I had a tooth extracted 6 days ago, it was a lower chewing tooth, the dentist took 40 minutes to extract one of the roots, I had previously lost the crown and she told me the tooth had a deep infection (although I hadnt felt any pain)- as I am due to go to Cyprus for my daughters wedding on 31st March I decided to let her extract it as Id rather have sore gums than an abscess and didn't want to have problems abroad, well as the days have progressed I have been in agony and my whole jaw aches as well as the socket.
I was on antibiotics for three days (metronidazole) , I completed the course and followed the aftercare sheet with precision, not vigorous rinsing, then gradually rinsing with salt water, using cosodyl etc but still the pain. I am clock watching until I can take my pain killers and the pain is getting me down. I feel sure she didnt do a proper job of extracting but she doesnt understand English well if I try to explain this and I really don't want more antibiotics as Im going to be taking them whilst trying to enjoy my holiday, I think all I need is some reassurance that this is 'normal' to still feel so sore if not more so than the day after the extraction and if this is the case then I can stop worrying and hope the pain soon subsides.

At the moment I am no use whatsoever to my poor daughter trying to assist with her wedding plans and I havn't even packed my case because all I want to do is lie down with a hot water bottle on my face. 🙁

I went through a similar scenario in 2003, 5 days before I was due to attend a course in Austria. My molar was extracted, plus what felt like most of the contents of my cranium!!! I took the prescribed AB's for 3 days, but was still in pain. I went to Austria, doped up on painkillers, but ended up in a local medical centre having passed out during the first few minutes of the class. The doctor had my jaw xrayed, and they found that infection had spread further into my jaw - the whole right side of my face and neck were swollen. I was put on high dose AB's for a further 10 days, and given pain killing injections twice on that day. The relief was bliss! The pain didn't return.
Go back to your dentist today and insist on treatment and investigation - if necessary, contact your local NHS Emergency Dental Service.

I had a similar experience, I finally went to the emergency NHS dentist because I was in so much pain and the side of my face was swelling up and my dentist couldn't see me for another week. Two of the root sockets were badly infected and my glands were severely swollen...as much as I didn't want to have to take them, high dose antibiotics and strong painkillers and within 2 days I was so much better.
