Hello!
The panicking boyfriend with hypertension (my previous post) is less panicked now!
However, he's experiencing some side effects that he doesn't like, has anyone experienced the same and knows what might help (without him needing to take any pills or medications!) He wont let me give him reflexology by the way!
Symptoms are: lack of sex drive, feeling the cold more than usual, coming down with colds more regularly, annoying cough!
Any thoughts peeps?
Axx
RE: RAMIPRIL - ACE INHIBITORS
all of the symptoms mention could be side effects of the drug (from [link= http://www.medicines.org.uk ]www.medicines.org.uk[/link]) (Other adverse reactions: Disturbances of balance, headache, nervousness, restlessness, tremor, sleep disorders, confusion, loss of appetite, depressed mood, feeling of anxiety, paraesthesiae, uncommonly, disturbances of smell and taste or partial, sometimes complete loss of taste, muscle cramps, erectile impotence and reduced sexual desire may occur, precipitation or intensification of Raynaud's phenomenon)especially the the cough which is a classic symptom. If it persists then he is probably best to change medication, there are lots of choices to change to, i expect he will be given a angiotensin-II receptor antagonist, which are slightly different to ace-inhibitors, so may not get the side effects. If he is not happy then he should definately talk to his doctor to find the best solution, otherwise he probably will end up not taking them.
RE: RAMIPRIL - ACE INHIBITORS
Hello
Please don't worry re the side effects. I was on Ramipril for about three months - 10mg daily - I can relate well to the "annoying cough" - more commonly referred to as a dry cough! When mentioned to the doctor is was changed immediately to an alternative and the dry cough went away straight away. Hang on in there!!!!
G
p..s Reflexology everytime!!!!! hehehe

Hi
I am new to this forum and wanted to know a bit more about Ramipril. I have been taking 2.5 mg/day now for about a month due to hypertension. BP is usually around 150/100, I'm 35 years old and female. Hypertension runs in the family on my mothers side. Since taking it I find that I am extremely nervous and shake quite a lot - especially when reaching for things say, from a shelf. I note that nervousness is a side effect but wondered if anyone else had experienced this. I guess my case isn't so straight forward though as I have been diagnosed with sarcoidosis and am also taking prednisolone. My renal function is impaired too due to nephrocalcinonis as a result of hypercalcaemia (due to the sarcoid). Anyway, that aside, does anyone else have this problem with shaking and nervousness due to ramipril? Thank you.
Anna.
RE: RAMIPRIL - ACE INHIBITORS
A combination of NLP, Time Line Therapytm and Hypnosis would be perfect for this -working with the power of the mind and without any tablets - let me know if I can answer any questions 😉

RE: RAMIPRIL - ACE INHIBITORS
Hi,
I was interested in all of the replies, but I think they all miss a point. As well as Ramipril, you are on other medication. I have a full house of heart problems (Cardio Myopia, high BP, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and angina) and am taking Ramipril (10mg), Statins, Beta blockers, as well as other less potent drugs. The doctors seem to know how the individual drugs react, but when you take a cocktail of drugs, the side effects can be VERY STRANGE.
I find that I am also very nervous, occasional shakes and not very good in crowds of people and my confidence level has dropped. I also have major mood swings. There are many other side effects that often make me question the wisdom of taking these drugs.
Bottom line is, do I want to live a longer life acknowledging that I have a heart problem and changing my lifestyle accordingly or do I want to be my old self, liable to have a massive heart attack at any moment?
I have opted to change my lifestyle and acknowledge my problem. This actually helps and when I start to have mood swings or any other side effect, I just say to myself "come on drugs, do your worst" and a few hours later I am normally better.
Stick with it, I have been on these drugs for over a year now and having identified all of the side effects, it is easy to deal with them. Ramipril works well and you are only on a small dose. Just be positive and accept that there are side effects.
Accepting the side effects is the real battle and once you have acknowledged them, life gets easier.
Good luck
Tony

Could anyone tell me the difference between APO Ramipril and Ratio Ramipril, Health plan accepts and pays for one but not the other!
Impossible to deal with!

