Hi,
Since I got hit in the back by someone a few years back when i was about 14, i have had problems with my neck.
Main symptoms include: cracking/clicking, as well as a strange popping noise when I turn right with my head (only on turning right)
Also, I can hear the bones rubbing together everytime I move my neck slightly. Does anyone else get this? is it normal?

Thanks for the reply BlackCrow!

The thing is I have seen my doctor about this before and she said its normal and basically nothing to worry about. I tried to argue my case but she seemed sure of herself.
Now I didnt specifically ask for a scan, so if i go back and ask for a scan, what if she still says no?

Thanks

 Bod 8,

you are entitled to a second opinion, ask your gp to send you, if you dont think you are right about how you feel, then you should be sent for a scan.

take care

personally, I'm inclined to agree with the GP on this one. If it's just noises, then it IS normal. Nothing to worry about.

If it hurts, then that's a different matter; but people just get clicky joints, it can happen to any joint at any time, sometimes it just lasts a couple of days, sometimes it lasts a lifetime, it means nothing.

Edit to Blackcrow - what type of scan ar you recommending? I can't think of any that would show anything useful in a case of "clicky joint syndrome". You may get some piece of mind, or you may get -panic because they found some irrelevant schmorl's nodes

The cracking noise itself is simple physics.

The facet joints are small, self contained capsules of liquid; which essentially, provide lubrication, and suspension for the joint.

On movement, these capsules change their shape, which sometimes involves an increase in the volume of the capsule. This change in volume requires that the liquid changes it's volume (which does not happen easily), or it changes it's state (as in solidifies or become gaseous), or any gasses that are disolved in the liquid change state, and become gaseous - this latter is what happens; and is what causes the popping sound; in the same way that opening a fizzy drink, you increase the volume of the system, and the gasses disolved in the liguid become gaseous again, making a noise.

I can happen in any synovial joint, and can start at any time in our life; some people are more prone to it than others; and it can often self-resolve for no known reason (in terms of being a problem, or being audible). In the same way that some kids in a playground can crack their knuckles and some can't - it's exactly the same process, and exactly the same explanation. Nothing to worry about

Did you have an injury before that happened? I think that's normal if you got injured in the past. 😀

You could have trigger points in these neck muscles due to a mva or trauma, the bones in yor body are just bones with out the muscles. The muscles and ligaments are what hold bones together and allow movement so if there are tight muscles it could be causing the cervical vertebre to move. You might consider seeing a chiro and an massage therapist:)

hi,
I had a car accident 11 months ago with which I suffered bad whiplash to my neck & shoulders. I've seen a chiropractor had hydrotherapy & had intense physiotherapy, all to no avail. I've now been referred to an osteopath! My x-ray showed only wear & tear of two neck vertebrae according to the nurse. I will ask for an MRI scan now I have read these comments - thanks everyone, it's comforting to know your not the only one.

Best wishes
Jules

Hi Bod,

I have the same symptoms as you, pretty much all of the time, and they haven't come after any injury. Even after seeing a chiropractor for many years, who gets some wonderful crunches from my neck, I still have these noise. She says it is quite normal, as BIA says, and nothing in particular can improve the situation.

I've also been having Bowen treatment which has certainly helped with mobility and I can turn my neck much further round, but still get the clicks and crunches.

Visit chiro. He I think will solve the problem with misalignment
