Hi im a 28 year old male and i have never been able to burp. Occasionally one tiny burp will slip out but its never intentional. Instead i get these low grumbles in my lower throat area. Sounds like my stomach is rumbling except in my throat. Its made worse by drinking anything carbonated and gassy type foods like mexican. During its worst times it often causes me to dry heave and have great stomach pains
any ideas??

Hi Kev,
I'm thinking on it, too. Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

RE: Cant Burp
thanks for the replies
i just got out of the military and am inbetween health insurance
i have coverage with the military but i have no access to it because they tend to process paperwork slowly
so i have not talked to a doctor...
RE: Cant Burp
Kev
If you are in Britain you can see a doctor for free on the National Health. My gut feeling (sorry for the pun!) is that it may be connected to your eating habits, especially as it gets worse with carbonated drinks and spicy food.

RE: Cant Burp
Hi Kev,
Oh yes, gassy drinks and spicy food can be menacing to sensitive tummies like yours. Nothing's worse than to feel like this following eating and drinking these things. I bet you a doctor would tell you to avoid them. Drinking milky drinks usually helps to take away the painful colic that accompanies this type of thing.
Make sure that you sort out your health insurance as well, just in case you need to see your doctor.
Nasty!
Love,
Patsy.

RE: Cant Burp

but its worse with spicy foods and carbonated beverages
today for lunch i had a subway sandwich and some water
and i bent over a table to pick something up and about threw up
my eating habits are pretty healthy as im trying to lose a few pounds
ill just suffer til i can see a doc i guess
RE: Cant Burp
Sounds like you may have acid reflux and/or hiatus hernia. Your best bet is to definitely see a doctor. You may want to do a search on the forums as I am sure there is some information about this condition.

Yes, go and see a doctor without delay.

RE: Cant Burp
OMg!! i get exactlly the same thing. its like ur throat gargles and sometimes when i feel really nauseus and i got to be sick loads of gas comes out then i'm fine!!! i thought it was just me!!!
RE: Cant Burp
My Nana gets this - by pure accident i got her to try some Liquid Chlorophyll and she let out this almighty belch, she said the horrible feeling in her stomach completely went. My son also gets these weird gassy burps which wont come out properly, he is drinking liquid chlorophyll too and it seems to be helping though not as apparent as it helped my nana.
RE: Cant Burp
i can't burp either and, when it gets too bad, i have to (yuk!) stick my fingers down my throat and then the air comes out! and i have a very healthy diet, no carbonated anything, even water can make me feel like this! i just figured that it's the way i'm made!
RE: Cant Burp
Sounds like there are a few people here who understand you Kev - it does sound like a hiatus hernia - my Nana had it too.
Its not in the genes though - unfortuntately I burp a lot! sometimes I forget where I am and do it out loud! my parents use to scold me for it but now they just laugh and tell me it's better than my f*arts!
Happy Friday everyone - thank goodness for the weekends!

I get like that sometimes but normally resort to homeopathy and take Carbo Veg. Usually within 15 mins any trapped gas comes out one way or another. Works very well when I get a now rare (thanks to avoiding soya in all forms) bloat, which makes me look like I am 6 months pregnant.

