Hi I am new to this forum - for years I have been suffering in silence. Sat here at work I thought I would google "Can't Burp" and found this thread. I am so glad I did.
I have had these problems for years. I cannot drink fizzy drinks as it makes me worse, I can't eat red peppers as it does the same. I have tried all sorts of over the counter remedies and nothing has worked. I have assumed that I have acute Asthma; but maybe I am wrong.
Ever since I was a child I could never burp, have always had stomach pains; or growing pains as my mum used to call them. I have had numerous amounts of time off work; due to pains.
I have resorted to fingers down the throat in the past where a load of siliva has come up and I have managed to belch (ewwww) I know have pains under my left breast and rib cage which I only assume is build up of gas, it comes and goes and is not there all of the time so not overly worried.
The chrunch came last month I had my tea and that was it I could not breathe....tried everything inhaler etc. Hubby ended up getting the ambulance out they gave me some oxygen and I was OK I settled. Went for a check up at Dr's and she could not say whether it was an asthma attack, but gave me another preventer inhaler. To be honest I think it was anxiety as I could not burp! I tried to explain this but she looked at me as if I were mad.
Sometimes if I have had peas for tea two days later I can make myself burp and regergate a couple of peas (minging I know) but don't know why it happens.
I have just come to terms that this is me and this is the problem I have. Hubby thinks I am weird cos I can't burp. At least now I know I am not alone.
Any helpful suggestions on things to try would be appreciated.:D
Hi Goldcoast
I have replied in post no 82 below. Please have a look. Try out my suggestions and let us know how you get on!
Failing that, you may need to chew your food better, drink some liquid with meals to help create a more fluid content for the stomach enzymes to work in. It may also be a shortage of digestive enzymes (caused by lack of zinc, stress, etc) and it may be worth trying those.
The stomach should be emptied within four hours of eating a meal, and if it isn't then there is something holding it up - the most common thing being that the food is not being digested properly and it is waiting for that to happen, meanwhile there is a build-up of gas from any digested carbohydrate - which breaks down to form carbon dioxide among other things.
Hope that helps!
Hello, I too have only registered to share my experience with this problem. It's actually my son who can't burp. He's 11. As a baby he was fine, he would bring up wind, but he was never sick, not a sicky baby at all. We used to think it was funny he couldn't burp and the rest of us could - he has a sister two years younger. But for just over two years he has suffered with bad tummy pains, particularly at lunch time when he's at school eating, he either couldn't eat anything or only a little. He also says it helps if he lays down. It's hard being at school when he suffers and as a result he has missed a lot of school. Just lately the pains have been late at night and then first thing in the morning - particularly bad. I feel helpless and hate to see him like this, I don't know what to do to help him. Our doctor is pretty useless, he thought it could be IBS, and he sent him to hospital for some blood tests which came back normal. These were to test for food intolerances - wheat/gluten, etc. The consultant said to put him on a dairy-free diet for 6 weeks, which we are currently about 3 weeks into. Haven't noticed an awful lot of difference with that. I am keeping a diary of how he is from day to day, some days he has diarrea (can't spell it!) then the next day he finds he is constipated which does make you wonder if it's IBS, but I'm sure that the fact he can't burp is a major factor causing his tummy pain. I was so glad to find this site as I felt very isolated worrying about my son. I spent an hour and-a-half reading all the threads yesterday when I found it! So I was determined to post my thread and hopefully it will keep going. I was amazed to find it had started in 2005 and is still going today.

Thanks Caroline - anything is worth a try, so will give it a go.....I will keep everyone posted!
Gosh, 5 years since Big Kev posted his problem, I can't even see if he got a satisfactory answer! But if not, he might still be happy to get another view!
I'd say this relates to thoracic mechanics - distortions in the diaphragm can affect the function of the hiatus sphincter (not really a sphincter but a hole in the diaphragm which constricts the oesophagus at the lower end).
The other factor is the neurology of the diaphragm and oesophagus, which involves the phrenic nerve and the vagus nerve, and is affected reflexively from the neck. And of course the global context of the problem.
In short it sounds like a variation of the same problem that causes hiatus hernia. To treat this I'd have to get my hands on you I'm afraid. I know it's been a long time, but if you're still suffering Big Kev, wherever you are, let me know and I'll be happy to help.
OK - after searching on the net for relief of not being able to burp etc. I have diagnosed myself as having Laryngopharyngeal Reflux or AKA "LPR" the symptoms include:
Symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux are:
- Continual throat clearing
- Chronic throat irritation
- Chronic cough
- Hoarseness
- Excessive phlegm the throat
- Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
- Constant sensation of something in the throat
- Swallowed food comes back up
- Post nasal drainage
- Weak voice
- Cracking voice
- Blockage of the breathing passage
- Spasm of the larynx (voice box)
- Wheezing
- Heartburn
Which I do get. So on this basis I googled natural relief from this, and hey presto found that if you take two teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in either Water (add some Honey as quite bitter) or take with Apple Juice twice a day, it will relieve symptoms. I take first thing in the morning and half hour before my evening meal. I have been taking for a week and symptoms have started to decline and I have shown some improvement, also it makes me burp, however this can happen in mid sentence 😮 ooPs (better out than in though!!)
It is worth a try for anyone that is suffering. I believe you have to be taking it for at least 4 weeks for it to show any signs, but touch wood it seems to be working for me and it is natural. I will say it does make me thirsty so you do need to keep up on intake of water 🙂
Greetings, I found this forum and website through googling "cant burp" and I am so glad I did google! I am so happy to find others who like me, cant burp!
I am 49 years old and have never been able to burp even as a baby. I have lost count of the times I have vomitted, had to stick my fingers down my throat to burp and been awake with severe gas, like right now. Laying on my side makes it worse, I have tried every known natural remedy without any success and have to take Nexium 40gm to relieve the severe heart burn I suffer. The Nexium works on the heart burn and to some extent has stopped the reflux.
It has now gotten to the stage where I am going to make my Dr listen to me and investigate all of my symptoms. Especially now I know I am definately not the only one who has this problem. I am so sick of the nausea, bloating and pain.
another one
Hi
I have the exact same problem with the 'gurgling' as you guys, and had the following treatments done:
1)medication: Baclofen (a strong muscle relaxant): did not work (even when taking a very high dosage);
2) Remergon & doctrazodone (anti depressants): did not work
3) Recently: a cardiac sphincter (UES) dilatation: did not work (actually, it even made it a bit worse);
the only thing thas does help for me is simply sticking my fingers in my throat and 'vomit' all the air out. But in the long run, this just CANNOT be healthy...
I've noticed that anxiety definitely makes it worse.. so now i'm gonna work on that (maybe Yoga or something). But i don' have much hope for the moment that this will provide a solution..we'll see.
Can't burp - stick neck..
Don't be stupid!!!!! Nobody is born with this disability ot lost the ability. Don;t lie in the forum. God created us to burp.. Are you here to create attention and violate god's creation.. ok, i read this forum last week sometime..and i thought it was so odd so many people had the same problem i have. I can't drink soda or anything fizzy or if i eat too fast it will happen..my throat will gurgle and i can't burp ever..it's annoying and sometimes uncomfortable..well i know the only way to get it out is to pass gas or to gag yourself and i actually found a new way to make it easier instead of putting your finger down your throat. You go to gag and arch your shoulders as far back as possible at the same time you are gagging and stick your neck outward...it comes right out.. This sucks and i hope one day they will find a cure..
Can burp!!!

