About 3 weeks ago I had to go to the dentist as I had pain in my lower jaw. The dentist said that I had a hole in my wisdom tooth and that, because it's impacted and coming in at an angle, I'd have to go to the oral surgeon at the hospital to get it removed. She also gave me some amoxicillin.

The pain came back a few days ago so off I went to the dentist again. She said I had another infection and gave me some more antibiotics. She said there's not much we can to but keep getting antibiotics to hold me over until it comes out. I've phones the hospital and they told me that, by the time I get an assessment appointment and then an appointment for removal, it'd probably be about February before it's out.

It's super sore right now. I've been taking my antibiotics as well as paracetamol but it's not helping with the pain. It's a constant ache with the occasional shooting pain thrown in, especially when I eat. Plus the hinge of my jaw under the tooth feels bigger on the left side. I really can't handle this for the next few months plus the instructions for my painkillers says you shouldn't take them for more than a few days at a time.

Is there anything else I could be taking/doing to help kill the pain? I can't take Ibuprofen right now because I'm taking Naproxen for a shoulder injury. Would it be worth making an appointment with my Doctor for some advice? I'm not sure if they'd help because it's a tooth problem but my dentist says that, basically, I have to deal because she can't do anything else for me as it needs a surgeon.

Thanks 😉

Oh ouch, I feel for you.

Been there done that!
My wisdom teeth all came up sideways and the pain…whoa, unbelievable.
Our first baby had just been born and it was tough going, babe in arms and that amount of pain.

Dentist told me there was a two year wait at the hospital and to be honest, there was no way I was waiting two years with that pain.
My husband did a lot of jumping up and down, because I was in so much pain, I could barely move let alone speak.

Somehow - not sure how but he managed to get me an appointment within the maxillofacial unit at the hospital, I was seen within days.
Prescribed diclofenac which worked a treat, I was out of pain at last and one week later he removed the tooth.

I will never forget that wonderful man who extracted that wicked tooth.
Keep banging on doors….you have my very best wishes. 🙂

Much like Louisa's husband, I jumped up and down on behalf of my daughter who had been in pain for months, but not told anyone (other than the dentist who had her on codiene for about 2.5 months)!

Once I started banging doors and rattled bars (very politely and calmly, I have to add), I got her an 'urgent' appointment with the maxillo-facial department and she was seen the following week, and surgery was arranged 4 days after that - all four wisdom teeth were removed. She went in to the day unit at 0800, and I collected her at midday. It took the surgeon about 30 minutes to extract all four. Why they still insist on making people wait months for urgent treatment is a joke.
We also looked into having it done through Bupa - it would have cost a couple of thousand pounds, but she could have had the surgery within a week - luckily the NHS came through in the end!
I had all mine removed when I was 21. I woke up after the surgery looking forward to a bowl of jelly, and was given toast and told it was therapeutic!!!

Hi,
Tooth pain is hideous.
I always use homoeopathy for tooth pain. Hypericum 10M for any temporary nerve pain works like a dream. There are so many remedies you can use - Apis, Mercury, Hekla Lava, Staph.....etc

I would suggest you speak to a homoeopath and they can help a great deal and in some cases even remove the need for surgery. But find a qualified and experienced homoeopath.

Kind regards,
Christina

Hi I feel your pain, I've been dogged with wisdom tooth pain, over the years and it can be so frustrating when you feel they are not taking your pain seriously. Short term pain relief measures which worked for me were ice packs to numb the area, salt mouthwashes and herbal mouthwashes with antibiotic / antibacterial herbs such as garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, ti tree, myrrh. Hope you get this sorted soon 🙂
