I just wondered if anyone on here had seen the spinal team at Bath RUH as I am going next week for a second opinion. I am quite nervous as my old consultant wasn't the best and still claims my fusion was a success even though I am left in constant pain. Surgically he says he fixed me so therefore he has done his job. Surely this would be like a GP giving you medications but if they made you worse just saying oh well I did my bit, you now get on with it. He was such a charmer 🙂

wish i could help like i mentioned could it be your l3/4 that's now prolapsed?
im hoping for your sake that this new surgeon will investigate and sort you out,
your old surgeon probably didn't want to admit the faults that may have occured
love clare xxx well not long now getting butterflies xxxx
Hi Wend,
Getting a second opinion is the right thing to do and I hope they can give you the information you need. If surgically the fusion was a success - which is a possibility I am sure there are other avenues they can suggest to get you sorted out. Do keep us posted xx

ahh wend, its so unfair after what you've gone thru' and had done, i suppose all docs are like that, a gp can always change a persons medication, but a surgeon cannot undo a major operation if a surgeon has done their job, in most cases thats it, then on to next patient, if its a spinal operation gone wrong painwise then its a referal to pain management, and hopefully they can bring some relief, but its hard i know:(. i'm wishing you luck for next week,:) daveyam xxxxxxx
Hi Daveyam
Just wanted to say thanks, I will post what happens at my appt on Friday.

When I was offered a fusion I was told that I may not end up pain free and in fact it may be worse and that I may also end up in a wheelchair, I refused the op. The reason I mention this is because it seems that you have had the op and sadly have got unwanted results, in fact not that different from me without the fusion.
Just because mechanically the fusion works and there was no infection or long term problem it is wrong for the surgeon to discount pain as if it does not matter. After all presumably pain was the main reason for the op? So in major terms the op was a failure!
When you go to the new guy, I would make a list of all your questions, concerns and worries. Also write down what you want from the meeting and what results and when.
I find that I can get tongue tied and get distracted by the surgeon talking about some other aspect I am not concerned about and then it's like "time's up!"
You may be able to get a referral on the NHS to Mr Knight who specialises in Failed Back Syndrome as the NHS could be seen to have caused this problem?
roll on friday!
hi wend, roll on friday, and praying you can get some answers! congrat's on your 24th anniversary!. thats an achievement these days! its our 25th anniv in sept, if i'm resonably better i want to take my wife away for a couple of days. like you said, our other halves have a lot to put up with!. i'm hoping my 2nd scan app, having one with dye, lands this week! going to keep pestering them, as i always have done for years with differrent hospitals!.never gets you anywhere most of the time anyway!. blimey the weathers gone a bit cold! my eldest daughter and her b'friend flew to switzerland last monday,it was touching 90 degrees for most of the week, it should be around 70, she hates the heat, hence the destination,i told her to go up a mountain to cool down lol:D. yes do let me know how you go on at hosp on friday.
bye for now,daveyam,xxx!
Thanks for all your replys as always it's nice to get support from others. Cassie I am already working on the list you mentioned as am used to consultants bamboozling me with science then having no time for my questions. This time I will sit on him if I have to 😀
Daveyam that's funny about your daughter, I do hope she climbed a mountain to cool off lol. Tashanie a second opinion has been needed for a while now, but probably won't get much this week, I think until they do there own MRI they won't comment on my past treatment.
Take care everyone.

Hi Wend,
Whilst I can't offer an opinion on the spinal team at Bath RUH, I am here to offer my support, and hope that you get the answers you require, and the help you need 🙂
Let us know how you get on.
Thanks Jimmy 🙂

