Hi
It seems that my foot infection is a form of cellulitis called Erysipelas (?). Have any of you ever had it?
I haven't been able to walk since Monday and have had sickness and diarrhoea and fever as well as swollen lymph glands in my leg and groin.
My foot is now a nice vivid purple colour. I was wondering if this is normal? [&:]
When the emergency doctor came on Monday night he said I should take 4 oral antibiotics a day for 7-10 days, followed by 2 months of antibiotic cream. Because the antibiotics he gave me (he only gave me 1 days worth) made me sick I got some from my GP called Ciproflaxin but he only gave me 10 tablets which run out today. He also gave me some Elocon Ointment.
I'm a bit concerned because when the antibiotics have worn off overnight I start to feel really sick again and all the web sites I have looked at say you should take at least 7 days of antibiotics.
Although my foot is still very swollen and ugly I can put a little bit of weight on it and take a few steps before the pain gets too bad.
I can't decide whether to get a second opinion.....

RE: Cellulitis?
Hi sweetheart,
I dont know much, but I do know that cellulitus is a general term for swollen cells.[X(]
If any part of my body was purple, and would definatly get a second oppinion, purple is definalty not your foots colour:)
Get better, keep up those spirits, I f I were you I would paint my toenails to match:D
OOOO theres that wicked sense of houmor again, how did that get out of its cupboard[sm=newangel.gif]
RE: Cellulitis?
Hi ,
Cellulitis is a bacterial infection - NOT to be confused with 'swollen cells'
or cellulite - sometimes found on hips and thighs - mainly on womem.
(any condition that has an 'itis' - is an inflamation )
Cellulitis can be extremely painful and antibiotics are the usual treatment.
If they did not work you may need a second opinion and/or different type of antibiotics.
At the same time you could take large doses of vit. C, garlic and lots of water.
Take care,
A
RE: Cellulitis?
Thanks Andre - I have been taking garlic and vitamin C for the last couple of days, so I'm pleased that's the right thing to do.
Hi Donna - good idea about the toenails, what colour do you think won't clash with purply/pink? [:o] <- this is about the colour.

RE: Cellulitis?
Hi sweetheart,
I was thinking a nice pearly pink to compilment the purple hues[sm=rollaugh.gif]
Now seriously I am not making light of your pain, I just know how useful laughter is, and I definatly think we share that off the wall sense of humor;)
Stay smiling
RE: Cellulitis?
Hiya
I have two clients with cellulitis at the moment and both are improving....firstly do gentle massage to the foot/leg to encourage the lymph to drain (cellulitis is compounded by odema and being overweight) also because it is an infection this means it can be spread so the best thing you can do is everytime you have a cut or scratch or wound on your leg and this includes the soft raised skin blister like areas which can sometimes leak a clear fluid (lymph) anyway wash the area and put antiseptic on it to stop it spreading. it is quite common for people with cellulitis to go from red to bright purple. A course of antibiotics is the only way to go but dont be surprised if you need a longer course.....one of mine is on a 28 day course.
when you have gently massaged the area (at least upto the knee) then be gently mobile for about 20mins after to encourage the drainage and then lye with your feet up above hips......
hope that helps any questions feel free to pm me.....
Hugs

RE: Cellulitis?
Thanks Tigerbee, I've been trying to walk on it a bit today, but it doesn't half smart! I've put a bit of evening primrose/lavender oil around the edges to try to take some of the heat out of it. I don't actually have an open wound but I did have an area of eczema on the top of my foot which must have become infected. I'm a bit concerned that I was only given a five day course of anti-biotics when the emergency doc told me I need 7-10 days worth. I don't want this back in a hurry! [:@]
Don't worry Donna - I do appreciate your sense of humour and agree that sometimes if you didn't laugh, you'd cry! 🙁

P.S. I'm not in the least bit overweight and I don't suffer from oedema either, even if I do have an elephant foot at the moment!!!
RE: Cellulitis?
Hiya
Sorry I hope you didnt think i was implying its just they often come together and your foot has probably got odema at the mo??? If the foot is still painful, swollen or very deep in colour and hot then yes i would go back and get some antib's.....
Hugs to you and hope you are walking well soon