How do you deal with the shaking and not being able to look family, friends and colleagues in the eye? If I hadn't stumbled across a post on this site I would have continued taking ramipril. Anxiety would have soared higher and I probably would have broken down completely. For me, ramipril totally debilitated all aspects of my life. I might be jumping the gun but after just two days without ramipril I feel positive again and able to cope.

Hi Anna
I suggest you go back to your GP. I work in a urology ward and we normally stop Ramipril in patients with impaired renal function.
To everyone else experiencing unwanted and possibly intolerable side effects from medications - please go back to your GP and discuss this further there are so many other options available for things like this. Down here ACE inhibitors are generally not first line for primary (simple) hypertension, although I appreciate that will vary around the country and depending on which drug reps have called recently and what the local specialist physicians favour.
Hi ... I am new to this forum. Like Tony (in this forum) I take a cocktail of drugs, I have a heart condition (age 50), not the heart it’s self but a couple blocked arteries. (Had an heart attack and didn’t know about it until going into the hospital for a check up)
My problem is my sleeping. I cannot get to sleep until very late in the night or early in the morning. Some sleeps last 7 hours and then about every 3rd or 4th night I end up sleeping 12-14 hours, wake up sweating, the pillow is soaked.
I have been on Apo-Ramipril (for about 18 months) 5MG in morning and 5MG at night, course because of my sleeping I end up not taking them at the same time in morning or same time at night.
At the start of taking this Ramipril I was very nervous, occasional shakes especially after first getting up from a sleep. I talked to the doctor about this and was given Novo-Venlafaxine, first 75MG in the mornings and when I went back to the doctors a couple of months later was increased to 150MG.
I mentioned to my doctor the sleeping problems and asked about changing some meds in hope of getting back to normal sleeping ... he said that none of the drugs I was taking would cause this problem of sleeping.
As for coughing I take Ratio Codeine for a previous back injury (some 20 yrs ago) and never have a problem because of taking this med.
As for life style, I have never had a great appetite but always eat fruit and raw vegs every day and stay away from fast foods. No deep fried foods and very little red meat, mostly chicken without the skins.
I smoke (and not over weight) but have been trying to cut down from 30 cigs a day to 10-12 and have difficulty trying to do some exercise.
Other meds taking - Lorazepam, Crestor, Ran-Rabeprazole, Novo-Metoprol and Novo-Quinine
As for crowds of people and confidence level, I never really enjoyed crowds but like to be with small groups of people. Before I couldn’t stand to stay at home and always had to be going some where or doing something, but now I find most days if I really do not have to go out I can spend time on the computer for hours. I have had a computer for over 10 years so it isn’t the Internet addiction of newer users. LOL
I was hoping that someone who is experiencing this sleeping problems shares on this forum and further hoping that some who has got over this sleeping problem can tell what they did .... I'm INTERESTED IN ALL REPLIES.
Hi cubaman. You can get sleep disturbance as a side effect of statins especially when they are taken in the evening. Although this is the best time to take them because of the physiology it may be worth discussing this with you GP and seeing if you can reschedule the time you take them. Taking a sleeping tablet or other drug for that side effect just to counter the side effects of a med is daft imo, however there is a risk/benefit ratio to consider in all these things.
The statin is Crestor (rosuvastatin).
Best of luck.
I was on Ramipril for 5 years + and had to come off of them earlier this year, due to suffering an allergic reaction, (1 in a 1000 people get urticaria thru taking these tabs), on and off since March 07 resulting in 10 very severe attacks from Easter to the end of April, to the point where it was affecting my breathing and the swelling of my mouth, my face was completely swollen, it was very scary. I have been told, by the Dr who was supposed to perform allergy testing that it is actually due to my underactive thyroid and that the Ramipril set it off. I am now on Amlodipine.
i have just gone up to a higher dose 10mg been waking half way through the night with anxiety and then drift in and out of sleep having what seem to be really bad nightmares and then feel very nervous with palpitaions
Try the Dash Diet for hypertension
Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered that my blood pressure is raised and my doctor wants to start me on an ace inhibitor.
However, I am really worried about the side effects which are well documented.
I searched the internet and found the DASH diet which promises to lower blood pressure within a few weeks.
I have started on it (only 3 days so far) and am feeling better already. I am overweight too so hoping my weight will come down as well as my blood pressure.
The DASH diet encourages increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables and low-fat dairy products as well as eating whole-grain cereals, breads, rice and pasta. Nuts, seeds and legumes are included and meat, fish and poultry is reduced.
There are loads of website on the DASH diet so it is worth exploring it in the hope of either reducing medication or stopping it eventually.
Hope this helps someone. It is sad that doctors very seldom discuss alternative ways of reducing blood pressure. I wonder if they are given incentives to get as many people as possible on blood pressure treatments.
Would love to hear what others think.
Could anyone tell me the difference between APO Ramipril and Ratio Ramipril, Health plan accepts and pays for one but not the other!
APO is made by Apotex Pharmaceuticals
RATIO is made by RatioPharm.
Both are the same chemical compound: RAMIPRIL.
Best time to take RAMIPRIL
Hi all,
Has anyone asked doc what is best time to take RAMIPRIL daily? Appreciate any info and doc's explanation. Thanks.
Anyway, that aside, does anyone else have this problem with shaking and nervousness due to ramipril? Thank you.
I doubt if 2.5mg RAMIPRIL can have any sensible side-effects other than a bit of coughing. I am took 5mg for years, and now on 10mg.

