Has anyone had a probiotic with added citrus pectin - if so how did you find it? I was sort of cajoled into buying one with pectin in but I'm not too sure - the assistant said pectin was so much better to help reduce bloating than a probiotic without it added. Is it safe to take also?

Any help is appreciated.

I recently saw a consumer programme where, upon research, it was found that there is a lack of proven evidence that probiotic yogurts are effective in their health claims.

Also, the results of a research conducted in 2012, showed that there is little evidence to support the health claims of propbiotic supplements. I am accordingly changing my supplements.

In answer to your question Janet, pectin is a natural substance found in most fruits. It's what vegetarians and vegans look for in food as a relplacement for gelatin(e) which is often from beef or pork. Pectin is what makes fruit jams turn to jam when they're boiled.

It's perfectly safe to consume.. if it wasn't we'd all have to stop eating fruit.

As for claims of it making probiotics work better, I cannot comment as I don't know. I'm not familiar with the research Amy's talking about, though there is certainly evidence that things like antibiotics will reduce the 'good' bacteria in the gut, and probiotics (those that make it past the stomach acid first) do help to replace those 'good' bacteria, though often the recommendation is to use 'pre'biotics alongside them.

Hi Janet - you often come here to ask questions about supplements you have bought to try and alleviate bloating and other gut related problems - perhaps it would have been better to save the money and put it towards investing in counselling and advice from a qualified nutritional therapist.

I would never take advice from a health shop assistant - they don't know anything about me, they simply have products to sell.

I do think probiotics help to an extent - it's finding the right one - I did find the right one then it was changed and it's replacement doesn't work for me.