RE: Cant Burp
Hi, I only registerd to this forum so i could get reply to this topic, i have the exact same thing, i thought it was just me and all my friends think im weird, because randomly i make these noises like in my throat/chest, it rumbles, and it gets worse if i drink anything fizzy, i dont know about spicy food, i cant burp either, ive been trying for about 30minutes and ive done the whole "breath in air" thing and i still cant do it, its just made the noises in my throat/chest start happening, anyone have any idea what it is, i dont think it is that hiatus hernia because it doesnt say anything about making noises[&:] do you think i should see a doctor? i'm 16 so..
oh and also you wouldnt happen to fart alot too would you? or is that just me?
RE: Cant Burp
Hi,
My daughter is almost 20 and since the age of 3 or 4 has never burped. She would dearly love to sometime but cannot, she doesn't even get the throaty grumbly thing.[:o]
RE: Cant Burp
Hey, I have this problem too. I really noticed it when I starting drinking in high school. During my normal life its not that big of a deal, but when I drink anything carbonated, beer or cola, it gets bad. Sometimes I have thrown up just because of the stomache pressure. I also went to the hospital because of massive stomache pains lasting for a long time. They took an x-ray and said my stomach was inflated because of gas. It was so painful. When i got home the pain didnt go away, until I went into the bathroom and stuck my finger down my throat. That time wasnt cause by drinking either, im not sure why it happened. From what I read before it sounds like a muscle problem. Theres a certain muscle that needs to relax on command in order to burp, and some people just cant do it. Not sure if there is a cure for this, but I would do anything to be able to burp. Please keep this forum going, so we can get as much help as possible.
RE: Cant Burp
oh yeah, I definantly fart a lot too
RE: Cant Burp
:)Hi! My name is julie and i'm a 17 year old girl. I will be a senior in high school this year. I'm not sure where to start so first I will list some of my symptoms. If you have any of the same then you can read on to get the details of my breathing problems, how they started, the doctors who can't help, and what medicines, doctors, and tests i've tried.
[:'(]Symptoms: chest gurgling, gurgling up my esophagus loudly (not the type of stomach growling but it is different and louder and in my chest), feels like my chest fills up with air & I can‘t take a deep breath, when I can’t take a deep breath I can’t talk either, I can’t exhale when this happens I can only inhale small breaths at a time, I get dizzy if I don’t burp right away forced burps with my finger down my throat to burp (doctors say because the oxygen is being cut off from my brain when this happens), forced burps only though (stick my finger down my throat to burp otherwise I can’t let air out of my chest), total relief after I burp like that, only after I do some forced very loud belching/burps can I take a deep breath and feel complete relief until the next time, certain foods make it worse, laying on my back durring an attack brings relief until I sit up (if it was acid reflux then laying on my back would make it worse so its not just that), certain exercises/sports make it worse or trigger it (but sometimes ill be sitting there doing nothing so it's not asthma), inhalers don't help and sometimes make it worse, the gurgling comes sometimes even if I haven’t eaten or exercised all day (sometimes ill just be sitting in class and this loud gurgling comes, very embarrassing for a teenager) the gurgling is much worse after I eat though because of the slight possible acid reflux, the doctors say I do have very slight acid reflux but not enough to be affecting me at all this much so that just makes my problem worse but isn't the root of the problem. They've ruled out pretty much everything in medical history...
i came to the conclusion that most medicines they gave me were for people with acid reflux who had too much gas and burping. i on the other and don't burp so those just made me worse.
I have been taken into ambulances or by the paramedics and put on oxygen masks. I got put on oxygen once at a football game for my school during the fall and once at a state fair during the summer. I get these problems every season. The season does not affect my breathing. I get the problems in most environments but it was less in italy, florida, and upstate new york. Good air quality helps my problems but does not cure them at all so I know that is not it. I live in new jersey 10 minutes from nyc so I know that just makes my problems worse.
