Hi all,
I think I posted this subject here once before.
A lot is said about ADHD, and its usually said by those who know very little about it, and usually in a derogatory sense toward the parents of ADHD children.
I would like if I may to explain what ADHD is, what it isn't and how ritalin/concerta works for these children and how it doesn't for "normal" (note the quote) children.
ADHD is a brain chemical imbalance.
It is NOT a child just being 'naughty'.
The part of the brain which controls inhibiting behaviour is 'asleep' or subdued in children with ADHD.
Ritalin / Concerta are stimulating medicines which 'stimulate' the inhibiting chemical in the brain to produce.
If one was to give a "normal" child, Ritalin or Concerta, one would in effect be giving them an equivalent to an amphetamine. Thereby they would be bringing the child down from the ceiling, (ever seen a normal person on 'speed')? The effect is the same.
I'm not suggesting all parents of ADHD children have them put on Ritalin / Concerta, I can only say from experience that my sons grades have increased with his attention span while he is on the medication, his destructive behaviours have lessened and he has become a lot easier to handle and converse with while the medication is in effect.

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Having 2 brothers with ADHD - I totally understand what Spiritual Gal is saying. one responded really well to Ritalin and the other had bad reactions in that he would hallicinate and scare himself and the family in the process - my parents and brother decided to try him without Ritalin and though trial and error have found ways to help him to handle ADHD - I guess what I am trying to say is that it is down to the individual where possible and family to seek out the ways that work for them - its okay for people to spout on about what should and should not be the right treatment but at the end of the day it all comes down to what is right for the individual.

LOL

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hi Shelli, I was wondering if the Dr. are certain that the child in question actually has adhd before perscribing the ritalin or do they give it if they believe a child has adhd. I ask as after reading about adhd while trying to pin point my sons 'syptoms' so to speak and noted that they state its dificult to diagnose adhd, as it has simiular syptoms to other sn dificulties. Apologise for possible spelling errors.

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hi Rach, it's taken over two years for josh to and fro hosptial and they give you lots of paper work on behaveual to tick off one for school one for me. He never been personally studyed by a doctor for a long time. I would have like him to have been watch from a seprate room for a few hours and given tasks for them to watch. But i think they mostly go by what school says about them. I dont have alot of trouble at home with him he a very lovelble child. I think they like to make shore it's ADHD and not a form Autisum, although they say there is a connection.. Hmm not shore. too many letters;)

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hi Rach, lightwinds.
The problems with Nathans behaviour were noticable by the time he was 3. at age 5 he got excluded from school because they couldnt cope with him. It still took till 2 months before his 8th birthday for a full diagnosis. (From what I can rememberof Nathans diagnosis) there are set criteria for ADHD. There are 12 symptoms and a scale of 1 to 12. of which 1-2 are normal behavior. 3-4 are considered hyperactive, 5 and above are ADHD. Nathan was observed in school and at the psychiatrists office. Nathan was set tasks, and this is how they determined to what extent he had ADHD.
Dominic (my youngest) was observed in school and at one of the local clinics here. I now live in a totally different area. He attends the hospital for assesment by a psychiatrist.

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hi Lightwinds and Spiritualgal,
This is where my worry is with Harrison, he's 4.9 months and they don't see the real him, how he goes off and can be. Totally agree Wendy if they could watch over a period of time and see the real him worts and all so to speak. I have no confidence in the school in dealing with him at all, which is why i'm in such termoil at moment as to what to do. How some test and a an hour observation is enough to diagnose a childs disabilities i really don't know and if its going to take a few years to get to that stage and Harrison is supposed to cope in that school, i think i'll have a flamin breakdown 1st. Sorry to vent off i'm so confused and was so sure a few days ago, it stinks it really does. [sm=banghead.gif]

Is there anyway of getting a proper assessment privately does anyone know? (not that i think we could afford it, but still.)

sTrEsSeD, but caring

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hi Rach,
go and see your GP, have him to refer you to your local behaviour specialist. Unfortunately there is no fast route 🙁 The only reason Dominic got diagnosed so early is that his brother is ADHD. Keep on at them, (the doctors, the school) get onto your Health visitor (your son is under a health visitor till he is 5 years of age). Tell them you have heard about ADHD and you would like to have him tested for it.

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Hello [sm=wave.gif],

I went Wednesday to the Speech Therapist for Harrisons assessment, hubby came too. She said he wasn't in need of speech therapy, but felt a need to do some more assessments (fancy flip**n that.) She turned to hubby near end and said he was being very quiet, and asked his views. This is when my hubby blew me away, he told her all about how he'd not been sure with my wanting to 'home educate' but that he'd support me and how he'd then understood why i felt that way after seeing our son so unhappy and not wanting to be at the school, how even the h.visitor had said she understood why i didn't want him in that school and had decided to 'hs.' Then he said he'd come today to see why i had felt pressured and the need to put Harrison in the school that i so didn't like and had proven couldn't care less about our sons needs, and that after listening to what the speech therapist had to say and what the others so far had said, that our son was now definatley going to be 'Home Educated' and that we would save and have him assessed privatley and whatever the outcome 'we' Harrisons parents, who hubby believed were not properly been heard would deal with in what ever way we saw fit. That so far we had 3 seperate incidents where 3 different professionals who our son had come in contact with in regard to his needs had all said 'Autisim' seemed likely, but still observations and assessments over a period of time, where our child was excpected to cope in a place he truly didn't want to be (school.)
So the Therapist said to have a good think and she'd be in touch, thank you very much and good bye.

So, now i am going to be Home Educating our son, and i have only 1 obstacle to get over that actually does worry me and yes for all those who feel they know me its my Mum. She will have heaps to say and non of it will be nice or good, which bothers me as we've been getting on lately really well. It will probably be about how little i know and i'm not at teacher and will be totally letting my son down and will be seen as giving him more attention than my other sons etc.

So anyway thats where we're now at, and if anyone can offer any info that may help it will be greatly recieved as i'm now on a teach myself period before i start to teach my child even more so than i've been doing 24/7 for the last nearly 5 years give or take a few hours for sleep etc lol.

Be happy and well all
Love Rachael xxx 😉

Sorry if i've hogged this posting, and lost the original concern of 'adhd' not my intentions at all and apologise if felt. Rach x

RE: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Our eldest (now 20) has adhd, and while at school was on ritalin.

I do not know the ages of the children of HPers with this problem but if you thought you had to fight for recognition/ diagnosis and where relevant prescription of ritalin for your child you have seen nothing yet.

I presume your children are all being looked after by a pediatrician ! Beware the lack of any follow on consultants for late teens early adult ages. As your children get older make enquiries as soon as you can. The pediatrician will eventually discharge your (no longer) child and we certainly have found it very difficult to get referred to follow on "adult" specialists.