Hi there glasselgig!
How are things going? I expect you are feeling a good deal better and your BP has reduced by now!
Personally I would be very reluctant to go on an ACE inhibitor unless diet hadn't worked. Mine has recently normalised through diet in the last year - basically using the DASH programme as you recommend. There is an excellent 64 page download available from the American National Institutes of Health (a govt.-based organisation) available .
Medical doctors in UK do 6 hours on nutrition in 6 years of training, so have little understanding of how to use food instead of medicine to treat people. With Western diets becoming more and more based on junk foods (processed, damaged, high fat and high sugar foods) so our health will suffer as a consequence. Overall doctors have very little idea how lack of specific nutrients can cause problems and their only answer is medication. We have all learned to follow this line too - much to our detriment. It is also well known that there are incentives to use drugs.
The trial studies and information has been out there for anyone to read and learn from, but few of us have been informed how important this is or where to find it.
Before anyone is encouraged to go on drugs, unless it is an emergency, I'd seriously ask if you can try dietary changes first, follow the DASH diet or similar wholefood diet, and then be reassessed. The diet may take a few weeks to make an enormous difference, but it surely will.
Wishing you all the best of health
Caroline
Hi All,:)
I have been given Ramapril(2.5mg) for HP.. 200/130.. and am on Prednisolne(15mg decreasing from60mg) for TA and thyroxine (100mg)for underactive thyroid..
so it was worring when I read the leaflet :eek:in the box re side effects, also found other internet forums with very negative posts on them..
I also suffer from asthma and the last thing Iwant is problems with my breathing. The high BP was only discovered when I went to the doctors complaing of fast palpations and breathlessness and a nagging headache....
I feel like I "shake, rattle and roll" with tablets and surely all these drugs must fight each other or even create other drugs when mixing in your body..
Any advise or help would be great... I don't want to stop, but don't want to wait about for the side effets to kick in or keep taking time off work being poorly.. ....
as no work... no pay.. so vicious circle
cheers.

