I've a client in a lot of pain with this at the mo. int the hip and buttock and going down leg. worse on left side.

Rheumatologist keeps upping and altering steroids. But not helping now. Could he be missing some other condition.

Acupressure and acupuncture help a bit but they have a numb ankle now.

Any ideas or advice welcome.

Steroids is the usual approach & usually takes up to a year to burn it's self out.

They're limited to what supplements they can take because of possible interactions with drugs.

A strong antioxidant formula is good for inflammation - the main problem & unlike to interact.

Homeopathy & Bach Flower Remedies shouldn't interact in anyway.

And Massage, with or without Aromatherapy.

They must keep moving & do stretches to stop the inflammation building up & to maintain mobility.

I had to ask Andrew what this was when one of my clients said she had it. She is coming once a month for massage and is getting huge relief from the pain. Massage should definately help.:D

My mum has PMR and I have been trying to interest her in getting a massage, so I may mention it again. Thanks very much for bringing this up Iceni. In mum's case it shows no sign of going away alas.

Massage can work a treat, but a lot does depend on the individual....with some it can make them feel very uncomfortable but with others it really seems to suit.....I always do very gentle NMT on the first session to see how they react during and then after the treatment....

I have a client with this (except that she said it's also called polymyelitis??) and reflexology seems to be helping a lot so far. (has had 3 weekly treatments) Reflex may be gentler than massage if the muscles are too tender.

RE: Polymyalgia rheumatica advice please.

Thanks for the help folks.

She went to the rheumatologist on Friday and her ESR was normal and the steroids aren't helping at all now. She has had it for over 4 years now so Rheuma' think it may have burnt itself out and she is getting Fibromyalgia. (she has all the hot spots).

Hopefully she may now reduce the steroids as they're not working.

I will try to increase her treatments but its been hard to fit them in.

Will definitely suggest the oils and massage for her.

Siobhan, Does your Mum also get frequent 'sweats'. She is often really dripping and cant bear the heat. Poor thing is 83 so well past menopause.

Or other clients experience this.

Thanks again

It's interesting that you mention the sweats. My client also has these and she is about 72. She always makes comments about hot flushes and she does pespire a lot. I wonder if it is connected?

Hi Candie

I really wonder if some of these conditions are linked to underlying metabolic disorders. Hypothyroid causes pains in some people and can be linked to the adrenals which may make them sweat. The 'normal' range is so wide, whats good for one may not be for another. The body is so complicated.

Still with reflexology we treat the whole body so hopefully cover all possibilities.

I am 45 & recently diagnosed with prm. I am on steroids, (although terrible side effects, at least alow me to get out of bed) but have found that deep tissue massage and going to the gym for 1 hr. / day for mild to moderate excercise not only makes me feel better physically, but mentally as well (which some days thedepression is worse than the physical pain of PMR). This horrible disease hit me so fast, I didn't even see it coming.

Hi All
I was diagnosed PMR last June/July. The symptoms appeared after I had a head on crash in the car but no one seems to think it's connected especially the insurance company. I have a friend with this and she knows a few more, all women in their late 50's early 60's and ALL (6 or 7 inc. me) have had their symptoms within a year of stopping HRT treatment. Again I don't know that this is connected or just coincidence. My doctor has just referred me to the Homeopathic Hospital after much nagging by me so will let you all know how I get on. I am currently on 12 and half mg Prednisone per day, coming down 2 and half weekly from 30mg per day over last 7 weeks but have been up and down with the dose for more than 6 mth. I now have side effects - deposits around the neck, in my cheeks and a lump like a hump is starting to appear at the back of my neck, but no pain, I also have some facial hair which I successfully pluck out.

By the way Polymsitis (I think that's how you spell it) is more severe than PMR from what I have read. It effects the mussles in the throat, chest and eventually the heart.

Because of what i have read here I will be getting more excersise and some massages. Thanks
