Does anyone suffer from this? Lately, when I eat, my jaw clicks and it sounds awful. It can be heard by those around me! Don't know what started it and it doesn't hurt or anything.

Does anyone have a remedy - apart from applying WD40 to my jaw hinges!!

I too had this problem quite some time ago, but just as it arrived on its own it disappeared on its own - if that's any help! 🙂

RE: Clicking Jaw!

Hi All

I have this problem to. It becomes worse when I'm feeling stressed (although I don't think that has anything to do with it). My jaw clicks when i'm eating, yawning etc etc it also becomes painful if I've been talking alot.

I first thought that the pain I was feeling on the bottom right side of my mouth was toothache (this was before my jaw started clicking). After visiting the dentist and having x-rays I was told it was a problem with my jaw. I am waiting to see a specialist (God knows how long it will take), because apparantly they don't offer the treatment I need through Bupa. My dentist says that it's something to do with the ligaments or muscle's in your jaw and that there are different exercises you can do to rectify the problem.

Hope it's rectified soon, it's driving me nuts!!!

Thanks Tex.

That's interesting. Does the fact that you need to see a specialist mean you will have to have some remedial treatment (surgery?) or will you just be given some exercises.

I had to have a back tooth extracted last year and I wonder if I'm subconsciously eating more on the other side and it's caused an imbalance in my jaw.

Hi Sue

I too have a clicking jaw. I went to the dentist about it and he said had I had a recent operation or trauma? Well, I had! I had back surgery and he said this can sometimes happen when you've had major surgery or trauma.

It's very annoying. He gave me a gum shield to wear at night but I must admit, I don't! I keep thinking I should go back, but you sort of ignore it and learn to live with it.

Hi:)

My husband had this problem, dentist said it was the mandibular joint fitted him for a gum sheild to wear at night to force it back into alignment. He hated wearing it as it was uncomfortable but no longer has the problem.

I am sort of wondering if cranio-sacral osteopathy, osteopathy or chiropractic might help to realign anything that's out of balance. Maybe someone from one of those professions will step in and advise further.

Hello all you clicking people, have you thought of getting together and forming your own band, bet it would sound clicktastic.

Sorry chaps, seriously, it is quite common for the jaw to come out of alignment and as "At One" suggests a visit to a cranial osteopath may be the solution.

RE: Clicking Jaw!

well I was trying to think of something witty and funny to say but she beat me to it....

Hey Guess What? I also had it! I almost died in pain one day when I got stuck into a particularly sticky and chewy bagel, everybody was very relieved that I couldnt actually speak for about an hour.[&:] God it was painful.

I actually had an open anterior bite and ended up with braces (at 36)[&:] but people assumed I must be 16.

It stopped happening until yesterday when it gave a big crack.

Osteopathy can help indeedie.:D

RE: Clicking Jaw!

I think forming a band would be a GREAT idea! We could call ourselves the Clickheads and all we need to do now is find some good material we can get our teeth into! (Doh!)

Seriously folks, thanks for some good advice. I think a trip to a cranial osteopath would be good.

Meantime, I need to eat my food in a cave until I get this sorted.

My old boss had a clicking jaw and had found an apparent remedy! She wore a sort of gum shield or plastic retainer type thing at night in bed. Apparently her husband loved it cos it stopped her snoring!!

Thank you for a wonderful forum, I just love it! [sm=1syellow1.gif]

RE: Clicking Jaw!

I've have this problem - in my left side of my jaw. Sometime it locks, and takes a while before it clicks open again. I used to worry about it. But my doctor said I will have to live with it.
Any help would be appreciated as I've no idea what causes it - Ive had it for years now.

I've noticed that if I don't eat for a long period of time or drink (anything to do my moving my mouth) that this will start the problem off. First it starts clicking and then it will lock.
WEIRD.

RE: Clicking Jaw!

I started a thread a while back called - Bruxism & covers TMJ / jaw problems.

Should still be around here somewhere. May that fancy new search facility can find it. Or maybe I can dig it out if need be.

Either way an osteopath should be able to help with most of these. Usually the upper neck, as well as the TM Joints are involved.