I haven't received a private message from you
I do know that I had problems when I first used it and thought I had sent a message but twice I hadn't. It was so annoying as had to retype it.
Could you try again please 😮
Also I will let you know how I get on tonight as my appt isn't until 4.30 and I then have at least an hour journey home. I think it's gonna hurt!!
Wend x

hi wend, will rewrite it, i must have sent it to myself with another short note that i sent in reply to your's i'm really sorry about that, it was the first time i had tried to send a message:o,ooops!
take care,daveyam,xxx:)
Well I saw a very nice consultant yesterday, was slightly awkward as he is on friendly terms with my old consultant. They are both from South Africa and went to the same uni and then placed in some of the same hospitals. He did ask why I was seeing him and I just said for a second opinion. Anyway I have to have a CT & MRI scan he will then see if there is anymore that can be done, he did tell me not to get my hopes up though but I think us back pain sufferers live in the hope we can be 'fixed', it's the only way I can get through most days.
I am feeling it today as in total was out of the house for four hours so my back and leg are shouting at me today, wish they would just shut up :p

hi wend, yes it would feel slighty awkward:o, but you have every right for a second opinion:), they would do exactly the same in your circumstances!. hope your ct and mri scan app's come thru' soon! yes we would all like to be 'fixed' like you said,if only!. we just keep having to plod on untill one day just maybe.
bye for now,daveyam.xxx
hope it's sent!

I know this post is outdated but I would like to know what happened with the results? I've been having back problems lately and my doctors can't see any problems with it. Perhaps it's because of my posture?
To Sharon
I am in a slightly different situation to you in that I have already had fusion surgery on my back so the scans are to make sure there is no problem with the metal work or that I haven't herniated another disc above or below my fusion. My scans will be in about 6 weeks and I will post my results.
Have they done an MRI Sharon? This is the only way to see if you have disc problems.

hi wend, sorry to hear you you've lost your appetite as well as everything else:(. i know exactly what you mean when you said that you "go into yourself" as you have recently, i'm exactly the same, which is why i have'nt been on here for a week or so, i too barely have an appetite and hardly eat anything during these episodes, it just happens!:(. hope your scan date lands soon, i read your doc's computer went down. it took 3 weeks for my hospital secretary to type a dictaphone from the surgeon that saw me to request a mylegram i mentioned to you awhile ago,it's outrageous when you read about how much money this country wastes:mad:. so i'm still more or less the same, stuck indoors almost all the time and laid down in, or on, my bed!.if you need to discuss anything and you want to send a private message please feel free to do so.
best wishes to you:), love, daveyam xxx
Hi Daveyam
Thanks for your message and yes I have been a bit quiet as feeling rubbish :(. My scan isn't until the beginning of August so just managing with buscopan and my usual pain killers. I am still struggling to eat, I normally manage a sandwich at lunch time but cannot eat lunch at all. The worse thing is we are off to Devon for a week on Friday with my kids, their partners and my Mum. I have been looking forward to this holiday for months and used the last of my medical retirement money to pay for it, it will probably be our last family holiday now my husband has given up work to care for me. I don't know about you but part of going on holiday for me is to eat good food, as I cannot eat anything with eggs, fat, red meat or even my fav scampi and chips I am feeling very fed up. At the mo I just feel I cannot join in with my family as I don't drink, can't eat and gave up smoking two years ago - I need to get a grip I think aarrgh :p.
Right enough miseries apart from feeling crap life is good, my oldest son graduates from uni on Wednesday. He did a maths degree and has got a place on a teacher training course in September. I am a very proud Mum as have three fab kids who all have gone to uni, something I wish I would have done. Also my mum has just finished chemo for bowel cancer and has been told the cancer has all gone yippee 🙂
I hope you get your Myelogram done soon as I know how frustrating it is waiting for appointments. Even after we have these tests done we still have to wait for an appt to see the consultant - at times it feels never ending eh? I am also stuck indoors on my bed, I cannot tolerate the heat like I used to, I think it might be to do with my medications. As I am writing to you I have two fans pointing at me trying to keep cool, but am still melting but I am glad it's sunny as it seems to make me happier.
Anyway take care and keep in touch,
Wend xxx
hi wend, are you on your hols now then, we had a hol in paignhton, devon in 1989, it was beautifull, oh how i wish i could turn the clock back!. like you said, you wont be able to do all the thngs that you normally do on your hols but please try and enjoy it as a week soon flys by!.and as you said, you had to use the last of your medical retirement money for it so its even more important to try and enjoy yourself:).
i too do gave up alcohol, i used to have 2 cans of lager a night to help me sleep but it interfered with my meds, plus i couldnt it! but i still smoke a few roll-ups and have a really good e-cig which my sis bought me from the famous bury market in lancashire, its only 10 quid for 4 small bottles of liquid for the e-cig and each bottle equals 400 cigs and its golden virginia flavour!.
thats fantastic news that your mum is cancer free:). you must be very proud of your kids and the things they have achieved!. our eldest has been promoted to in senior sales at her shopping mall:), and our youngest has just finished her second year in photography at our local uni, i'm so proud i could burst. our eldest was also proposed to by her boyfriend on their recent hol in switzerland:)!. he asked me for permission the day before they went away, bless him!
well its been 5 bloody weeks since i saw the surgeon and i still havent got my mylegram appointment for my lower back!. i had a fall in december and landed on my shoulder, that pain went, but since ive seen the surgeon its come back with avengeance! so im trying to get my ct mylegram to also cover my upper back as well as my lower, i have awful pain on the 4th disc down and the pain goes up my neck and down my arm into my fingers!. i'm wondering wether this new ailment started my original sciatic nerve pain worse? im not sure wether pain in the 4th disc down from the top of my back would do this? if anyone out there knows i would be gratefull for an answer:) but i was told i'd have to see the surgeon again!, that would take weeks to start from scratch again, what a nightmare!:(
anyway, thats enough moaning from me.do try and enjoy your hols:),
love, daveyam,xxxxx!

