Has anyone heard of Retro Patella Generation (may be spelt wrong). I have a friend who has a lot of pain in his knees and takes over the counter painkillers. Has anyone got any information on this and would any aromatherapy oils help with the pain e.g. lavender, camomile.

RE: Retro Patella Generation

Will be retropatellar degeneration. 😮

It's what it says really - it's when the cartilage at the back of the knee cap starts to break down & it's the inflammation that goes with it that causes the pain. Pain killers & anti-inflammatories (NSAID's) will only contribute to the degeneration. Pain killers, because they're masking the problem & NSAID's because they block the inflammatory process, which is part of the healing process. Essentially, while it's inflammed the body is still trying to heal itself - it just may be losing the battle in the face of adverse mecahanical compromise.

Assuming that the patellae are the only joints affected, then it's fair to say that there are undue stresses in this area causing this.

It's one of those things that needs assesing properly & of course I'm going to suggest by an osteopath.

Adverse tension on the patellae can be caused by a number of problems including:

A flexed knee posture where they don't or are unable to fully extend the knee, so as to put their full load bearing weight thru the patellae whilst compresing it against the knee joint proper. When standing upright the knee caps should be loose & mobile & be able to be moved from side to side.

The patella runs in a groove at the front of the knee & if the medial (toward mid line of body) tension & the lateral (away from mid line) tension is out of balance, then it will put undue stress on the posterior medial or lateral aspect of the patella.

Really, if these are the only joints affected, then it's fairly easily treated with osteopathy.

Obviously - I wouldn'r worry too much about spelling either!
