I concur!!
Hi Dave
Three weeks in and I haven't felt so good in a long while. My pain levels are 1 out of 10 for 99% of the time, occasionally getting to a 2 or 3 first thing in the morning - I have been very lucky so far.
The hardest thing is to remember that I have just had a serious operation, because it really doesn't feel like it!
Best of luck with yours 🙂
I agree wholeheartedly with MATRICK!
I am recovering from my TELFD of the lumber spine after my 2nd MISS operation under Mr. Martin Knight. As with MATRICK, the Surgical and Ward staff were fantastic!!
I too, left hospital after an overnight, belt and braces, observation stay. I walked out the Hospital, turned right on to Mareylebone High Street, hailed a black cab and went Paddington Station and caught a train home!! Brilliant!! Home in 4 hours!!
Don't hesitate, consult with MK now, and feel the difference!
Good alternative Spinal Surgeons for single level, non complex, MISS endoscopic spinal operations are Mr. Peter Hamlyn and Mr. xxx Malik, both of London clinics. They are good, but they are not Mr. Knight!! LOL!!!
I would give anyone else claiming loads of MISS experience, a wide berth!!
Hiya DAVEYAM!
Mr. Knight used to run The Spinal Foundation from Rochdale and later from Congleton in Cheshire, whilst then carrying out the procedures at the BMI Huddesfield, were I had my first. These have all now closed!!
He now works from The BMI Weymouth Hospital, Weymouth Street, London and Fawkenhan Hall Hospital in Kent. He may also work at a 2nd Kent Hospital?
Best wishes for a positive recovery MATRICK!
SPINELF
Thanks SPINELF
Glad your procedure went well ! Isn't it a marvellous hospital, more like a 5 star hotel, I was Dr Knight's first patient there 🙂
It's exactly four weeks since my procedure and I feel 99% perfect (I appreciate that internally my disc wall still needs to heal for longer etc.), I am walking like a normal person at a normal speed with a good posture. My pain levels are now mainly 0s with the odd 1 now and again (1 not actually being pain! More like a twinge!) - It really feels like a miracle 🙂
Like I said before my main annoyance is feeling this good and enforcing the restrictions on myself. I can't wait to get the green light to drive, walk further etc. I just need to be patient and wait two more weeks to start the next stages of Physio.
Good luck with your recovery too!
Matrick
Easy does it!!
Yes, Matrick, it is an incredible experience, especially given the alternatives!!
Take it easy though, the slower you recover the less chance of the best recovery.
Thanks for the kind regards, best wishes to you for your full recovery!!

hi spinelf, sorry for the delay, thankyou for your answer.i wonder why they closed the hospitals?. i had 2 ops in the late 90s at rochdale, never thought it would close down!.
it was mostly private back then i think. i have just had a scan at burnley general hospital and i have 2 bulges, l4/5 and l5s1. been housebound for 8 weeks now!!.
I so sorry to see that you are in so much pain and disability Daveyam! I sincerely hope you get some treatment and rest bite soon! Take care!!
No, I don't know why MK has based himself in London and Kent now either!! I suspect it is a personal 'end of career' based decision, but I don't know!
However, for me in Wales, it was a good decision, 6+ hours to and from Huddersfield, nearly killed me!! LOL!!
Best wishes and kind regards to you Daveyam
SPINELF
hi spinelf, blimey that was a long distance for you to travel for your operation. glad to hear it was worth it. my c.t. scan showed 2 disc bulges, but the surgeon didnt believe that these bulges were causing my horrendous sciatica, thats because the bulges didnt correspond with the location of where the pain is in my leg!. i cant have a m.r.i at the moment because i still have an old spinal cord stimulator implant which was disconected years ago, so he suggested another c.t. scan with a dye injection hoping he can see where my nerve is being compressed. if that does'nt work i'll have the stimulator removed and then i can have an m.r i. oh hell, what a predicament! i could be waiting months for a final answer! i've been housebound for 2 months now!. i had 2 spinal lasor-op's in the late 90s, i was treated like sh**e !!!!!!!!!!!. thought i was dying after the 2nd op, went down to 8 stone. i really wanted to physically cut off my leg!!!!!!!. my family brought me from the brink but it took a couple of years. our 2 daughters were 6 and 4 back then, my 6 yr old used to get upset seeing me stuck in bed, asking me how long before i could get up and about, it broke my heart, she would faithfully bring her school reading book up to me every night, and i would i praise her for how well she was doing, always feeling so guilty, our 4 yr old didnt realise as much how i was, i could'nt play with them both in the park with their football and push them on a swing, it was killing me, i had so longed for kids then bang,i was crippled with pain, our girls are now 22 and 20. all those years, it hasnt all been bad but boy we've missed out on a lot!!!!!!!. we have such a close relationship because i've been stuck at home so many years, not able to work, with the most patient wife in the world!! its our 25th wedding anniversary this year and im praying i can take her away for a weekend. i never thought i'd be writing all this personal stuff, its just suddenley burst out of me!!!. gud luck to anyone thats pre-op, post-op or just waiting in agony for the next scan!!!
daveyam.
hi matrick, you are doing fantastic!!!!!!!!!!! as you can see in my post to spinelf mine was a bloody disaster:mad:, thats why i resisted telling you untill you were well on your way to recovery, and i am very happy that you are,:). ive wrote stuff that i never thought i would share on a forum but everyone on this 'back problems' forum seem so nice and genuine i thought i might as share my experiance of years of suffering and lost years, hope i haven't brought anyone down.if so, then i'm sorry.
all the best,daveyam
Hi Dave
I am thankfully still doing well, I feel very lucky 🙂
You've had, and still are having, a very rough ride! Things won't go right for everyone, you certainly seem to be one of the unlucky ones.
I genuinely hope you get yours sorted, stick at it, because as am sure you will 😉
All the best, Matrick

