Hi,

It has been 8 days since surgery. The weather was nice so I decided to take a very short walk on my road. Right before I finished I stumbled over a pavestone. I did not lurch fprward or it was not really that bad, but obviously it would have been bestvavoided. Did anybody else ever have a similar experience in the early post op days? Please give me some reassurance people. I don't think the shock was big enough to cause a disc prolapse. It just pulled on the incision a little and I did not lurch forward.
Please please reply

It would take MUCH more than that to cause a prolapse. And I did FAR worse to a scar the night after I had elbow surgery!! It healed just fine, and the elbow was fine too. I am sure you have nothing to worry about. Just focus on the fact that your recovery is going well 🙂

OMG you seriously need to relax. It will take more than a trip to reherniate and I don't understand why you are so positive you are going to reherniate. When I had my discectomy I didn't even know you could reherniate, and from memory only one person on here recently has talked about this issue and unfortunately for her she now has to have a fusion very quickly after her discectomies and you don't want to be walking in her shoes, trust me. Your back is tougher than you realise, I fell down the stairs four days after having my fusion and apart from some lovely bruises I did no damage to either my fusion or my scar, which is about twice the length of the scar I had from my discectomy. I personally think you need to stop looking on the Internet for what can go wrong and concentrate on what you have got already. As I stated before to you if you keep thinking about being disabled it will not help you to recover and to be honest in my case I find this kind of attitude very frustrating. I am disabled and have been medically retired at 43, I use a wheelchair now when I got out to doctors appts but spend 95% of my time bed bound I refuse however to be miserable. This helps no-one and would only drive away the people I love most, as no one wants to hear doom and gloom and what ifs all the time. So please go and start looking forward to having a child and spend your time reading information about having babies and try to chill out. Do your exercises, have your physio and get on with what will more than likely be a back issue free life.

yes i agree with wend i re-herniated twice after my discectomies no reason i can put my finger on but now i know why as my surgeon has explained to me i am now facing a two level fusion very soon i use zimmer frame in house im having falls and i need wheelchair to go out and i may never recover from my nerve damaged so i may never be able to work again. so as wend has said just try not to think negative sorry it has to be said you can't keep thinking the worse.

and also i would just like to say that if you did re-herniate you would know about it because i can tell you i was howling in pain as soon as i put my foot on the floor, and that's what im going through now the medication im on is helping but i can tell you im still in horrific pain so please stay calm and look forward to your baby coming in to the world.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for replying. I feel much better having read the responses.
To Wend I would say I 100% agree with you. I think I am frightened because I have been so disabled for the past 8 months, and I just don't want anything to get in the way. I was a very independent person and I just want my life back. I totally understand what you mean. I just can't help my anxiety.

I wonder whether a trip to the gp or a phone call and chat might put your mind at rest? Maybe you are in need of some mild tablets to help you relax and rest more?

hi there, you seriously need to calm down! sounds like you are 'on pins' all the time. listen to your body, it will tell you if you overdo anything, if this happens then you just need to make the most of resting/relaxing, especially before your wifes wonderfull baby arrives:), by then you will both be so busy and you will have healed more by then. wend and claire (hi ladies) are spot on when they say you would know if you had done any damage, and that it would take much more than a stumble to do any damage. surely your wife must think and say the same as us ?, get your mind off your back by reading ,tv, dvd, walking.im similar to wend at this time, as in i spend nearly all the time in or on my bed. ive had horrendous sciatic nerve damage for 18 years after 2 laser surgery operations in the late 90s, i was spoke to like sh**e twice by the surgeon and left crippled with the most horrendous pain for years, im sure he ballsed up my second my second operation. i was kept on the waiting list for 15 months before he did my first operation, i seriously believe he looked down on n.h.s patients!!!. and im damn well sure there must be others that were treated the same but never spoke up, i would love to find them and they could tell me their stories!
so keep your chin up,you are post-op, and i bet you were lucky not having to wait 15 months like i did! you are going to recover :).

be lucky, think positive, and all the best!