its a good idea to take Q10 with statins, reading up on statins and taking them myself they are not the wonder drug they make them out to be,made me feel very ill l have since stop taking them and no longer fall a sleep at 4 oclock each day or sweat ,aches and pains have gone too
Hi everyone,
I have just been given Ramipril 2.5mg 1x daily in place of my usual Bp tablet - Olmasarten 20mg and the reason given was that Ramipril is better for my heart.
I have took my first tablet today and reading posts on here i am a little worried about what to expect re- side effects.
I experienced 3 day stay in hospital when i was switched from Atenalol about 5yr ago with a massive rise in Bp and major palpitations - so dont want a repeat of that.
My other meds are Metformin 500mg, for PCOS, Bendrohydrofluizide for Bp, Lanzoprazil for Acid relating to a liver stone and Asprin. Supposed to take 1000mg of metrofmin but only take the 1 due to the sweating issues so little worried that the Ramipril will make me sweat more...?
Do the side effects subside after a time or are they constant.
Thanks for any assistance.

Hi to everyone, I'm an actor & comedian who relies totally on his voice to get a living. Two years ago I started clearing my throat & coughing & went through some very intrusive tests on my chest & throat My voice was getting more hoarse with every passing week. My throat specialist diagnosed reflux but as I'd been taking Omeprazole for a long time for heartburn, I couldn't quite accept that as the problem. I went to see an eminent professor last week who specialises in coughs. He took one look at the medication I was on for various other problems & said all my coughing fits were down to the 10mg of Ramipril I was taking. I stopped taking it four days ago & my cough has virtually disappeared & my voice is getting stronger every day. I had also lost my libido & my desire for sexual activity was non existant, this is also a major side effect of Ramipril so I'm praying that will also improve. The problems all started when I started taking Ramipril 2 years ago. I hope this is a help to anyone who has needlessly suffered the same as I have. Knuttsford:):)
Ramipril
I'm really pleased I logged on this evening. I had a major heart attack last year, (56, female, don't smoke, vegetarian, worked as a fitness instructor for 14 years, exercised every day of my life, BMI of 23, ( life can sometimes be so darn unfair) and, although my BP is low, occasionally really low 83/50, I have been on Ramipril 2.5mg since May of 2009. For the last 5 weeks, I have had a really raspy voice and, sexy though it sounds(!), it has been worrying me. Having been through such an awful experience (I also have skin lymphoma), my first thought has been that it was cancer of the larynx. I know, of course, of the coughing symptom which I have had from day 1, but it was tolerable and, if it was helping me stay alive, a small price to pay. Now, having read through this forum, I feel more reassured that the loss of voice is indeed yet another symptom of Ramipril. My GP has taken me off the Ramipril for four weeks, though has not replaced them with anything else and I go back to see him then - hopefully my voice will have recovered.
Hello, I just signed up to this forum as there seem to be a lot of really helpful people here. Reading through this thread I seem to be having the same problems.
I had a heart attack in April and had two stents inserted to open up my LAD artery. I'm currently on (apologies for any spelling errors) Ramipril, Bisoprolol, Clopidogrel plus Aspirin in the morning and Srinivastatin at night.
I'm getting most of the Ramipril symptoms, which is really depressing me at present. But something I also keep getting is mouth ulcers. I only seem to get one at a time, but more like a small cluster and I've never had so many in succession before. Most occur under the tongue, on the fleshy bit that moves, so I'm always irritated by them when I speak or eat. I've had some cold sores too. In the past I have suffered some foliculitis around my mouth but only had one episode of that so far back in May.
The obvious thing in common is that there all infections of the mouth area. I maintain good hygiene, always keep my teeth clean, use mouthwash a lot, chew dental gum etc. I've been taking Tetracycline as an anti-biotic to try and clear this up.
Am I unique? or is this also a common problem?
Something my cardiac doctor said was that these infections may be caused by my general state of well being. With so many issues I really am a bit run down and I'm struggling to see how I can continue with these symptoms in the medium/long term. So feeling physically run down and mentally a bit defeated too. Like many people I do have some great supportive people around me, they keep my spirits up and I don't know where I'd be without them.
Just remembered, one other symptom is eczema, on the ears and hairline.
Any help or advice appreciated.
Ramipril - Chest Tightness
Hi All,
I have been taking Ramipril to reduce BP and yes it is effective 5mg daily. Down to 130/76 and 60hr in mornings now so great result. But after a month I had to see GP. My chest felt tight and heavy all the time and worse when I exercised. Sent off to chest pain clinic and they found some mild abnormalities MR (Mitral Regurgitation) and beat to beat variations. So waiting for angiogram CT. Still waiting. After another 3 weeks I went back to GP and again mentioned tight chest before she gave me another prescription. To be honest it just made me feel down, cant gym any more, cant run and constantly worried about chest pain. Couldn't seem to get a full breath. These are symptoms that I did not have before.
Lack of sex drive, but worse than than lack of lust for life.
To my relief GP said that they had not seen connect between tight chest and ramipril, so I've now been prescribed something else - Amlodipine. Letting my blood clear for 48 hours first before taking dose and keeping an eye on BP. To be honest at just over 35 hours I feel normal again. Ramipril was almost like a dark cloud, it made me feel miserable and like I was going to die. I gave it 2 months but enough was enough.
Different meds suit different people I guess. And I am aware that Amlodipine has its own side effects. Swollen ankles quite likely and a host more. But most of all I feel that I have the old me back, Id go as far to say that Ramipril made me depressed.
I may just see how I feel after 48 hours and check BP regularly. If it remains low I'll leave it a little longer. I've made massive lifestyle changes over the last two months. Really healthy eating, no alcohol at all (one thing I found out is that ramipril and alcohol DO NOT mix well). I don't smoke. My weakness is stress, surrounded in it - so working on how how to deal with it.
Best of luck to you all, just felt my story may be of use for someone and good to share after you had all made the same effort. I'll come back and let you know how it goes with Amlodipine if I take it - it is some kind of calcium antagonist by the sounds of it, a heart / artery de-scaler. I'll find out if I need this after CT angiogram.

