You don't say if a need for a filling has been identified. If it has, I don't have an answer - although the calc fluor tissue salt is said to be good for strengthening teeth.

I had similar feelings about not wanting my children to have fillings. They are grown now and I worked hard at getting them to look after their teeth - and no fillings have been needed.

What the civil rights position is I've no idea. The Government sanctions the use of silver mercury amalgam fillings, so those are standard issue.

He will do it if you go private and pay him, for sure!

As for doing it on the NHS, I would have a talk with him, explain your fears and ask him if he would fit the mercury-free ones. If you're on low income and can't pay privately mention that too.

Mercury is toxic of course, but moreover some people are directly mercury sensitive.

The fact the receptionist didn't want to give you a straight answer (If it was a straight 'No', why didn't she just say so?) suggests to me that there might an option for mercury-free but they don't want to shout about it or everybody would demand it.

Hi Sun Rose,

When I saw the dentist he said that to have white fillings at the front of the mouth is free. any others would have to be paid for.

I got a dental plan from Simply Health. the cheapest was around a tenner a month I think. this gave an allowance towards dental work of around 100. Im unsure of whether kids can go on to your plan for free(they do with the other health plans) may be worth checking out as it can make it a lot cheaper and more managable way to pay.
