Hi all,

Today I had called from my son's school, that can i come to school to collect my 4 year old from school, as they suspected that he might have Chicken Pox, he has couple rash looking spots on he's shoulder with no head & and single one on he's neck, the school wont let him back in until the doctor say it's not Chicken Pox, & I feel quite idiot to call the doctor for a few spots, now does anybody knows the sign of the CHICKEN POX, or was the school over reacting, please help.

cheers

Farideh

RE: Chicken Pox

Hiya the chicken pox spots are quite red and pimply (not spotty) they tend to be a little broad and flat....they come out in stages and you may find in the morniing your child has more......some people are normally a little unwell before chicken pox spots appear, ie a temp. a bit grouchy or even just off colour without knowing why.....the exclusion from school is until that last appearance of spots (which can take three days for them all to appear) have crusted over (around 5 days) so it may be worth your while checking him out...obviously when you book the appointment let the receptionist know as it is contagious.....

good luck

RE: Chicken Pox

the thing about chickenpox is that the spots come out in waves - one day 3 spots, which may be non-specific and not typical water-filled blebs - and the next day a lot more have appeared, and a 3rd wave after that. If this is going around the school, then the likelihood is greater, and if there has been contact with a definite case in the last 21 days (incubation period) that also raises the chances.

it would not be possible for a doctor to state that a non-typical rash is definitely NOT chickenpox - just likely or unlikely - but often one has to err on the side of caution. having said that, it is a fairly benign infection, and the most important people to avoid are pregnant women and anyone with damaged immunity eg on chemo, etc

however for normal kids it is a good idea to get the infection and gain immunity at a young age rather than as an adult - whatever happened to chickenpox parties from days gone by??

wishing you an itch-free week ahead!

My kid's spots all started as little blisters straight away that just turned into bigger blisters - no spots as such really. As has already been said, they do not all come at once, definitely only a couple for the first day or two before the onslaught!

Better to get it whilst he is young - my (then) 4 year old had it really mildly, gave it to her brother (8) 2 weeks longer who was quite poorly, then to my then 10 year old - who really really suffered with it!

RE: Chicken Pox

oh i took both my children round to peoples houses that had chicken pox it seems less violent when they are younger or is it that these amazing little people just cope with it better!!

apparently i believe if you dont get a reasonable coverage the first time you may well get it again..

despite our best efforts Harvey our youngest refuses to get chicken pox:D but Jacob has had it....