I have been to multiple doctors and specialists…estimated 6 family doctors, 2 pulmonary specialists (lungs) , 1 cardiac specialist (heart) , 2 gastro entomologists (digestive system and gas) , and i’ve had many tests like: tested for asthma, upper g I series, a special x-ray that showed my whole chest area where I had to drink this white pasty stuff that showed the doctors my digestive area and esophagus through my chest, ultrasound, the doctors wanted to make sure it wasn’t a vascular ring in my heart, tested for lactose intolerant (which the medicine I tried made me get sick and I love milk so thank god it’s not that), chest x-rays, lung x-rays, anything! You name it and I probably had it done.
I’ve tried so many medicines that I can’t even begin to name them all and the side affects.
Medicine when they thought I was lactose intolerant, 3 different inhalers at different times (2 of the inhalers backfired and when I was supposed to use them during an attack they just closed my airway more and made it harder to burp and get the air out & the other inhaler that was to be taken before any activity in the morning did absolutely nothing to help me) nexium gave me side effects of shaking, insomnia, dry mouth, nausea, and shortness of breath w
RE: Cant Burp
My sister can't burp either, hers was caused by being tube feed as a baby.
RE: Cant Burp
LmaoI had to reply to this! I'm 20 now and have also never been able to burp.
I get those embarrasing noises in my chest and throat that take place after I've had something to eat or drink that has bloated me a little.
Afterlunch times during college, we would sit down in a quiet classoom and low and beholdmy chest would start screeching.. tbh I think it sounds louder to myself than others but still people have questioned me saying "wats that noise" and I wud open my mouth as if to burp and the screech wud take place... looked like some kind of magic trick!:D my mates love it!
I'm not really bothered by it that much although when drinking beer it can become a bit of a pain as my stomach inflates like a giant beach ball and find it hard to resume on the beers and turn to the vodka;)
Also if youhave this problem andneed a good way to release air I suggest the following:
Sometime if i get really bloated andi'm in my house, I kneel forward on the bed and put my head by my knees so my arse is sticking up in the air.. LMAO IT'S TRUE but if u relax your arseand pull your stomach inair will gush out silently... feels much better after a few minute of doing this. 🙂
Anywayz it's good to know I'm not the only one!
RE: Cant Burp
Hi everyone!
I've just found this site and registered. I cannot believe other people have this too - I thought I was the only one!!
I've had it for about 10 years since I was at school. It was always so embarrasing when sitting in a quiet room! and really affected my social life.
I get it all the time - it doesn't really matter what I eat, and when I'm out having a drinkit can get so uncomfortable and I have to heave so that the air comes out.
I've also never been able to burp and rarely a tiny one might slip out. The 'basement' doesn't have any problems 😉
Please help if anyone knows what can help or cure it.
It's been the bain of my life!!
xxxxxxx
RE: Cant Burp
As with some others here, I registered just for this. I've had this problem my whole life. And of course, like everyone i thought I was the only 1. But I knew I wasn't. I knew google would help me out. Sometimes I can go months without sounding like a frog, but then I can do the frog thing for days maybe. & I can burp. Just can't force myself. I never was able to when I was younger. Just was able to do the involuntary frog throat thing. And unlike others, I was never embaressed by it & my stomach never hurts or bloats. I just would love to force out an earth shattering belch but i can't. Only involuntary burps.
RE: Cant Burp
hi bigkev, and welcome to healthypages, you may need to see your gp, however, with your age in mind you may like to try artichoke extract tablets
Artichoke leaves contain a wide number of active constituents including cynarin. Artichoke is traditionally used in Europe for the treatment of mild indigestion, particularly following a meal high in fat.
In a recent clinical trial with 553 people suffering from digestive disorders (including indigestion), standardised artichoke extract was found to reduce nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, and flatulence in over 70% of the study participants.
Each Healthy Direct tablet contains 7.2mg of the active ingredient cynarin.
• Has been found to be an effective treatment for indigestion.
• Can ease the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome by supporting the digestive function and increasing bile flow.
• By regulating bile production , Artichoke Extract can reduce nausea and abdominal pain.
• Artichoke Extract is thought to improve cholesterol balance.
• Also thought to support liver function.
As a food supplement take two tablets a day with food or drink.
please feel free to ask any questions regarding artichoke tablets
kind regards
mike
RE: Cant Burp
I also can not burp, all family and friends have always thought I was very strange!
I know it may sound odd but I really wish I could burp. Sometimes I do a small one and rave about it for ages after!
