I decided to start a thread with the above information as so many of us parents are not aware of the effects certain additives in food, drinks and sweets have on our children and their health.

For just over a year now, I have been avoiding giving my toddler any yellow or red sweets and I don’t, under any circumstances give him any white Nestle chocolate sweets or Smarties ever. I always check the packets to see what E’s the product contains…

It all started when my lovely baby turned into somebody else one day… It wasn’t serious, but it did distress me and I couldn’t understand why a normally happy and contented child would start being angry and cry and shout and be unsettled for a whole day, sometimes longer…

I discussed this with my mother-in-law and she asked me if I had given him anything different to eat that day. We went through everything and the only thing that was different, was that I had given him white Nestle chocolate buttons!! We started keeping an eye on his reaction to different kinds of sweets and food and that is when I realised that certain sweets causes my child to have a dramatic change in his moods!!!

Just last week, he was crying and shouting for a whole day and when my mother-in-law visited on Wednesday, I mentioned it to her. She asked me again if I had given him sweets during the week and it hit me like a ton of bricks! I gave him Rowntrees Jelly tots and Fruity chews!!! Because he doesn’t get that many sweets, I sometimes tend to forget to check the packets for Es!!! He hasn’t had any colored sweets since then and all is back to normal. He is my little happy and contented boy all over again!

And that is why I decided to put this information here.

Some of the Es that are allowed to be put in our children’s food, drinks and sweets are banned in countries like USA, Sweden, Norway etc., etc. The health implications of these additives are scary and I can’t understand why the UK government is allowing our children to be poisoned!!!!!

Instead of concentrating on banning herb and vitamin supplements they could rather spend some more time sorting out the poisons they are allowing to be put in our food!!!

Rant over.

The above link will take you to a website which tells you what each E color is and what it contains and in which foods, drinks and sweets you are likely to find it. It also tells you what effect it might have on, or reaction it might cause in your child…

After finding this site, I have made a note of the Es and their numbers and colours and I make sure that if they are on a bottle, packet or box, that I do not buy it. Smarties is a big NO, NO in my house, because it contains just about every E on the list including the red and yellow ones!!!

People with children with ADHD will particularly find the above site very useful…
