Hello!

The panicking boyfriend with hypertension (my previous post) is less panicked now!

However, he's experiencing some side effects that he doesn't like, has anyone experienced the same and knows what might help (without him needing to take any pills or medications!) He wont let me give him reflexology by the way!

Symptoms are: lack of sex drive, feeling the cold more than usual, coming down with colds more regularly, annoying cough!

Any thoughts peeps?

Axx

My doc says...

If my blood pressure is up ( higher than normal) ( I'm already on 5ml) for stress reasons ect. that I can take a second dose at night! Does that make sense to anyone?
Tashanie... what would you say to this?

Thankyou

Liz

Hi. I've just joined the site and was interested in what Tashanie had to say.
I took your advice, and today I visited the local pharmasist for advice on medication contraindications (think that is the right word!). The pharmasist was lovely and she talked me through any problems. My main one being since I started tking ramipril (2.5mg a week ago today) I've become breathless when I do any exercise at all, which includes climbing the stairs. It's been getting that bad that I'm needing to stop and take a deep breath when I'm having a conversation just to get enough ar into my lungs.
I mentioned it to the GP on Monday and she just said "that's a shame".
I'm wondering if anyone else has suffered from breathlessness while taking ramipril?
I'm taking it for angina. I already have very low blood pressure, low cholesterol and healthy lifestyle but unfortunately have a big family history of dying early from heart attacks. 😮 apparently it's 20% lifestyle and 80% hereditary.

Ramipril - Ace Inhibitors

New to the Forum but a long term user of this drug. (9.5 years). Had mitral valve replaced (mechanical) late 2003 and was placed on this drug. 5mg twice daily. Despite my heart issues have never had HBP. In 2005 aortic sinus measured 4.8. No concern was shown at this high figure. Complained about side effects of ramipril (reduced sexual libido):( and dosage was reduced to 2.5 mg twice daily. More annual tests 2006 to 2011 had aortic sinus range from 3.7 to 4.2. Sexual drive improved very little. From Dec 2011 cardiologist increased dosage to 2.5 + 5.0 daily. On this dose now for 15 + months. Recent Echocardiagraph had aortic sinus at 4.95. Concern is shown when this reaches 5.00. Cardiologist now concerned about an aortic sinus aneurysm but declined to believe the increase in dosage of ramipril caused this. Internet research says this is exactly what ramipril does. 'quote' "making your blood vessels relax and widen". Has anyone had experience with ARB's as a replacement?

A combination of NLP, Time Line Therapytm and Hypnosis would be perfect for this -working with the power of the mind and without any tablets - let me know if I can answer any questions 😉

Hi all, cough is a very well recognised side effect of ramipril. If patients develop a cough on ramipril (an ace-inhibitor) then doctors usually stop the ramipril and try an ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker) such as losartan, candesartan, valsartan.

Side effects of ACE inhibitors include the development of a persistent dry cough in about 20% of users. This is more common in women and in people from Asia, and only disappears after discontinuation of the drug. and ...

In the 1990s, the angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which are highly selective inhibitors of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT-1), emerged as an alternative to ACE inhibition. In general they are as effective as ACE inhibitors at reducing blood pressure, but appear to have a longer duration of action, and in common with ACE inhibitors they inhibit the actions of angiotensin II on the cardiovascular system and kidney. They are very well tolerated by patients, with a placebo-like adverse effect profile. Cough and angio-oedema are much less likely to occur than with ACE inhibitors and most guidelines recommend switching patients to an ARB when an ACE-induced cough occurs. Cautions and contraindications are similar to those outlined for ACE inhibitors.

Best time to take RAMIPRIL

Hi all,

Has anyone asked doc what is best time to take RAMIPRIL daily? Appreciate any info and doc's explanation. Thanks.

Don't take Ramipril if you want Tinnitus! I had a HA in April 2015 & one of my HA drugs was 5mg/day Ramipril increased 2 months later to 7,5mg/day! Recently I have developed Tinnitus! I didn't take any of it yesterday & NO TINNITUS today! I've tried this before
& can confirm that the drug can give some people serious Tinnitus including me! I'd rather go terminal from HA than take anymore of Ramipril! Best Regards!

Hi All,:)
I have been given Ramapril(2.5mg) for HP.. 200/130.. and am on Prednisolne(15mg decreasing from60mg) for TA and thyroxine (100mg)for underactive thyroid..

so it was worring when I read the leaflet :eek:in the box re side effects, also found other internet forums with very negative posts on them..

I also suffer from asthma and the last thing Iwant is problems with my breathing. The high BP was only discovered when I went to the doctors complaing of fast palpations and breathlessness and a nagging headache....

I feel like I "shake, rattle and roll" with tablets and surely all these drugs must fight each other or even create other drugs when mixing in your body..

Any advise or help would be great... I don't want to stop, but don't want to wait about for the side effets to kick in or keep taking time off work being poorly.. ....
as no work... no pay.. so vicious circle

cheers.

I was taking 7.5mg/day Ramipril ! Then started with Tinnitus, which if you've never suffered, is a condition that makes you want to jump off a cliff! I have stopped it dead! & my GP is looking at an alternative because come hell or high water i will never take it again! After stopping it for two days, risking HA or stroke, my Tinnitus has gone! My BP is 140/80 with a pulse of 68b/min!

Henbow - you may not get a reply - this thread started 10 years ago, and the last contribution was almost 3 years ago.
Glad you've managed to sort your own problems - sounds like you have a very sympathetic GP!

My husband has tinnitus as a side effect of Labrynthitis so I really sympathise with your problem. Can I just say a BP or 140/80 is borderline for needing treatment so I am sure you are not risking much in the way of major problems. I presume you have looked at lifestyle changes? I used to be on anti-hypertensives but was able to come off them by making changes in my diet and and exercise.

Ramipril, sold under the brand name Altace among others, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, used to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. If you have diabetes, do not use ramipril together with any medication that contains aliskiren.
Taking Heroin daily basis and tried to reduce the amount of heroin intake. i wanted to go back to bodybuilding , Can I take heroin daily
(little amount and not been addicted) while my workout session and If I test urine, does the heroin present in the test? I have read the
blog on how long does heroin stay in your urine (slorecoverycenters)

Hi,
Initially I was prescribed Enalapril for High BP I experienced severe headache, tinnitus with terrible dizziness and the anxiety was horrendous. They changed my medication to Ramapril I started for 2 weeks on 2.5 mg now I,m on 5 I am still getting these horrendous side effects. At the moment I,m monitoring the BP but its still on the high side. I really dont want to keep taking these drugs so I,m hoping they can come up with a better alternative

Cairnview - there are many medications for those with high blood pressure. I was on amlodipine and am now on Losarthan. Don't suffer - ask for a different medication!

I wish I didn't have to take any medication for my condition but, alas, extensive research into natural alternatives have yielded beetroot juice as the being the best current option but the dosage is not standardised i.e. reliable as an option.

Ramipril is really good at lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attacks but it caused me some terrible side effects for the past 5 years. I decided to stick with it as my heart condition vastly improved from taking it also some of the early side effects seemed to wear off after a few months and others I just learned to live with the only one that would have made me stop taking it was a cough. I started on 5mg twice daily but could not tolerate it and was dropped back to 5mg once daily however after five years my blood pressure is now so low and everything under control that they have decided to lower it to 2.5mg daily so I will report if my side effects decrease.
