Hi all,

I am posting because I am concerned about my younger sister, who in February developed chest pains and difficulty breathing. The episodes come and go and seem unaffected by stress, sleep schedule, food, environment, and physical activity. While they occur, they last anywhere from half an hour to a few days, and she measured a 90 BPM resting heart rate. She has been seen by a professional, but an EKG revealed there was nothing wrong (she went in while she was feeling fine, so we actually don't have a scan of her heart while she has an episode). She is 130lb, 5'5", moderately physically active, high-achieving and stressed high school student, and a large chunk of her diet is meat.

My sister also has central diabetes insipidus for which she takes Desmopressin TEVA 0.1mg tablets bidaily, and in June she started a generic form of YAZ birth control for her acne.

I would like any input on possibly what my sister has, and what lifestyle changes our family should help her to make.

Bless all.

Hi melfang - Welcome to HealthyPages 🙂

I can understand your concern about your sister having these episodes. It must bother her too, I'm sure.

In as much as the drug she is on affects her whole metabolism and mineral and hormone balance it is not possible to give any specific advice.

I don't know where you are situated but if possible seeing a doctor qualified in Functional Medicine may well give you/her the answers to your questions about what is going on. If there is no one within reach it may be possible to do a consultation with Skype.

Meanwhile I suggest you have a careful look at alkaline diets for helping her body restore itself. You say she has a high meat diet - this leaves the body with an acid 'ash' (results of metabolism) making it more difficult to function as it should - the body functions better when mildly alkaline. So eating lots of vegetables and some fruit could make all the difference, while reducing the meat intake somewhat. She needs to try this slowly and listen to her body, but be guided always by her healthcare provider.

I hope she gets sorted soon.

Hi Melfang and welcome to Healthypages,

It would be wrong for anyone online to attempt to diagnose such a condition, not simply because the symptoms are not available right in front of us, but more so because, in many )(if not all) countries, it is legally wrong from non-medical practitioners to offer diagnosis for medical conditions.

I'm guessing from the way in which you describe the situation (the wording you use), that you're in the U.S.?

If your sister keeps on getting these symptoms regularly, then she should get back in touch with the doctor and insist on being monitored (they should be able to provide some sort of portable monitor she can strap to herself so she can get on with things without being tied to a hospital or lab). The other thing she could do is to call for an emergency doctor/ambulance to get her to the hospital when one of these episodes occurs so she can be monitored immediately to help identify the cause.

It could be any of a number of things, physical or psychological, or even the meds she's already on. Whatever the cause, I hope you manage to find out what it is and she gets the help she needs.

All Love and Reiki Hugs