Sometimes get the grumbling noise you have talked about but not very often! Will never drink fizzy, alcohol is always wine. Tend to feel sick after most meals, although I have learnt to live with it.
Thought about going to see a doctor but thought they would just laugh at me.
Jasper xx 😀
RE: Cant Burp
Like so many others on this thread, I signed up for an account just now so I could share my experience also.
I hardly ever burp (as in once ever few months, and it is VERY feeble and comes without warning.) I also get the weird chest-gurggles like others here, and have trouble drinking carbonated drinks because they cause chest pain. Sometimes if I am walking around, or doing some sort of exercise after drinking a carbonated drink, I really start to feel awful. First I feel constant gurglings, and then my chest just starts to hurt. I feel like the breaths I take have to be very shallow, and it is hard to exhale all the way. Right after this starts, I start to salivate A LOT. As in, I will be spitting at least once a minute to stop my mouth from completely filling up. It really is miserable, and I can feel that if I could just burp once, I would feel completely normal.
The cure to this horrible affliction is as simple as lying down. The INSANT I lay down, I feel completely fine, 100% back to normal. After sitting or standing back up, after 20 seconds or so, it is all back on just as bad as it was. This has happened to me maybe 10 times, and is actually currently going on (I'm laying in bed typing this right now.)
On a normal day, after eating a normal (non-carbonated) meal, I still get the chest gurgles, but they aren't accompanied with pain. I feel like I need to burp, but i've felt this my whole life so I hardly even notice it anymore.
I was wondering what we all might possibly have in common. I think that, because I can't burp, I also can't eat very much. Due to this, I am generally underweight, with an extremely low body fat. Does everyone else that can't burp look like this also?
Just wondering,
Wishful-Burper
RE: Cant Burp
My daughter who is 13 has exactly this problem, shecannot burp. She suffers fromnausea and stomach / chest discomfort which I think is due to the trapped wind. She also has a phobia of being sick and I wonder if the two could be related. I cant believe how many other people have posted with this same problem.
RE: Cant Burp
My son is 15 andhas this disorder as well. He has recently brought it to my attention. After eating it seems as if the air rises out of his throat not in a burp but just escapes involuntarily with out any control over it. He is very thin as well although he eats well. he does not complain of any pain or discomfort. Sorry I don't have any answers either.
RE: Cant Burp
Hi my names is Brad, Im 18 and i have had somthing on the same page of this problem like everyone else is talking about. I registered just to post to this thread just like other people also.
I thought I had acid reflux and the doctors think i have acid reflux do to the frequent heartburn i have. They really don't understand the problem though. It is a lifestyle frustrastion and I wish it would just go away.
I can't do phsyical things after eating...period. I have to lay down just to keep my stomach from contracting and trying to push everything up or push air up that makes me burp. Somtimes i cant breathe at all because my stomach is sucking itself in.
It helps alot to lay down, or put my head down. It also makes me very tired and get headaches from pressure ive put in my head trying to burp.
This is a pretty embarrasing problem because by reaction i have to tilt my head for some weird reason. I think it helps me burp. But somtimes my head wants to just go in different directions.
It is genetic I know for a fact. Because my brother and my mom both tilt their head when they have to burp.
This is definently a stomach problem and has to do with eating and drinking. I find that the problem is very very bad if i go a long time with out eating then eat. And taking antacids takes away my heartburn but not the stomach contractions or feeling to burp and my head tilting.
Eating spicy foods makes the problem just as bad as other things but garlic is my worst enemy. I love soda but it makes my problem worse most of the time.
One thing that is opposite from other people is that my stomach problem is not bad at all in the morning or when im really tired. I think because my stomach is turned "off" so to say. After eating though it starts back up.
Ive learned to live with it, but my jobs haven't. I've been called lazy numerous times because I have to stop to bend over to burp a bunch of times. But this problem also makes me very fatigued and its very frustrating.
I understand everyones pain and i am on the same page, I have gone years and years with this problem since i was about 10-12. I am really suprised to see how many other people have this issue. I used to think i was all alone. So for me it is somewhat of a releif maybe if the problem is adressed enough it will be researched.