RE: Cellulitis?
I get Cellulitis regularly. I think I've had it about 7 times and have been hospitalised once. It is horrible. You have no doubt been given strong antibiotics which should be reducing the infection line that goes up your main artery. The redness will begin to go down once this is gone and you'll begin to get over the sickness and achey feeling too once the antibiotics start to work. Take painkillers as well for the agony of when you have to put your foot to the floor.
When ever I get Cellulitis the last thing I could stand is firstly anyone touching it and secondly essential oils sent me throught the roof. If the infection isn't going you may need more anitibiotic the first time I had it I was on them for 4 months (Amoxycilin, Flucloxiciyn and Penecillin).
It is a truly horrible thing and apparantley fairly easy to get if you're that way inclined.
Hope you feel better soon, please let me know or email me if you want to know anything else
Cath
RE: Cellulitis?
Hi Cath
I'm really sorry to hear that you get cellulitis regularly - it's truly horrible.
The swelling in my foot seems to have gone down a lot today and (touch wood) the purple colour seems to be fading. The sickness has also stopped. Do you ever get lower back pain with it as I've had a kind of colitis pain since it started which still hasn't gone?
As I've run out of anti-biotics I'm depending on garlic capsules, grapefruit seed extract and vitamin C (and the lovely healing Reiki sent by my HP friends ;)).
My father-in-law said he had cellulitis when he was a teenager and his arm wasn't fully useable for 7 months, so I guess I'm lucky.
Did you take probiotics after all those antibiotics?
Sweetheart x
RE: Cellulitis?
Probiotics are an absolute must afer a course of antibiotics IMO, my body really benifits when I am senseable, and give it "friendly bacteria":D
RE: Cellulitis?
Hello Sweetheart, sorry to hear that you're well and truly in the wars. I'm sending more reiki to you.
Love 'n' hugs,
RE: Cellulitis?
Hi, Sw.
I should NOT take this lightly. My wife has had four bouts of cellulitis in four consecutive summers. Left unchecked it could have resulted in her loosing her leg at the very least.
As you know the lymphatic system carries the lympth fluid from the lympth nodes to every single cell in the body and is the way nutrients and chemicals get to the cells,, there is no direct blood/ cell contact. To enable this, the lymphatic system does not have the immunity system of the blood circulatory system and so is a wide open free highway for any virus or bacteria that gets in there. Hence the danger of cancer cell spread via the lymphatic system.
My wife was stung on the ankle by a bee and that was enough to send her into a raging temperature and her ankle swollen and purple, in an hour. I was able to get the ambulance down to the tow path and she was on a drip within the hour. She stayed on a broad spectrum antibiotic drip for a week, before the swelling stopped spreading up her leg. The swelling of the cells permanently weakens them and the invasion of the lymphatic system by virus or bacteria, makes it permanently weakened.
As a result she has to keep a bottle of high strength antibiotics with her at all times and never allow her feet or toes to get dry or split. Even so she has had more attacks. Luckily we know what signs to look for nd have got her on a drip feed within the hour... Tablets are not enough..
I don't want to scare you,, but take care.
Leo
RE: Cellulitis?
Do you know, for so long I thought I was on my own with this... When ever anyone asked they thought it was Cellulite..Not Cellulitis. I too now know the signs of when it's coming on the searing painfull headache, the strange feeling in my leg then the temperature, vomiting and pain. some people take a small amount of antibiotic all the time. I don't and wouldn't like to. Yes I took lots of Lactobacillis to counter act the effects of the antibiotics but the first time I had it still managed to get Thrush in every orifice (sorry) I was like a dog with my tongue stuck out! Homeopothy helped with this.
I found the lymphodema site very useful.. Last summer we went to Italy and the mosquitos were awful so I slept evernight with my right leg under the covers. You guessed it got bit in the left leg and got it again. thankfully it wasn't as bad and I seemed to get over it very quickly.
It seems that once you've had Cellulitis you become prone to it. Someone I spoke to last year said that her husband was having the Metamorphic Technique to help with Cellulitis. I don't know about that as this is infection that affects the subcutaneous layer of the skin. Perhaps Metamorphic Technique raises your immunity, I don't know.
At least we now have our own little self help group..
Best wishes to all
Cath
RE: Cellulitis?
Thanks everyone 😀
Leo, my doctor made me feel a bit of a fusspot when I asked about the length of the dose, and instead of giving me the antibiotic cream that the emergency doctor recommended he gave me a steroid one.
I actually ventured out in the car today and although my foot was OK I still felt a bit wobbly. If I start to feel nauseous and my temperature goes up any more then I will contact the surgery and ask for more antiobiotics. I don't think I am actually allergic to penicillin - I think I would have thrown up anything I tried to swallow for the first day or so.
I will go and take some more garlic and grapefruit seed extract as an extra precaution!

RE: Cellulitis?
Hiya sweetheart,
To diversify from your cellulitis, for a change;)
I am allergic to penacillin, my reaction happened five days after the last antibiotic, it presented as an angrey red, symetrical, itchy rash, and told this was like a warning form my body, and another reaction could be worse[&o].
I am not trying to alarm you, I just wanted to let you know what happened when I had a reaction to penicillin, and I know we all react to thing differently, but at least if you experience those symptoms it might give you a clue as to what is happening:)
RE: Cellulitis?
Thankyou for that Donna x 😀
RE: Cellulitis?
How's the foot. Is it better now.
Hope so.

RE: Cellulitis?
Hi Jan 😀
It's still a bit purple and there is a big lump where the infection started [&:] but it's an awful lot better thanks.
Sweetheart x
RE: Cellulitis?
Pleased you are much better now. You seem to have had a stressful time lately. Hope your M i L is better too.
I saw you mentioned stevia as a sugar replacement. I looked in Sainsbury's but couldn't see any. Where do you get it please.
lol
Jan
RE: Cellulitis?
Hi Jan
I'm not sure actually sure where you get Stevia in this country. I know that Amazon Rainforest Herbs do a Stevia product (available via Jamie Mason's website - HP Name Neo1 I think).
I will have a look and see if Holland and Barratt do it.

RE: Cellulitis?
I used to get it from Mother's Nature, but they went out of business. It is marvellous stuff. I asked at my local H&B and they had never heard of it, but, the herbalists around might have some.
It lasted for ages, and was so pure.
