My sister has just discovered a lump about the size of a 10p piece in her 3 week old baby's breast. She obviously rang and contacted her doctor, who said that it was nothing to worry about, it was just hormonal. He actually squeezed the lump and fluid came out of the nipple. Has anyone else had any experience of this.
I know when i was 2 weeks old that I had a 'bleed' which the doctor put down to hormones. I know my mum had to have to treatment while she was pregnant with me as she had already lost two babies and my sister had to be stimulated artificially as she was receiving frozen embryos........maybe it is just as simple as that.

RE: Baby with breast lump
As a baby, my son had one nipple a lot more prominent than the other and the doctor told us it was hormonal. He's nearly 18 now, so I guess he was right. Just as long as the doctor has checked it out and she should obviously keep an eye on it.

RE: Baby with breast lump
Soon after my baby was born both she had hard lumps in both her breasts and was checked my a midwife who said it was caused my hormones, within a few weeks they were gone, and the baby has been fine.
From what I have read it happens quite often. Although it is quite scary when it's your baby, or one that your close to.
Take care
RE: Baby with breast lump
Hi,
About 5 days after my daughter was born (14 years ago this month!!), she developed swelling in both breasts and was a bit crotchty. The midwife told me she had developed mastitis (?spelling) from me breatfeeding her -
so I took her to the Dr who confirmed it.
I think that they gave her a short course of antibiotics - but safe to say I don't think it is all that unusual - but that is not say not to get it checked out though!!!
Happy days[sm=1syellow1.gif]
RE: Baby with breast lump
My second baby had breast lumps, the midwife said it was mastitis, due to hormones. I think it's something to do with the hormones we pass on to the baby when we are breast feeding. I seem to remember it went away in the same way it does with women, but obviously if it starts getting hot, red and painful I'd definitely take the little one to the doctor as it may develop into an infection. Your sister should still be getting visits from the Midwife, I'm sure she will be able to put her mind at rest, after all they have seen it all before.

Hi
I have 6 children and have experienced this with 3 of them. It is found in both male and females and is common.
Hope it helps[sm=FIFangel.gif]

RE: Baby with breast lump
I had this with one of my daughters and was told exactly the same thing by the doctor. I must admit I was pretty scared, particularly as my first two had never had anything like that, however, it had disappeared within a couple of weeks.

Thank you all for your replies. I passed on all your comments to my sister and she is much relieved by them. She has another appointment at the doctors tomorrow.