Hi Dave, I have cervical disc problems and when I was assessed by Mr Knight he explained how he has seen problems with cervical discs cause pain in the whole body depending on where they pinch the nerves.
Why not ring the surgeon's secretary and see if she can speak to him and get both parts done?
When you say 4th disc down do you exclude the small atlas as then that corresponds with the C6, so have a look here and see what you think

Hi Daveyam
Yep I was on hols and just got back today. I had a very quiet week and just stayed in the house we rented. We had lovely weather though and I managed to sort out laying out on a padded mattress a couple of times. The kids kept me entertained and all in all apart from the usual back issues I had a fab break away.
I came back today to the appts for my scans in Bath, they are next Friday so not long to wait now. I have a scan at my local hospital Thursday to check for gallstones so a busy week ahead.
Have you had a date yet? How have you been doing?
Anyway hope to catch up more soon, but off for my tea now.
Take care,
Wend xx

hi cascara, thankyou so much for the info:). i've been looking on the 'mayo clinic' website.it suggests 'brachial plexus injury, since a nasty fall i had in december, i landed on my shoulder, i've had intermitten pain, getting worse recently, i get pain in my neck and from my 4th disc down from the top of my back, the pain goes down c6 in my arm,and into c7 area into my 2 middle fingers. BUT, my original sciatic pain which i've had since 1995 and, after 2 disectomies, was left 10 times worse by dr knight, has become horrendous since the recent fall, keeping me 90% housebound. having said that the 2 may well be unconnected!
kind regards, daveyam.
Hi Wend
All the best for your two appointments.
Angela
Hi Angela
Thanks 🙂 I am hoping they show something or else I will have to accept there is nothing surgically that can be done. I am still going to Bristol hospital in 2 weeks to see about SCS so there is still hope of some relief.
Do you have a date for your op yet? I do appreciate how awful it is waiting for that letter to come giving you the date.
Take care,
Wend xxx
hi wend
iv'e not really been on here what's happening with you im so afraid now as pain is bad think i'll always be like this.
keep me informed of your results im out of the loop my head is all over the place
take care clare xxx
hi wend, i'm so glad you enjoyed your hols even though you were very limited in what you could do,at least you managed to get away with your family, a different scenery can brighton a person up a bit and i hope it did for you:). good luck with your 2 appointments, do keep us posted on how you went on. well it took 6 weeks for the hospital to recieve the request fo my mylegram, and thats only because they faxed it after the request got lost and i rang up to see if i was on the waiting lis,. pathetic!
take care, love, daveyam xxx