The 'click' is the small disk of cartilage in the joint getting caught & then slipping back into place with a 'click' or clunk. The worst one I saw sounded like velcro being torn apart [:@] , but he got better with only a few treatments.

Hi Emma May

Yes, I've tried cod liver oil tablets but it doesn't seem to help much and cod liver oil doesn't really agree with me. Happy to hear of any other suggestions though.

Thanks

RE: Clicking Jaw!

Hi Sue,

My boyfriend had this. It is called something like temporal mandibular disorder or something like that and in his case it was caused by grinding his teeth when he was sleeping. The dentist sorted it out by making him a teeth shield that was moulded to his teeth and he wore it at night. And it went away and never came back. Sorted! Apparantly it is something quite common that dentists deal with all the time.

RE: Clicking Jaw!

Hello folks

This is something a singer just can't live with, so I've followed a number of my colleagues' searches for a solution with interest.

(I agree totally with Anahata re TMJ probs also involving upper neck - he is a very experienced expert and I a dabbler so I won't pretend I can possibly add any value to his post.)

The most remarkable recoveries I've seen have both come from the osteopathic end - cranio-sacral therapy and cranial osteopathy respectively.
However as a clicking jaw can easily arise from a misalignment in the sacral area / pelvic basin or indeed spine I'd suggest that cranio-sacral therapist would give you a wide-ranging survey of potential sources for the problem in any given case. (This at least goes for the Upledger approach which is the one I'm studying.) Then you can decide if you'd prefer treatment by CST or osteopathy. You can get TMJ syndrome from falling on your bum or slipping a disc, sometimes in a very delayed time-scale, so keep the big picture in mind.

If you have a tooth-grinding habit a teeth shield can help with the symptom (I have one) but it's maybe best to get to the root cause for the tooth-grinding behaviour as well.
I'd not recommend moving teeth before you are sure that there is no skeletal/cranial misalignment. You might find, if you have your skeleton fixed subsequently, that you've moved your teeth into a wrong place and that they don't meet! 🙁 I've read several case studies regarding TMJ problems and not one needed braces to correct bite.

That said, a soprano friend of mine is completing a 2-year treatment with a dentist/cranial osteopath/ kinaestherapist guy in Bristol who she says is completely brilliant, and she has needed a brace. If anyone's interested and happy to travel to Bristol, let me know and I'll get his name/number.

Good luck clicky people!

Hi Folks

Thanks so much for some very good advice here. I'm due to see my dentist next month for a check up so will broach the subject with him first and see what he suggests. I'll bear all that is written here in mind when I see him.

Thanks again everyone

Love

RE: Clicking Jaw!

Do see a dentist who can help you with this soon ,okay? There is treatment and such to ease the symtoms. One of them is warm mositure held to the jaws for 15 to 20 minutes or so a few times a day, another is to place the tip of your tongue up on the roof of your mouth to prevent you from locking your jaws tight without realizing it. Also, a mouthguard at night is a good idea, as you're probably clenching your jaws w/o realizing it. I've been through this for nearly 15 years and when I didn't getl help, I lost three major molars because of it - it can turn into a real nightmare!

sorry, but I really want to urge anyone dealing with this to get help as soon as possible to avoid the problems I have - and still am dealing with today.

RE: Clicking Jaw!

Hi Mark

I was diagnosed with this condition too. Although mine isn't terribly painful (only sometimes) I only take a painkiller when I need it. I do take evening primrose oil though and have been for a while now (generally for my health) and I think it is helping. Cod liver oil is also thought to be good for joints (if you can bear the taste[:'(]) I also do self Reiki on my face and I'm sure that is giving me some relief - it certainly feels better after a short session.

It might be worth your wife going to homeopath to see if they can prescribe something - especially for the long term. I wouldn't like to take Ibru for that length of time.

RE: Clicking Jaw!

hmmm, I have a funny jaw, which only occasionally clicks, but has on a few occasions has dislocated (at precisely the wrong moment!) and has caused me much discomfort, not to mention embarrassment...

I am now too scared to open my mouth wide enough to eat an apple, let alone go to the dentist. Anyone else with this problem?
