Hello, everyone, still raining outside, but I digress. Read on unless you're wearing a tie.
I'm 54 and have a resting heart rate usually in the mid-50's. A little low perhaps but I do a lot of cardio exercise so that could be the reason for it. When I first wake up in the morning I've recently noticed that my heart is going a tad faster. I started monitoring it and it's mid-50's before going to sleep and then late 60's when I first wake up. Hardly racing of course and it doesn't wake me up, it just seems a little peculiar.
I've tried using the illustrious "Google" and read a bit about anxiety disorders and sympathetic nerve system sleep wake transitions - most of the info is too non-specific and fairly ambiguous, so if anyone has any personal experience of this phenomenon I would be interested to hear (or read) it.
Thank you very much.

Albert,
I don't have personal experience of it; never monitored by heart rate that closely.
It's certainly not a high heart rate, and it wouldn't surpise me if the body raises the heart rate above normal resting to bring us around from our sleeping state, especially as it will be kick-starting many of the body's systems that slow down during sleep, such as the digestive system etc. I doubt it's anything to be concerned about, though if you're unsure, go and speak to a doctor and see what they say.

I agree with Giles. I doubt very much if that is a sign of anything untoward - but I recognise the fact that you know your own body best. If you have any concerns why not make an appointment at a 'well man' clinic at your surgery? Or if they don't have one just say you want to make an appointment for a general check up - which will include blood pressure, heart rate etc.
Well peeps, a friend of mine who has a septic foot was seeing her GP today so I asked her to throw the thread topic into conversation. It appears as though there are a multitude of potential factors. Even things as simple as sleeping with your head under the covers or lying on your front instead of your back can make the heart work a tad harder. It just proves the old saying "the longer it rains the closer it is to stopping".
