I am a Student at Southampton Solent University studying a HND in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. For my final year project I have chosen to look at household problems for people suffering with arthritis.

I am looking for help in choosing an area to concentrate my study within the home. If you could offer any suggestions of problems you (or a relative) face on a day-to-day basis which you feel could be made easier with either a new product or the re-design of an old one I would be grateful.

When suggesting an idea if possible could you describe which part of the task you find difficult, as this will me obtain the best solution to the problem you face.

Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated

Kind Regards
John Allcock

Hello John

This is a good subject you have chosen. Where do I start, well dressing is a problem for a lot of arthritics, usual problem arms and shoulders, not being able to get arms back to get them into sleeves. Undoing bottles etc. I know there are lots of openers out there but a lot are no good if you haven't the strength to squeeze handles together. All situations are different. I have had an idea for years but never done anything about it. Imagine a person on a mobility scooter his/her spouse walking behind. I thought of a drop down seat with a drop down footplate with a couple of wheels on so they can ride together. If you would like to ask me anything else feel free.
