Somewhere I read that the effects of chemotherapy get less over time, while those of radiotherapy get worse. Has anyone else heard this? And could it be true?

I am talking about the long-term after effects, in terms of years.

This may sound a bit heartless but perhaps the benefits outweigh any risk? I mean, healthy people obviously wouldn't undergo such treatments, so there must be a necessity first and any years after are a beautiful bonus?

Thats the same with ALL medical treatments. No drug treatment or procedure should be done unless the benefits out w eight the risks. 🙂

You may find this link helpful. Some side effects can take some weeks to appear but I am not aware of side effects getting worse worse over time.

I suppose it should really be that the benefits outweigh the side effects too. Thanks Tashanie that article is pretty comprehensive. It also goes to show that it really all depends on the area treated and how many treatments were needed too.

When I had breast cancer in 2001, the chemo regime was the pits. I would not want to go through it again, however, about a month after the 6th and final cycle, I felt almost human again. Then I had the radiotherapy - 30 days throughout November/December - last session was New Years Eve. Even now, in 2015, I experience the odd 'zing' of pain in the irradiated area. A friend, who was a fellow breast cancer patient, but also a retired radiologist, explained to me at the time, that radioactivity will remain active in the patient for an indefinite period, and the 'zings' that I felt would be synapses or nerve endings contacting within the tissue! I would not agree that the effects of radiotherapy have become worse - nor have any of my friends (or patients - I'm a lymphoedema therapist) reported worsening symptoms after treatment.

(can't seem to find the quotation marks - can't find a lot these days - aftereffect of the radiation? 😉

I was not complaining Cassie, just curious why I am having kidney trouble now - whether it has anything to do with the treatment nearly ten years ago.

Anyway, so probably it isn't. Fair enough, just getting older ......

Yup sadly getting older does that to us :-(. Was the radiotherapy in the area of your kidney ? If it was then it is possible it is linked. even after all this time. But in any case mention your concerns to your doctor.

Now getting older is something I specialise in lol! Anne Marie ten years sounds like a long time but then who knows if any tests/trials have been done so long after? Radio/chemo are such big things they must surely leave an imprint on the body.

The radiotherapy I had was for cervical cancer, I don't know whether it touched the kidney. Probably not.
And I still can't find the way to quote ... were there not quotation marks in the line-up just above here?

Technology defeats me too at times. I doubt if treatment for cervical cancer went anywhere near your kidneys. I do hope you can get your kidney problems sorted out. Feel free to pm if want advice on any medication they may suggest

I would never have any of these treatments because the side effects will affect you years later.
Iwould prefer to go the alternative route.

I tried to, but that did not seem to work. I am still surprised about that. It was nine years ago. I am very very weary of 'normal' western medicine and - apart from the check-ups - I haven't seen a doctor since.

Come here and do yourself a Flow System Analysis from Biomedx and watch your health return. I'm sort of over the old school style and want to cheer you up with good health practices experienced and used over 17 years here in Hove, UK and worldwide. Students have become well quickly and seems you might be the right one to go for this. I experience 96% of all people getting well following their sessions and courses.
