About 5 days ago my 2year old son developed 2 big lumps in his neck, just under his ears, one on either side(not far off being the size of golf ball's) that came up within half an hour.
The doctor asked us to take him to the surgery right away.
The doctor gave my son a thorough physical examination, but found nothing wrong with my son:(. He did say it could be a number of things but sent us on our way with some "calpol"[:-].
The lumps were going smaller, but to my horror today look like they're going bigger again:(. We rang the emergency doctor (as it is sunday) they asked us to take our son back to our G.P tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!
I know you have lymph glands in your neck but I've never seen anyone with glands that look like my son's.
Is there anything I can do to help my son? Please, has anyone got any suggestions?
I would greatly appreciate any help:)
Thankyou

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Dear Crystalove
Well my father never waited with anything like with us when we were children, he shot us straight down the hospital even if we had to wait hours he considered it his right and what he paid his taxes for.
Always best to be on the safe side and be rest assured all is OK.

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
I would go straight to the local casulty dept, usually they have a childrens part, shouldnt hve to wait too long, dont bother withNHS direct, they are not much good.
RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Hiya
Has he got a temperature, any chance of mumps......would think about taking him to A&E if he has temp and he is breathing nearer 50breaths per minute.
Love and light to you both

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
It sounds like it might be mumps to me. Swelling of the parotid glands. Do a web search and see if the symptoms fit. It is viraland can make you feel very rough. If his temp is high I would phone NHS direct and get some advice.

Mumps...at a guess...I remember my son getting it when he was little, kind of sounds familiar.

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
TigerBee, he doesn't seem to have a temperature quite the opposite really (his hands, feet and lips keep going really cold)I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but these symptoms have only recently appeared.
Stormdeva, if it is mumps, where else would lumps appear? I've never experienced anything like this before:(.
My son is also going off food, or rather, not wanting to eat[&:].
Thanks for your support

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Hi Jackie
have a look at but dont panic, complications are rare....if your child has had all his vaccinations it should not be mumps.
Just try and keep fluids (water down)....
Hugs to you

Hi crystallove
Hows your little boy now?
Like TigerBee has said make sure he has plenty of fluids (water)
My own son only had the swellings in the glands nr. the ears...but,
if you are still worried or there has been no improvement...you could as someone has already suggested take him to A&E or the Keydoc...just go...However, if there is some improvement and you are happy to wait until morning...well thats ok also...your his mum & you know what is best for him
luv & peace

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
It does sound like mumps, the only area to be affected is around the throat, and you do go off, your food as its too sore to eat. I remember this from when I was a child.
soft food, would help, plenty of water, and no milk.
I hope your son gets better soon, sending love and healing.
RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Have you looked at his throat & tonsils? [:-]
I wouldn't worry too much if the swelling is on both sides, then it is likely to be an infection & I would only go to A&E if his temperature gets excessive. [&o]
It does sound like mumps or similar infection, in which case the lymph nodes do tend to swell as they are working hard to remove the byproducts of fighting an infection. This is a normal response in such situations. [&:]
To help the lymphatic drainage you could apply a cold compress to stimulate the circulation in the neck & gentle massage of the neck below & behind the area. Tension in the muscles of the neck will only impede the drainage. 😉

Thankyou everyone for your responses.
Your advice & support is greatly appreciated:).

Took Tom back to G.P, he gave him another physical examination but still can't say what it is[:@].
I told the doctor I WOULD return within a few days if there hasn't been a significant change in the size of the lumps.
As for me well, I'm ok (nothing that a week of continous sleep wouldn't put right!!! lol:D.
I think when it's your own you can sometimes feel pretty helpless, and it doesn't help not knowing what is causing it.

P.S I will give the massage a go but I will have to wait a couple more days, as he seems a little sore in surrounding area's. Thankyou Anahata xx

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
hi, my brother had this, i remember when i was about 3 and he was 4 and he had to stay in bed, his voice was a bit hoarse to and i think it was glandular fever/mumps kind of thing. he was better after about 8 days as far as i can recall. if it was anything serious your son would be very lethargic and bedridden so i wouldnt worry too much. these things always look worse than they are. healing on its way from the highest realms of healing.
with love

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
[&:]My husband took Tom back to the doctors this morning, the doctor sent my husband straight to the hospital:(.
I've spoken to my husband briefly, he said that Tom has a needle in his hand for something, and the doctor's had just got to Tom to take a look at him[&:].
I don't know any more other than my husband said they were talking about keeping Tom in hospital:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
I feel a bit like a lost part, but do understand that we have other children that need looking after too, I just don't know what to do.

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Hello Jackie
This can be so hard especially when you cant be there having done this with Jacob's pneumonia I know exactly how you feel....they may have just put a cannular in his hand whilst waiting for the doctor so that if she decided he needs fluids or antibiotics then these can be done straight away, also for any blood tests that need doing, saves from sticking needles in the poor chap every time...it will be bandaged up with a support underneath the hand.
Get yourself a babysitter and toddle over when you are ready, also the Dr should have some starting point now so phone the hospital it can be hard trying to contact partners if kiddies are distressed,
Hugs to you and your family

RE: Urgent! Can anyone advise?
Hi T
Sorry for not responding sooner but I've had hectic time.
Tom came out of hospital the same evening but with no results as to what it was.
They tested him for some real scary stuff (Lukeamia was one[&:] my husband said he felt so helpless while they were doing all the test's because it upset Tom so much he kept being sick[&:].
We've had to wait for the results. Hospital rang yesterday to say it was a throat infection (severe). He's on antibiotics and the lumps are slowly going down (we've been told it could take a while for the glands to return to normal).
Thankyou all so much for being there for me and Tom[sm=1kis.gif][sm=1kis.gif]
Thankyou T[sm=1kis.gif]

Hiya Jackie.