Hi Everyone,

I was very touched by all the messages. I think you guys are right. I don't think I reherniated because nothing really changed after that incident. However, I think maybe I am getting tired. I had my op on the 6th of June 2013. I came home o Saturday the 8th, and since Tuesday I was walking for around thirty minutes every two hours. My back was sore and stiff but I managed these walks. On Friday, the day I had the stu mble, I had been up for nealr an hour and within this time I walked for forty minutes, got dressed, shaved, had breakfast. This was the longest I had been up and I think since then my body and muscles feel a little tired. Can anyone tell me how much I should walk within the first few weeks and how frequently. Onviosuly if I tire myself out I am not doing myself any favours because recovering from muscle fatigue typically takes me around 8 days or so (I know this because pre-op overexertion was only relieved after a similar period of rest).

Anyway, before I go I would like to say thabk you to Clare. I think you have been through an incredible journey and in spite of your troubles you are still sounding strong. It makes me look like a spoilt brat. Wend, your message has also been sobering, but voredom during recovery is easily filled with thoughts of gloom. I know this cannot go on.
Daveyam, your post ended with an energising proclamation 'you will recover'. It sounded so good when I read that. Daveyam, who botched hour operation. Was it Mr Knight of the Spinal Foundation?

hi

yes im in agony iv'e had a terrible time since feb but you do have to stay positive for your own sanity i am very scared and nervy about my fusion ive been told it can take up to 12 hours as im the only one booked in for surgery on my surgeons team but im still staying in quite good spirits even after my second discectomy once i was home i tried not to worry if you do your just gonna wear yourself out not only physically but mentally like i said if you get pain that's worse then before your op then that's the time to start worry. as for how much walking to do just listen to your body it will tell you when enough is enough, but if you carry on like this you need to contact gp explain your worries maybe he/she will help you.

Hi Clare,

Thanks. I think that your positive outlook really inspires me. Your fusion will be fine. I know some people who had it done. I thibk my main problem is I haven't found a rhythm to these post op days. As long as I can get into a comfortable routine, I think I will be able to get by.

Regards

I also stumbled the first week after surgery and to be honest I was scared/worried but there was no injury only to my pride. Think positive it can only help. I found a recovery guide from the royal college of surgeons which gives a week by week guide of what to expect. I walked daily and listened to my body walking more some days than others. Enjoy the warmer weather and try to get out every day I found this helped even on cold wet icy days.
Please try to relax as constantly worrying doesn't help and only tightens your muscles.
Take care and concentrate on your recovery before baby arrives.

Hi Emlou,

Once you got past week one, did you stay in bed a lot? How much walking did you do initially? I think maybe I need to rest for a few days more and have shorter walks. I just can't find a rhythm or balance to my days. This evening I also noticed a little blood and rwsidue at the bottom of my bandage and I am trying bot to panic. I might be able to see my GP tomorrow and I hope the wound is not infected. I think maybe all the walkig has caused a little trauma to the area. I was up for most of my day today. Maybe I should rest more?

not sure who i should say it woz on here, but the surgeon sed recovery around 3 months, and most people back to work not long after, yet here i am 18 bloody years later and still crippled with horrendous sciatic pain in lower back, buttock, leg, outer right foot and three toes, also numbness, and horrible crushing sensations in my foot. i havent worked since!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'll tell you what, i've been to bloody hell and almost driven insane, and other stuff which i dont want to mention, over the past 18 years!. i had 2 lasor ops on l5/s1 twice. woz made to wait 15 months in agony, thats 3 months longer than a full funding year!!!. my leg and toes were so sensitive with the burning pain i could'nt even have the bedsheet touching them, let alone a quilt!!!!!!!!!. i envy you, you are in a great position, recovering well, new baby on the way. i have missed a lot of my childrens life thru all this,my girls are now 20 and 22, the latter left home last october, and i feel so guilty. you are on the brink, so dont overdo anything, chill, and look forward to the most wonderfull thing that will soon happen.
regards!, daveyam!

