Hi all

Before I start this post, I should just say that I have this morning seen the nurse practitioner at my GPs surgery (apparently to get an appointment with a Doctor you have to book about three months in advance! I exaggerate of course.) Anyway, she was baffled and sent me off to have an x-ray and I now have to wait for the results of this and will see my GP next week. However, I wondered if my problem might seem familiar to anyone....

About ten days ago I started to experience a twinge of pain in my right thigh, just above the knee and a little to the outside of my leg. It only happened about once a day and I simply ignored it, believing it would go away. Well, to my alarm, it hasn't gone away and has actually got worse, to the extent that it's now happening every few minutes.

The pain is very fleeting, almost like an electric shock, and is getting to be quite painful. It can happen at any time, while I'm walking, sitting or lying down - it doesn't seem to have a trigger. I was worried about DVT but don't have any other indications of this - my leg is not swollen or red and is not tender to the touch. It feels more like a nerve pain than a muscle or bone problem. I haven't done anything, that I can remember, that could have set it off.

When the pain strikes now, it's often severe enough to make me swear (under my breath of course!) but it is so fleeting that it goes away instantly. So far it hasn't stopped me doing anything and I am still hoping that it might just go away and not need medical intervention.

So....does this sound familiar to anyone? I am completely mystified, as was the nurse practitioner. But I would be more than happy if it stopped!

Dear Sunanda,
I wonder if you are right and it is a nerve pain. Is there anyone you could go to to have a look at you sooner than next week - someone who does bodywork? you may have twisted your pelvis and irritated a nerve - got to go out now but will have a look at my notes to see possibilities - back in an hour or so.

Hi Sharon

Thanks for your thoughts. It has been pointed out to me that something might be twanging my sciatic nerve, round the front as it were rather than higher up and at the back. I had serious shooting pains down the back of my upper leg a few years ago but haven't had these for a few years. I put them down at the time to going barefoot on concrete floors in India plus sitting on concrete floors. As soon as I realised what was going on, I started to sit always on a mat and incorporated some extra stretches into my daily yoga routine. (Have to confess to not being able to kick start my yoga practice at the moment!)

I don't know of any bodyworkers round here - but could probably find some if I tried. I have booked myself a massage for Thursday - just aromatherapy, nothing too 'therapy' - I was terribly impressed with the masseuse last time and I know she's also qualified in Reflexology.

I've also realised that I sit at my laptop on a low stool, with a cushion on it. My body is sideways on to the bench the laptop sits on - I just might be skewed....will find a new position and see if that helps. Mind you when I sit on the sofa with the lappy on my lap I'm beset with fears that some kind of 'ray' is going to leak out!

Bye for now.
Love

Hi For what its worth I would recommend a visit to a chiropractor. I had a pain 'nerve?' in my thigh which was like a numbness accompanied by a pain at times. He suggested a trapped nerve and a couple of sessions cured it. Can be a bit rough these guys but as they say, 'no gain without pain!'
Hope thats all it is.

hi Sunanda - sounds like you are twisting your pelvis as you sit then! If you stand up, and twist your jeans around your waist and then try and walk - that's what you are doing to your insides by settling down in a twisted position. So - untwist your jeans, and get yourself a work station whcih would be approved of by a health and safety inspector. Can you use a dining table and chair? Otherwise you will suffer ...but you know that already.
It sounds as if it's a nerve that's been pinched - either a lateral branch of the sciatic nerve, which runs along the fibula,or one of the more superficial, femoral nerves.

Do you have a position in which you are comfortable?

When you stand, can you feel that one side of your pelvis is higher and rotated forward of the other? Are your feet and knees matching pairs? (ie does one knee drop in towards the centre more than the other, doesone foot have a dropped arch?)

Isn't that strange? Last night, after reading your last post, sharon, I sat and kind of got in touch with my body and it all suddenly made sense. I really hadn't felt that I was twisted when using the laptop, the twist was tiny if you like, but it's obviously had an effect and I can almost trace just where it's 'got' me just by 'feeling'. And yet up until then it just hadn't occurred to me that the pains in my thigh were anything to do with that.
Well, I shall be making an appointment with my old chiropractor toute suite. It's a bit of a journey but she is excellent. Unfortunately I haven't got room for a workstation/desk but I shall not sit sideways on any more and I shall think about how I can change things permanently. Thanks for being my catalyst, Sharon, if you know what I mean!:D
