Hi to all of you who know a bit about arthritis

I had no idea I would be posting in this thread but over the last 2 days I'v developed a very sore swollen joint in my left thumb. It woke me in the night and its absolute agony now soim going to the doctor today. Are there any tests I should request - like an X ray maybe?

I had a knock to this joint around 10 years ago and it's been a bit dodgy every since, hurting a bit from time to time andthen being fine. But never like this - swollen, red and so painful I can hardly do anything - like open bottles/get dressedor even type properly. Which is a problem cos Im a massage & aromatherapist.

Jst wondered what to expect in the way of tests / treatmentfrom GP.
Thanks for your help.

RE: sore swollen thumb joint

If your Dr is interested - I suspect all he will subscribe for you is an anti inflammatory - Ibrobrufen. If thats what you want, its actually cheaper to buy it directly from the Chemist than to pay for a presription. I have sore joints, take Brufen when really need it, take a daily MSM capsule. Arnica Gel really works as well. Don't forget the change in weather also affects the joints, so once the winter settles in, you may find the problem goes away.
Hope that is of some help

RE: sore swollen thumb joint

Thank you gilliebean - I thought I'd just update you.

She took one look at it and said she thinks its GOUT! She prescribed anti-inflammatory tablets as you thought and sent me fora blood test for uric acidand anX ray.

It got worse through yesterday and by last night Iwas worried it was an infection in the joint which I know should be treated urgently with antibiotics or cancause permanent damage. However, although it was very painful and seemed to be spreading, it wasn't throbbing in the way an infection does so I took some comfort from that along with the anti-inflamm.

Last night I requested Healing and asked all the Healing Angels to do their best overnight and this morning it's much better - much less painful &not so swollen so I'm a lot less worried. I've found a position where it doesn't hurt hardly at all and have put a splint on it to give it a rest till the inflammation dies down.

I do know what you mean about the weather affecting joints, but this is just the one swollen inflamed joint - I think that maybe I knocked it'cos it feels more like an injury to me.It could bearthritis but I'd be surprised if its gout.

thanks & bye
