Hello all

My friend asked me if I knew how to go about find out if her 9 year old is milk intolerant, I said " no but I know some people who might;)
So here I am. The problem, as a baby he was diagnosed with an intolrance to milk, symptoms were crying, upset stomach, and echema( exma how ever you spell it!), he grew out of it eventually. Just recently his skin has flared up again, and my friend thinks it might be related to milk, but wants to confirm it.
Do you have any advice on how to implement a diet like this?

Take care

I can't believe nobody has answered this one!

How is it going now? Has your friend's son had a diagnosis? The best way to confirm an intolerance is to avoid the food for a while and see if things improve.

Brooke gets eczema if she has cow's milk. Goat's milk contains much less casein and doesn't irritate her skin. You can get a nice soya ice cream too called Swedish Glace (yum)

me too, sorry Donna, i must have missed it...

I would say if you are going to think about eliminating anything from a childs diet then a gp must be consulted and informed, if there is an "official" allergy it should be on his/her records.

Most milk allergies are picked up with the PK test early on, eczema can flare up for all sorts of reason, including stress, pressure of peers, etc or changes in washing powder etc....is it in the usual hot spots (elbows, knees etc) or more random... Of course it can be due to a slight intolerance to something and dairy and wheat are the usual culprits...

by the way, is the child on organic or non organic,

There's a short Thread entitled Milk Allergens here

It's one that's quite common, but a Read through Allergy Forum or HP Search should fish them out.

The people I come across with allergies or sensitivies usually find they have an immediate reaction to things like milk or eggs. The itching happens almost immediately and when they cut the item out even for a day they notice a difference.

I'm treating a 2 year old at the moment for eczema and if she has eggs, milk or chocolate her skin breaks out straight away, which is how the mother knew that these were the culprits.

Sounds as if she pretty much has identified the problem anyway. The next step is how to handle it.

Cor blimey, I had forgotton about this one too:D

My friend did try eliminating different foods from her sons diet, but the condition didnt really change.
The only noticeable change was when they went on holiday for a week, and then it almost cleared up.
They are under the skin bloke at the hospital, and he is undergoing all manner of tests.
Thanks for taking time to reply;)

RE: Milk free diet

Gosh yes I know all about this, my daughter had this same problem. We had to give her a lactose free diet for over 5 years. Then I started working for my own GP and read an article in the Lancet which showed studies of how you can overcome the Lactose intollerance. The only problem was that it took a period of 2 years to gently introduce the food which is intollerant. I though about it and decided "well she has to live these 2 years anyway, so lets do something constructive with them". We embarked on a slow introduction method (1/4 teaspoon full of yoghurt once a week for a month to start with). Then gradually over a period of 2 years built the amounts and frequency up. It worked, she is now 17 and can tollerate milk products.

If your friend needs anymore advice get her to email me.
