Hiya
Has anyone got or had any experience with wisdom teeth. I have one, and it is driving me mad!!!
It seems to have stopped growing but i have got this irritating bit of gum that covers half of it. I have to be really careful to clean it but sometimes, no matter how hard I try I find food debris under it[:'(]
Do u think that the dentist will take it out for me, as appart from this problem it is a healthy tooth?
Tx

RE: Wisdom tooth

Trinity, sounds like it's impacted, that means that some of it is still under the gum which causes irritation and is also hard to keep clean and gets inflamed as you have found out.

Best to see the dentist. Usually they will take them out - not pleasant, but recovery is usually fairly quick.

Meanwhile after cleaning, rinse the area with salt water or put some clove or tea tree oil on a cotton bud and rub over the area, to stop infection.

Hope it fees better soon.

Lesley

RE: Wisdom tooth

Had one of those when I was a student.

I went to the dental training hospital in Liverpool. You just turn up & wait your turn & it's free.

A senior student does the work, but they're all supervised.

My own college clinic worked on simillar principal, so I thought why not. It saved having to wait for an appointment & they did an exellent job. Now I think about & stick my finger in my gob - I remember they took the upper one out because it was that that was irritating the lower one. Flap of gum like yours, incidentally.

There may be a dental college near you. 😀

RE: Wisdom tooth

Hi Trinity,

I haven't had any problems with my wisdom teeth, but my son has. The dentist will take out the tooth, don't worry!

Ouch!

Love, Patsy.

Hi T

There is a teaching dental hospital at guys London Bridge if you ever come to London. Not sure where a one would be near to you.

I had all 4 of mine out there when I was 21 as they impacted and started to grow sideways and were pushing my other teeth and if left they would all end up crooked! It was not true that they give you lots of ice-cream either they said we had to eat toast and cereal etc to help get rid of any infection (YUK!) however it was too painful to eat much of anything for a while however that was because I had to have all 4 out!!

My jaw used to lock when I ate too did not do it anymore after they came out!

RE: Wisdom tooth

I had a wisdom tooth just like yours, I had it taken out, what the destist does, is gives you an injection, slightly cut the gum, of the excess tissue, and applies what I would call a pair of pliars, presses down on the tooth, and removes it. It does sound horrible, but it wasn't, the only pain you feel is when the dentist presses down on the tooth.

The only thing is they take a while to heal, the dentist told me it would take about two to two and half months to heal.

I am very glad it is out, as all I sufered was infection, after infection.

Good Luck, it will be all worth it in the end, I promise.
