/start/qanda.asp?article_ID=679&offset=-1 [/DLMURL]

I have heard that pumpkin seeds contain nutrients that can help treat Benign Prostate Hypertrophy. Can you confirm this?
Mr A. Baker, Cheshire

Yes, I can. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of zinc, which is critical for male reproductive health and which plays an important role in cell division and repair. There are high concentrations of zinc in the male prostate gland which makes the prostatic fluid in which the sperm cells are mixed to make semen and daily zinc supplements have been shown to help the an enlarged prostate return to normal in 70% of sufferers who took 50mg a day for several months. Other natural sources include eggs, turkey, crabmeat, sunflower seeds and soybeans.

Pumpkin seeds are also an excellent source of the omega-3 fatty acids which the body cannot make but which are so difficult to get from your diet because they are fragile and damaged by heat. These essential nutrients are involved in brain development, nerve renewal and cardiovascular health and can also help lower high cholesterol levels.

You can eat pumpkin seeds raw or roasted and should aim for 1-2 ounces daily. Roasting improves the flavour, but will damage the omega-3 fatty acids. You can mail order Pumpkin Seed capsules from the Nutri Centre on 0800-587 2290. 100 x 300mg capsules cost £5.25. Take 4 a day.

They are very mild in their natural state - are yours roasted and salted or something?
I sometimes grind some up with linseed, sunflower and sesame seed and have the mixture
as part of a veg/fruit juice.

RE: Pumpkin Seeds for Prostate Health?

Although I have not had verification with my GP, I have an enlarged prostate which I am sure about due to the well documented symptoms on the intranet and elsewhere. I have been taking, on a daily basis, Saw Palmetto Complex capsules and, more recently, Flaxseed Oil capsules in an effort to hopefully reduce the prostate but have found that neither of these have effectively reduced my symptoms by any noticeable degree. I will certainly consider trying Pumpkin Seed capsules as recommended in the posts here, but I do have a question. Should I simply stop taking the Saw Palmetto and Flaxseed Oil and replace with the Pumpkin Seeds or is it advisable to take all three?

H&B do huge bags of the stuff, already shelled, at a reasonable price. I like to snack on the stuff (my parents occasionally bought it from china town in London), but didn't know about the prostate link. Handy I guess.

Good luck to anyone above with such problems btw.

RE: Pumpkin Seeds for Prostate Health?

Franco.

Please, please, please, forget about taking this or that, and get your PSA level taken. I am hopefully free of cancer now because I found it at an early stage when my PSA was 17. There is no future, literally in hiding your face in the sand. Every man over 45 has an enlarged prostate, resulting from, at the very least BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) and in a significant proportion of cases, Prostate Cancer. If you have to get up at night to pee too many times, then you have BPH, there is no escaping that fact, so get your PSA level checked.

RE: Pumpkin Seeds for Prostate Health?

Hi Franco,

Prostate cancer is often a silent killer. You don't know until you have a PSA test if your Prostate is simply enlarged or if there is a tumour there.

My husband was diagnosed 2.5 years ago with severe Prostate Cancer and it was thought it had spread. The cancer had been growing for years, and he did not have any symptoms until a month before visiting his GP, when he was getting up several times in the night to visit the toilet.

He is very lucky to have caught it just literally days before it spread to his pelvis and bones.

The lovely and sadly late Bob Monkhouse experienced the same sort of thing, but in his back. His back hurt dreadfully and he thought he had normal backache, until he went to his GP and found he had cancer for a long long time, of the Prostate, and it had showed no signs and spread up to his bones without anyone knowing. He did manage to survive another 18 months or so, but it was already too late.

My hubby takes the whole range, including pumpkin seeds, which we buy as a supplement from a well known shop, and we double the dose. We do this as the digestive system attacks and breaks down all foods as they enter, so you loose some of the goodness.

Hope this is helpful.

Love Gillyxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