Dear Daveyam,

There was a little blood on the bandage. I am worried. Is this normal after 11 days?
I am going to seee my GP tomorrow and hope she can help.
I am sorry to hear of your troubles Daveyam. Are you currently on pain medication? Are you awaiting another operation?

hi there, i would'nt worry about a bit of blood, puss maybe, but not blood, it shows theres no infection at the insision site. your gp will advise you and maybe get the nurse to change your dressing, unless you do that at home?. it takes awhile to heal, some people take longer than others. i've been lucky and have really good healing skin.
my gp put me on liquid morphine with my latest flare-up and it did'nt even touch the pain!!!!!!!!. im on pregablin, its meant to numb the receptor in your brain so you can't feel the pain, and it's not working. these doctors think they can stop nerve pain but they can't, they dish so called "painkillers" out then weeks later when you tell them they don't work they say 'you can also take 2 paracetamol every 4 hours along with your prescsribed medication' as if they've found a miracle painkiller by mixing both!!!. what a load of crap some of them say!!!. once my gp told me that my previous so called "painkillers" were very expensive when i told him they were'nt working! how damned arrogant! i nearly knocked his head off !. i now see another gp within the practice!.will tell you about my scan results tomorrow,or today coz its 1am. gud luck at the doc's,although you won't need it,lol.

all the best n be positive, daveyam!

Hi Daveyam,

I am really sorry to hear of all your troubles. Nerve pain is resistent to painkiller's in general. Ibuproen helped with muscle pain but it never helped me with the pain I had in my hip. That was sciatic in nature. I thibk the problem is that docotrs just think the only solution to pain is painkillers. I have another longstanding medical condition and that has never responded to any painkillers.
Anyway, some combinarions of drugs may work, since I know a few people who take a cocktail of medicines. There is one guy who works at my local hospital and he also takes plenty of drugs to treat his condition. I feel sorry for him because he would have been a candidate for fusion surgery but he has arthritis in his vertebrae so they told him he must have the drugs instead.
I hope you find some kind of relief.
Realistically I don't think I can work until the condition has subsided. The stiffness comes on after a while and I can barely walk when that happens.
I havan appointment to see my GP today. Hopefully she will be able to inspect my incision and see why there was blood last night. The problem is that the GP does not redress the wound so if it is deemed necessary I will have to wait for the nurse. The nurse is fully booked and I was told there may be a long wait. Since I can't sit for very long, I hope the nurse can see me soon.
Anyway, these days, as anticpated are hard. I some ways these initial post operation days are harder than the days when I was struggling with the prolapse. Now I have more pain in the back, muscle stiffness and my problem has not really subsided. I think only after the incision heals would I be able to work on my gait. The mai problem is that walking with a sjorter leg makes it hard to move around, and the muscles get tired and inflamed. This will take ages to soet out. However, I think I must try and get on with things and see how these next couple of weeks proceed. I think the area of the incision heals inside out, and the deeper pain within the muscle is what appears to be causing some rigidity in the area.

Hi Hope - why not try Bowen Technique? This may help speed up your recovery (and doesn't fiddle with skeletal structure so no chance of making you 'worse') - I think some of your problem may have an 'emotional' link, which should be addressed, to help unblock the healing process. Thank you Jabba the Hut. I will look into it. I went to see the doctor. She changed the dressing and gave me antibiotics. However since I returned home, I feel some of my pre op symptoms have returned, nanaely the tightness in the right hip. This hadn't happened since I had the op, and now I am so scared and worried.
I don't know how this prolapse thing heals or gets better but I am so sick of this. Surely wih each passing day I should be feeling better rather than the way I feel now. At present I feel worse than pre-op so where can I muster strength to be positive. I hope I have not prolapsed again. I don't think I did anything to have brought it on.