Does anyone know why he does his surgery on one side of the spine only at any one time ?
- So if you have problems on both sides you need two surgerys?
My 11 week update 😀
Still doing well, I'm leading a normal life again just avoiding heavy lifting or awkward twisting - common sense really. I am in no pain, maybe get the odd ache but that's it.
I am doing muscle rebalance Physio, lots of core work. I am now cycling on an exercise bike between 30 minutes and an hour every day and loving the exercise. I flew to a trade show in Barcelona four weeks ago, drove to France last week on business and drove to Manchester last week. I'm in the south BTW.
Not a lot more I can say really except that Martin Knight needs a medal, my whole life has changed 🙂
I genuinely wish everyone else the best with their back problems, it really isn't fun. A colleague is booked in for open back surgery in a few weeks, he's really suffering at the moment and living on Morphene..... Reminds me how lucky I have been so far. Hopefully I'll continue to be one of the lucky ones.
Take care all.
Does anyone know why he does his surgery on one side of the spine only at any one time ?

It's not just one side at a time it can also be one level at a time. I'm sure that Mr Knight would have explained it and when you think of the size and placement of the incision and the placing of the lasers and other instruments it is easy to see why really.
The surgery is carried out in an awake state so that MK can test what is the real cause of the pain and remove it, this takes a couple of hours and can be very wearing for the patient. Although if there is a nearby problem that can be treated from the same position then it will be done, the other side is protected by the facets and vertebrae and all the instruments would need a new incision on the other side which would not only extend the length of the operation but cause more tiredness.
MISS is not open back surgery which could expose both sides of the spine at one time.
Also allowing one side to recover is best as a true picture and reassessment can then be followed.
But you can always ring or email and ask for an explanation.
great news!
hi matrick, good to hear from you. i'm really happy you have recovered well:), wish my experiance of disectomy had your outcome! i had to be transferred to a nearer hospital thru' sheer pain. it took a secretary 3 WEEKS to type a surgeons request to another hospital for a mylegram for me, then 3 weeks later i rang the other hospital to see how the request was going and they told me they HAD'NT recieved it, THATS 6 WEEKS wasted!!!.I RANG THE ORIGINAL HOSPITAL to see what was going on and they instantly FAXED the request, JOB DONE!. they could have faxed it instead of writing, after all, i have been 90% housebound almost 4 months. it makes my blood boil:035:!!!. all the best to you.
kind regards, daveyam.
Thanks Dave 🙂
I would've been livid too, it's bad enough waiting for actual treatment let alone for nothing !
Really hope you get there in the end, don't give up 😉

Matrick
Hiya Billyboy
Does anyone know why he does his surgery on one side of the spine only at any one time ?

Sorry about delay Billyboy, I had post op flare up.
Cassie is correct in her answer, however, depending on the condition of the sufferers
spine and available 'working space' it may be possible for MK to reach across from left to right and carry out 'uncomplicated' removals or trimmings of disc and bone material, he did in my 2013 operation.
Also, MK cleared 4 separate impingement problem areas, (both on the right side 'but' at 2 levels) the main L5/S1 level and also at the L4/5 level, where a revision took place of my 2008 ELFD.
So the decision to cross from left to right or up and down is largely dependent upon the condition and space available within every individual patients spine!
Hope that helps Billy

10 month update:
It's about ten months since Dr Martin Knight performed TELDF on me and I couldn't be happier.
I totally have my life back, no pain at all, no sciatica, I just avoid heavy lifting and stop every hour for a quick stretch when driving. I am doing long haul flights on business trips without any issue too! I was also lucky and didn't have a post operation flare 🙂
I was driving after 6 weeks and flew a short haul flight after 8, but now I do it without any aches.
From my own experience I can 100% recommend talking with Dr Knight 🙂
Hiya Matrick!!
Your news about your progress has cheered me up no end!!
I am so very glad to read about your improvements and see that they mirror my very positive experiences!
You have been truly 'Knighted',
Spread the gospel brother!!!
Kind thoughts and best wishes

Hi there Spinelf!
Thanks for your post, it would be silly for such good experiences not to be publicised. I have come across quite a few persons since who went the conventional route - damn glad I didn't.
Stay healthy 🙂

Hi Raymond, Welcome to HP.
Sorry to hear about your disc, have you been to see MK yet then? What were the results like? What operation have they offered you?

