Hello, I am a 22 year old male,
About a month ago, me and my family caught a bad stomach bug (sickness and Diarrhea) about a week later everyone was better, but for some reason i did not feel right, my stomach was bloating all the time, and after eating, i felt even more bloated, i went to the Doctors and they said constipation, so i tried some laxitive, i started to go the the toilet normally, but i was still getting a bloating feeling and my stomach would inflate a bit, i went back and the doctor gave me lansoprazole, they worked a tiny bit, but then stopped, i was still getting a weird feeling after eating. Then last week, i has some chips, and my stomach got thousands times worse, i was having bad pains and felt the need to throw up, and diarrhea started, i went to my doctor again to tell him the tablets have done nothing, but he said stick to them and he gave me more. I decided to go to the Hospital, as i wanted answers, the doctor i saw there said it is an "after effect" of the original stomach flu me and my family had, and my stomach needed to heal, he told me to stick to the tablets for 6 weeks.
Could that really be the problem? or is it something more?
Hi Graeme and welcome to Healthypages,
Stomach problems can always be a bit hit and miss with the doctors because it's one of those areas where things can happen but they don't have a clue what it is. Often they just call it Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and say there's not much they can do except give you tablets to alleviate the pains etc. Some such problems can start after having stomache bugs or whatever, but can also appear for no apparent reason (perhaps more to do with stress, anxiety or emotional issues).
Only medically qualified persons could offer any diagnosis or prognosis, so that pretty much excludes everyone here, however people here can certainly offer support and ideas that you could take to your doctor to help investigate or figure out what it is.
It may be an idea to be clear about where the issue seems to be. From what you describe it's not quite clear... is it in the stomach (the first port of call for your food when you swallow it, and the bit that produces the acid that gives heartburn and from where you can be sick) or is it lower down in the bowel/intestines? (I ask because often people talk about their 'stomach' when their talking about their lower tummy area which is really where their bowels are rather than the stomach).
What I do know is that Lanzaprasole is designed to help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach, which is often prescribed when people have excess acid, acid reflux, heartburn or a stomach ulcer (felt as pains in the chest and easily confused with heart attack - but always get it checked out if you have pains in the chest), and it won't really do much to treat lower bowel issues. It's not a medication that works instantaneously like taking over the counter heartburn tablets, and it's certainly something that takes some time to come to full effect.
Also, when talking to your doctor, it's a good idea to try and get terminology correct so that you're both on the same hymn sheet so to speak. When you say you had diarrhoea, did you really mean loose stools? Diarrhoea as doctors understand it actually means the need to go to the loo to pass stools three or more times in a day, and chronic diarrhoea means the condition is ongoing daily. Hopefully your doctor is aware enough to know that many people call loose stools 'diarrhoea' when they shouldn't be, but sometimes confusion can be caused by them understanding your problem differently to how you do.
Aside from all that medical gumph, if you've had an upset stomach, especially if it's been caused by a flu like bug, it's often a good idea to eat a more simple and clean diet for a while (possibly a couple of weeks if it was really bad, and stick with it for a while after you feel better). Eating greasy or fatty foods won't help the stomach or bowel to heal well.
Hope things work out ok for you.
😉
Hi - have you tried eating plain live yoghurt? I used to get 'IBS' (if that's what is was) and also had a bout of gastroenteritis. Live yoghurt, rice, banana - all of these foods helped and were soothing but the yoghurt in particular helps.

How long can gastroenteritis because its been almost 2 months now 🙁

Hi - I had gastroenteritis for about a week and then some symptoms persisted for a bit longer after that but certainly not for 2 months. Main thing is to see your doctor if you are worried but really, I would try eating a bland diet, including live yoghurt, and just looking after yourself for a while. Peppermint or chamomile tea can also be soothing with tummy problems and worry makes everything worse!
I got really ill before with some kind of bug then took lots of pills (I was in se asia and didn't know what was wrong so kept taking various antibiotics, worming pills etc) Bad idea! This triggered off what they called IBS for a looong time.
Just try to eat healthy food (fatty foods can make it much worse) and give it till when the doctor says and see from then.
My IBS has taken years to get better (but don't worry I'm sure yours wont) but it is almost better and now just mainly helps me to remember to eat good healthy balanced meals and not too much sugar or fat.
However if you still don't feel better when you've finished the pills you can always get some tests. I was convinced there was something more wrong with me till I got the tests, docs said I just needed time to heal and they were more or less correct as tests were clear.
Hope that helps, I know how horrible it is to have a bad stomach!
by the way ginger tea is excellent for calming the stomach, try a bit out first to see if it works for you though

Hi graeme,
I've had that bloating feeling after the stomach flu/diarrhea....it can take a long time for the intestines and its friendly bacteria to get back on course. I hope you're feeling better soon. Yogurt and probiotics as mentioned by others is one of your best choices. Myrrh gum is very good too for reducing bloating. Also eating small but frequent meals may help and taking a multi B vitamin or even B6 alone could help reduce bloating.
Some common spices can relieve indigestion too, such as allspice, rosemary, dill and basil. Another good one that just came to mind is aloe vera, and fennel, ginger, nettles 🙂 Herbe can stimulate the liver and improve digestion, such as agrimony, dandelion, barberry, wild yam and thistle. There are so many others too, just can't think of them all right now.
When our intestines are in this sensitive state, certain food combinations aren't compatible with each other and can cause bloating, especially some fruit combinations (alkaline) with meat and starches (acidic). The reason is simply that different foods require different gastric juices to break them down...this can cause an unease in the intestional area..and there are some fruit sugars that our body has a hard time breaking down...this causes a lot of gas and bloating.
Hope your feeling better soon 🙂
try drinking peppermint tea regularly as this aids digestion. massaging your stomach in a cirular clockwise motion can help too as this gets your intestines working.
Wow great tip about the massaging clockwise AngelButterfly! Before I've sometimes relied on meds (motilium) when I feel blocked up but now I will try this, thanks!

Is ginger tea also good for hyperacidity? But regarding with bowel movement, I always prefer to have green tea.
If you really want to allow your stomach to heal, avoid all sugars, fatty foods and even all grains. You'll be surprised how better you will be in just a week of this regimen.
Also, I have a list of natural home remedies for bloating, which are really effective. You can see them here and I hope this helps:

Problem with stomach
hello everybody,
i am 23 year old girl.I facing the problem of stomach bloating after eating.can anyone give me any proper solution
I've just ordered some lectin defense from True Health in USA to see if it helps.
I think you got salmonella symptoms from what you have eaten. Salmonellosis, or salmonella infection, is caused by salmonella bacteria that exist in some kinds of food we eat everyday. The most popular are beef, meat, poultry, milk, eggs and dairy products. Try drinking yogurt or tea
My suggestion to you was I used this one and its really work! amazing just 3 weeks I got a healthy body!
