Hi I'm new! And an looking for some help! I have an 8 year old daughter, who is very smart, but her attention span is very small. She cant seem to focus on what is put in front of her! I know part of this is just being a kid! But We have had the same complaints from her teachers the last 3 years. She wont do her work in a timely matter, she is distracting other kids. And I do notice it home too! I ask her to do something and I've gotta ask 5 times before she will actually do it! Its not that she dont like to do it she just gets distracted easily! She is such a spirited kid, I dont wanna see her spirit crushed! The teacher says that If she dont improve next year that she will have a very hard time in school. I overheard another mother the otherday at basketball camp, she is having the same problem with her child. The school suggested Ritalin [:@]! Which with all the side effects she refused to even try it, which i dont blame her! So her doctor suggested a vitamin that is purchased at a health store. I believe the name is pediacom. And she said her daughter has made a complete change (for the better of course) I also head about Efalex! I guess I just want some feedback on this!!!
RE: Child with short attention span? I'm looking for suggestions!
Hi Gilly, you reckon that ADD is caused by trauma and diet? Please explain more!?
.. I strongly believe I could ADD, after reading about it my life kind of "came together" and I felt an amazing feeling of relief over the things I had been hiding inside me.. Which are infact part of ADD, e.g oversexuality as child, inability to keep good eyecontact, inability to be alone, self-medication on cocaine which produces a relaxing effect rather than a "high" as with "normal" people, constant feeling of not being understood by others; a kind of lack on social sensibility and conduct, distraction during sex, surprising and surprisingly strong angerbursts... The list is veryvery long...
Would really appreciate if you were able to give me your views on this matter. I've really only read one book and spoken to a friend with the disorder.

RE: Child with short attention span? I'm looking for suggestions!
Dear Riikka,
Thanks for your PM, reminding me I had posted here!!![&:] I get so busy, I see a post I have some knowledge of and I post and then forget about it[:o] So sorry.
To be perfectly honest, I am not an EXPERT on ADD, but because of the research I had to do for this family I treated, I became quite knowledgable.
I think you will find there are genuine cases of ADD, where the child's pathways in his brain are not linked up properly. But according to my research, this is quite rare.
If we go back to Pre WW2, we don't find too many cases of ADD in children. There has been a great deal of research on how diet affects certain youngsters. Some do not seem much affected, if at all by the colourings and chemicals in junk food, (or most food to be honest these days)[:@] but others are to a small extent, and the group classified as suffering from ADD have the worst reactions.
It is thought to be a blood/chemical reaction in fact, to certain foods/additives, colourings etc.
It is hugely significant how children, like my client's son, changed their entire personalities almost overnight by a change in diet. I also believe that research is divided as to whether or not as an adult, these 'ADD' sufferers can eat junk food with no side effects. Medical opinion is half and half as to the affects on children, and then when they are grown.
It may be linked to the growth hormones? The jury is not out yet!!!
What has been found is that our Western diet is literally poisioning some children. It may also not appear to have an effect on so called 'normal' children right now, but what is the long term prognosis?
Supplementation in all humans is essential because of depleted soil, chemical additives and long term storage, but even more so for those who are growing.
Trauma - yes good question. Absolutely. I have found conditions such as ME to be brought about by Trauma too. My guess is that trauma and diet go hand in hand within ADD and many more conditions.
In my client's case it was twofold, the possibility of losing his father from the family scenario and an awful diet. His reaction was a subliminal kneejerk response to the situation. The diet was already wrong and causing unseen problems, and the trauma brought it to the surface.
I can't tell you much more than this as I havn't studied the Adult ADD enough, and what I say may be wrong. But there is something which is similar to Autism, but not as pronounced, and it is a sort of DISASSOCIATION with life and the people around you. (I cannot recall the actual name at the moment). If I do some research, and put it back on here, will you PM me again if it goes by 2 weeks without you hearing anything.:D
Hope that helps.
Love to you

RE: Child with short attention span? I'm looking for suggestions!
Thank you Gilly, it was very helpful.
I also saw my homepath yesterday and she started treating me on the ADD after diagnosing it. I'll have to go back next week to have some more work done on me (I think it's homeopathy and kinesiology together...) and she said I should get rid of it! ..I'm so amazed and don't know what to think. I've been on a no-carb no-sugar diet for three weeks now and she told me I can get back to a more "ordinary"diet in three days time, since my own blood sugar functions well now..
I mean, have you -or anyone- heard of ADD being treated and "deleted" with homepathy(+kinesiology)? My ADD just seems to be such a big problem, it's just my whole life if you see what I mean, and now someone has turned to me and said it'll be gone very soon. Someone tell me it's true

RE: Child with short attention span? I'm looking for suggestions!
Dear Riikka,
we are habitual creatures, so we find comfort in what we are used to. This is not a bad thing, as we tend to cope with how we are, so to open ourselves to change is a brave thing to do.
Change is inevitable & it is the farsighted thing to do - to take that step into the unknown. It's what developement or unfoldment is all about & you'll always find support on HP for allowing yourself to ride out those changes that inevitably occur.
This thread did run off track a bit, but we are here, now. 😉
I just returned to mention that - I have just replied to a thread on the Allergies Forum on the issue of Fizzy Drinks & their implications with hyperactivity, short attention & poor consentration in children i.e. ADD, ADHD, etc.
And.
RE: Child with short attention span? I'm looking for suggestions!
I've been having a very similar problem with my five year old. Has problems dealing with change but doesn't seem to be able to spend long on anything (although the school confirms he takes it all in) and he even had temper tantrums of the lying-in-the-middle-of-the-floor-kicking-and-screaming variety in the classroom as well as at home.
I flatly refuse to drug my kids and went instead to the homoeopath for help, as well as putting Bach Flower Remedies in his water bottle that he has in the classroom. Over the few weeks since half term, when we started this, he's been a different kid. Still really active, still gets angry, but not to nearly the same extent. He's come on leaps and bounds in these few weeks and is now sailing through school.
Home is still difficult, but I figure if he's going to be ok in one place and not in another, let the ok one be school. And I forgot to say that we're all on an additive-free diet and sweets are restricted to once a week.