Have been to see Mr knight and he thinks I am suitable for the endescopic procedure however the consultant I saw in Ireland told me the exact opposite .the more people you see the more confused u get
What made you get a second opinion? Wat did they offer you in Ireland, fusion?
You must be paying prvately so you have the whole world to choose from there are quite a few outside the UK that do the laser endoscopic procedures.
Consultant in Ireland suggested an epidural to help with the pain while the disc heals .his mantra was surgery is the very last resort .he has heard of Mr knight and wasn't very complementary did u hav a procedure with Mr knight how r u doing now .r u active in some sport raymond
Hi,
I agree that surgery should be a last resort. I couldn't afford Mr Knight's fees and the NHS offered a full fusion with the possibility of no lessening of the pain with me in a wheelchair. Whilst I can still walk a little on good days I will stuggle on, so no I am not active in any sport lol.
Discs can and do heal though, but you said you had a ruptured disc at L5S1 which is where the largest shearing force is, and a rupture is severe compared to other disc problems.
Have you read Sarah Keys Back Bible? It really explains well and is all about self help 🙂

If I had the money I would go to the states for regene xx therepy I think it's the future lottery win thank u for book recommendat ion take care r
I thought that I would drop back onto this forum and see if this thread was still going. It is and it appears that people are still interested in feedback on Martin Knight. I first posted on this forum thread on page 4, this was just prior to me having surgery with Martin Knight in April 2013. I posted a few times since then and everything was positive but then I just got on with life so haven't posted in a while.
Life is so good now and I felt it wrong not to post again to show others that there can be light at the end of the tunnel 🙂
My previous posts show that I was back to work after 6 weeks, admittedly on light duties but after 6 months I was living life normally but avoiding heavy lifting and ensuring that I only drove for 45 minute periods without a 5 minute stop (to walk around and ensure my spine wasn't pressured). I had the odd sciatic twinge (not pain simply awareness) for the next year but essentially things were perfectly normal and I was able to fly on business again with regularity. An exercise bike and core strengthening exercise made a lot of difference to me.
Now three years on, I had no relapses in between, I still refuse to lift anything heavy, suitcases carried correctly are ok but nothing silly, but other than that I lead a 100% normal life. I am still regularly flying on business, a lot more long haul now, and I drive long distances into Europe, stopping every 90 minutes or so (because I feel I ought to rather than because of any pain).
I have no remaining back or sciatic symptoms at all, nothing! I am also practicing martial arts again, Wing Chun Kung Fu, training at classes 3 - 4 times a week! I feel fitter than I have ever been, taking into account that I am 43 years old rather than 20 of course! Quite frankly life is so good now and I will never be able to underestimate what Martin Knight was able to do for me.
Of course everyone's problems are different but I was genuinely heading for a wheelchair, just before surgery I could hardly walk and was in excruciating pain, I was convinced that my career was over....... I would say to anyone in a similar position to at least talk to Martin Knight, have the initial consultancy and see what you think.
I wish everyone the best of health and please don't give up, things can get better 🙂
Best regards
Martrick.
Matrick thanks so much for posting your experience. What procedure di you have done and on which discs/areas? And how much was it!!
Such good news though, I am so pleased for you.
MK was brilliant to me, but it is the funding that I lack, but I still learnt a lot from the assessment 🙂

Hi Cassie
Thanks, I'm pleased that the assessment was of use 🙂
I had TELDF on a transitional L5/S1 disc, it cost £10500 at the time.
Best regards
Matrick
I have more than one level and both sides 🙁 Imagine the cost!
I have more than one level and both sides 🙁 Imagine the cost!
Hi Cassie
It isn't that cost multiplied by how ever many areas need working on, big chunks of that cost were fixed hospital fees etc. which wouldn't change much if you were having multiple areas worked on. There is no avoiding the fact that it is a lot of money if one has to self fund and not everyone is in a position to do that or fund a bank loan to to it, but if it is remotely possible then it is worth every penny, many times over. I had to watch a work colleague have regular surgery for a similar condition and he had to have repeat operations, has scar tissue problems and still does not have a normal life.
I wish you all the best whichever route you finally take 🙂
Matrick
