My 15 month old has head lice I think. I have never seen it before so I have no clue what I am looking for. I used the head lice shampoo on him and now there are these little black specks at the root part of his hair and they are impossible to get off there are 100s of them. Are these nits? I thought nits were white in color not dark and how in the world do I get rid of them? I have used conditioner to try to get them out but they will not come out not to mention he will not sit still long enough for me to pick them out by hand it would take hrs. what should I do HELP!

RE: Another head lice ?

oh,
they're a nightmere! may or may not be nits you're describing??? the eggs are white the nits themselves look like tiny tiny fly like things...can't think of a better way to describe them. You need to repeat the shampoo/conditioner thing using a nit comb, neem oil treatment is good, you can get it from the health food shops. The only way to get them out is with a nit comb, you'll never be able to pick them out...dependant on how bad it is of course!

Good luck.... having a daughter with hair like a yetti when it comes to treatment I know how frustrating it is. Luckily since moving on from primary school we get less problems with it, but if one gets it, they all seem to!

When the headlice first lay their eggs, these are eggs are brown in colour, they are glued very tightly as close on the hair to the scalp as possible. When the louse hatchesthe egg then becomes paler in colour and as the hair gorws this is the whitish thing you say on the hair away from the roots.

The advice given is what i would say to do also tea tree oil bought neat and added to the shampoo (quite a few drops) is much better than the shop bought tea tree shampoo which is much diluted. There is also a natural herbal product called Delacet which has had fab reviews it is made by Healthpol.

use conditioner after each wash and keep an eye out from now on as if anything like my 3 girls they will keep catching them:(

RE: Another head lice ?

My daughter is 10 now and we've had head lice on and off for a few years now, it drives me mad,

I use the tea tree in the shampoo, conditioner etc..

But over the last few months we've had nothing,

whether this is down to the fact that a Hairdresser told to spray a fine mist of hairspray over my daughters hair, and l have been each day when l do her hair. It does seem have worked and l know other children have had them because we've had the letters home.

It might be worth a try

Hugs

RE: Another head lice ?

My two get head lice in the first week of every term so I know what a nightmare this is. I use conditioner and a nit comb every time I wash their hair but to get the eggs off, I use a carrier oil with a few drops each of tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus essential oils in it. I brush it through their hair then nit comb it out last thing before bed (and am utterly disgusted by what comes out). Then I leave it in overnight, nit comb it again in the morning and then wash it out. You need to use adult shampoo and wash it twice.

As I said, you'll be disgusted by what comes out, but I find it gets the eggs as well as nits and adult lice. Lotions and potions simply don't work, according to a friend of mine who's an entymologist (or however you spell it[&:]).

You can also buy some electric head lice zappers to get rid of the little blighters, I personally use the conditioning method so don't know much about them to be honest.

I'm lucky enough not to have been through this yet but i'm sure when my eldest starts school in September we will! I have been told that quassia chips are succesful. They look like wood chips and I think you soak them in water and rinse the water through the hair. My friend has 2 teenagers and they've constantly had bouts of nits and she says you just have to use conditioner and comb them out. There is also a natural spray which contains quassia and other essential oils that is sprayed on every day as a preventative measure. I use this on mine. It's not widely available but can pass on my contact details by PM if you want to try some. (Hope that's ok mods?)

I heard that nits prefer clean hair....I never wash my childrens hair (it gets wet in the bath but no shampoo)......do you think this is true?

nO I think they said that nits only like clean hair as the fact of having them made you feel a bit dirty!!!!!!
Only 2 ways to rid.Conditioner and a nit comb morning and night untill you no longer pull out any lice.......

Hi Caydensmommy
Eeeek, You poor thing! The eggs seem to get darker just as they are about to hatch..... sometimes you can see them moving inside the egg case. My ten year old gets them about once a term...... when he was a wriggly little boy I used to wait 'til he was asleep then lie him on the end of my bed, pull the eggs off one at a time with my fingernails, and dump them in a bowl of soapy water.......... a long process but it gets them all off and avoids chemical nasties. His hair is so fine that nit-combs don't work. Rubbing two drops of rosemary oil on my hands then running them through his hair seems to help.
good luck!

we have concerns about the build up of the chemicals used in prescribed head lice treatments, which potentially can cause neurological damage. I heard about a product made from the skins of grapefruit when it first came out a good few years ago, and tried it and found it to be extremely effective. being natural, there are no concerns about toxicity, and I cannot remember anyone ever coming back and saying it did not work. further details available by PM.

I still laugh to myself about the time when my sister-in-law was visiting, and she was telling us about how her part of Norfolk was overrun by head lice, and she was demonstrating on our young daughter how you just had to part the hair to see the scalp and there they were....and THERE THEY WERE [sm=eeeK.gif] sorry Starchild [sm=hidesbehindsofa.gif]

Worst of all for me was when I was trying to expain to my daughter about them (she always called them woodlice which made me laugh) and I told her not to get upset about them etc they only like clean hair all that sort of stuff to reassure her

that was until

I found that I had caught the little blighters I was horrified, hysterical, and [sm=eeeK.gif][sm=eeeK.gif][sm=eeeK.gif][sm=eeeK.gif]uncontrollable
