Anyone else used pure Turpentine oil to help IBS? A friend of mine in Spain swears by it and does a teaspoon of sugar with a few drops of Turps every 6 months and says it really sorts him out? I have never heard of this before and would love to know more from someone who has used it.

Terpentine oil is not normally taken internally.....but I guess at that dose it isn't going to do any harm. I am personally sceptical that any effect it is having could last 6 months. Is it that he only gets problems with IBS every 6 months?? I suspect there are safer ways to treat IBS - the idea of turpentine oil taken internally is not a nice one . But I have seen stranger things work......

Hi Sally,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I was a bit sceptical myself but he really swears by it!! I think he just treats the IBS when it gets really bad. Personally I am the kind of person who likes to find out what is causing problems but it just seems a little overwhelming at times. I have a feeling IBS could be down to food allergies but with so many different ways to test for them I am really not sure which route to take..kinesiology etc.

Not forgetting of course that much of what is available to buy now is a turpentine substitute, rather than the real thing, so I would suggest that it's really not advisable to be consuming any chemicals that are not intended for consumption, especially when you don't really know what they are.

For IBS I would recommend reading the book "Irritable Bowel Solutions" which helps sufferers to classify which type of IBS they have and offers proven suggestions to help reduce or eliminate the causes.

I agree. There are plenty of ways to deal with IBS apart from consuming potemntially toxic chemicals!

Never heard of using turps for IBS but in pre NHS days people used it as a chest rub for bronchial problems. Also I think it was an old folk remedy for internal parasites. Not sure I'd want to test it though!