Ive experienced the same thying for about 8 months or so, since last july, my mum thought it was due to stress of my exam results due in august, but its march now and they're still here :(.
Sometimes they make me feel really sick but other times they come and go within 5 minutes, so id have to say i dont have them a serious as some of u others who have replied. (i feel for ya).
Theres only been one case where it has really got me down, the night before my exam results they took over my life! I think its because i had everything happening at once! I was stressed, nervous, was the wrong time of the month, had too see some people i really didnt want to see and my best mate wasnt well so i had everythin hit me all in one so yes i experienced these dreaded dry heaves!
I had them really bad yesturday but they went as soon as i went to bed (which was lucky some nights they dont) but i have to ask, does any1 find they go worse when smoking? If any of you smoke> just something ive noticed.
Anyway if any1 finds out what this is actually known as let me know so i can tell my mates instead of them laughin at me lol
who says cannot BURP~~

Finally!
I am 25 years old and have had all the same problems with not being able to burp my whole life and having stomach problems because of it. I have actually learned to burp. It's strange and amazing. I suspect there to be something physically similar that all of us have in common that kept it from being a natural reaction, but at least with me... over the last 4 months or so, I've gotten to the point where I can actually burp when I need to most of the time. I still can't belch on command or burp the ABCs, but when I feel the need to burp, I can do certain things with my chest, shoulders, neck, jaw, and throat to make a burp happen (sounds more complicated than it actually is once I got the hang of it). Sometimes they're small and sometimes they are big. It did not completely fix my stomache problems, but it is better and i can now better understand which foods upset my stomach, and I can explain it in no other way than to say that it is absolutely glorious. I'm interested to see if I can help anyone else learn how to do this. I hope your search turns out as well as mine did.
I'm 29 and have actually just started learning to burp as well! I believe it's just like any other skill you can learn. I thought of it just like a training program. It seemed like an impossibility to actually burp when I first started to try. As soon as the gurgling sound came up from my throat I tried relaxing my whole body, releasing as much air from my mouth at the same time and moving my head quickly forward slightly. You almost try to make your body go limp. Looks a bit weird. Sometimes sitting down makes it easier. For the first week or two this did nothing but don't become disheartened just keep at it. Just like any other training program it seems so hard at the start. 3 months on now I can burp instead of make those weird gurgling noises I was so used to. They are only small burps and I still can't do it all the time but with more practice I think it's going to be a lot easier.
I've experienced most of the other symptoms listed here all my life and thought I would just have to live with them.
Hope this helps someone.
The first publication which deals with how inability to belch can be treated-diagnosed :
Sites that you will also find useful :
All you have to do is to convince an EarNoseThroat Doctor or Speech Language Pathologist or Voice Doctor to do a botox for dysphagia to you . Botox for dysphagia is a known procedure to a lot of Doctors . You do not need to fly to another country to do it . Just go to your nearest city and there will be a doctor who knows how to do botox for dysphagia .
As the paper indicates , every test you do will come back normal , so avoid doing any test if you do not want to waste money and time . Just show the paper publication which I linked to the doctor you visit to convince him .
For the vast majority of the cases : No the root of the problem is nor dyspepsia nor psychological reasons as the doctors will try to suggest to you , its retrograde only neurological reasons in the UES which botox solves . Yes botox as it may sounds odd saves the problem permanently .
Hi Kev
I am a Certified Body Code Practitioner and I can help you with this.
I helped a client with severe acid reflux (15 years of suffering) and we were able to clear it so he is now completely off all medication. Whereas before he could not eat after 3.00pm or he would not be able to lie down to sleep, he is happy to report that he can now have a curry and a pint after 8.00pm at night with no ill effects.
Please let me know if you would like to try it.
Best wishes,
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa and welcome to Healthypages,
I suspect Kev won't respond as his question was 14 years ago, and he hasn't been active since that time. Certainly he hasn't logged in since the forum platform was changed a few years ago, so he's unlikely to even know you've responded to him.
