I have struggled with GI issues my entire life and have found very little to help ease the issues. My one saving grace is magnesium, which I take 2 times daily, aside from that I am unable to eat very few foods, including sweet potatoes, pasta, chocolate....the list goes on. I have changed my diet multiple times, tried paleo and am now a strict vegan and have been for 7 months, but I am still having the issues with bloating so I decided to try probiotics. The first 3 days I noticed that the fungal rash that has plagued me for years was becoming very prominent, I did some research and learned that this may be the probiotics trying to get rid of all the bad bacteria, so I continued to take them, and was thrilled that I may finally be free of the fungal rash that no meds or creams or shampoos have been able to cure. The rash is now much better and appears to be clearing but now I am experiencing severe heart burn, bloating and water retention. I don't know what to do. I am so sick of fighting with my body.

Body and mind are one. So it is catch 22. Whilst you are invested immensely in doing the right thing to help yourself, that same investment is blocking your health to blossom. Too much in your own way...
Law of reverse action, if you like.
Relax. Stop taking account of what to eat, what not to.

More you stop keeping account, more your body gets a chance to find its balance. One must trust the marvellous machine, the body is, which will turn most things around if you give it some space to do so.

She( your body) knows. She is full of intelligence, she is self healing. Just stop sitting in her way.
Trust her.
...and secondly put that cerebral and psychological energy in some area of your life that is working relatively more smoothly. Say if you seldom have headaches...focus there rather than GI issues.
Your focus here is part of the problem, not solution

Hmmm thanks for the feed back, although I don't believe that I focus on my GI issues or stress about it. I simply found this wonderful forum and thought I could speak about my concerns with taking probiotics. I'm a 38 year old mother and full time nurse, I also look after my husband who has progressive MS, there is no time to focus on my GI concerns....simply asking about probiotics.

two tsp apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before or after meals is excellent for heart burn.
For a general healthier gut, Triphala first thing in the morning with warm water can help and it is a great general detox. Taste bitter, but hey...!

Google and do research to see if it is something that you would like to try.
Kafir is known to have benign bacteria for the gut.
Hope it all works out for you Melissa.

Hello

As someone who has a very sensitive digestive system, I completely understand your situation.

Some of these probiotics, particularly the yoghurt drink type, are laden with sugar and you may have a sensitivity to sugar. If you want to continue down the probiotic avenue, try get a really good quality one from your health food shop.

It sounds as though you’re reacting to what you are eating and this can be a devil of a job to find out what’s causing it. Have you tried ruling out gluten for a couple of weeks. A gluten sensitivity can cause bloating and general discomfort in the way you describe.

Try going gluten free for two weeks and see if things improve. Be very careful when choosing gluten free food though, rather than going for gluten free substitutes try to stick with foods that are naturally gluten free i.e such as baked potatoes, veg and fruit, wheat free museli etc. You’re essentially trying to establish whether you are gluten sensitive. You will need to check the labels of the foods you’re buying as gluten can be in wheat, rye and barley, so any foods containing that will naturally include gluten.

If all is well with gluten / wheat, next look to dairy. You could be sensitive to cow’s dairy products, so you could substitute cow’s with Goat’s milk (which is easier on the digestive system) or there are plenty of nut milks available. Also substitute cow’s yoghurt (if you eat it) with non cow’s (again there is goat’s yoghurt or others) and substitute cheese; again for a couple of weeks to see if there is any improvement. You will need to be really strict on these two week periods and not let any gluten / dairy slip into your diet.

Things I find soothing for the digestion are Marshmallow Root powder, liquorice I find is brilliant for bloating after a meal. You might also want to try Slippery Elm which is a drink. Like you, I find magnesium very helpful. I’ve also had digestive enzymes from time to time. Currently, I’m having aloe vera juice daily which is a good cleanser and particularly good for the digestion.

I would also recommend keeping a daily food diary and see if you can detect a pattern emerging of particular foods and upsets.

Best wishes,