Cheers
Peter
New to Ramipril
hi Guys,
I've been on 2.5 of Ramipril for just over a week now after suffering a single severe palpitation 2 weeks ago. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure.
I was perfectly "normal" before this palpitation and now I feel my life has changed forever and am stuck on meds for the rest of my life.
I was doing really well losing weight and going to the gym regularly. I lost 2st in weight from last Christmas to now and I'm wondering if it's the weight loss that has started the high blood pressure and my body is just adjusting.
So I've been on Ramipril for just over a week and symptons include tingly hot face and head and feeling anxious and nervous several times a day. My blood pressure floats between 130 and 160, I take a reading in the morning and the evening just before taking the ramipril.
I seem to be largely OK during the day but early evening when I'm sat watching TV I just et all anxious for no reason. Like just before a big speech or meeting. My heart races and my face gets hot and tingly.
I'm usually such a happy person and have an outgoing personality but I have to admit the whole episode has changed me and I am now starting to feel depressed about the change in my life, the side effects, and the change of character that seems to be happening.
I am going to see the doctor shortly to discuss this but just wanted to document my feelings and maybe get some moral support that my life will get better and this is just a short term glitch in my bodies system.
Regards
Jeff
As well as telling your doctor about the side effects you are experiencing, you should maybe fill in a yellow card. You can do it online . I hope you get better soon.

Surprised that with such high BP you were only given 2.5 ? I just wish I knew more about this drug. I'm on 5mg... I don't think I have any side effects. But lately pressure has been higher 140/ 100 ? I'm kinda leary of taking a higher dose. I do know what I need to do to lower... For you, I would ask a pharmacist , they know more about mixing meds 🙂 I just needed to get in here and see I'm not alone 🙂 CHEERS
