A client of mine has suddenly developed an allergy to a product of mine she has been using for 18 months with no problems before. She is using a cleanser, rose water toner and mosituriser and at the moment we can not work out which one is causing the problem. I'm more inclined to think it may be the toner due to the alcohol content but I was wondering why this problem has suddenly occured. Also does any one know of a different toner which might be more appropriate - I was under the impression that rose water was very gentle and suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.
Her symptoms are a swollen face, redness, itchyness and scaly skin.
Any help would be gratefully received

According to Gillian McKeith, you can develop an allergy by over-eating a particular item of food. I guess that she has over-used your product...

Some things can cause sensitivities over time or for instance if they enter a cut etc...

I thinnk jasmin is one of these, there are others.

my first question is how does she know its your products, if she has been using them regularly it could be something else?

RE: New Allergy developed

She first developed the reaction around 5 weeks ago. She stopped using the products for 10 days whilst things calmed down. She started using them again for a week with no problems. She then used different products for 2 weeks as she was going on holiday and didn't want to take the bulky bottles with her. No reactions on holiday with the alternative products. On returning she went back to my products and within 24 hours had redness developing so stopped using them and switched to Simple.
Yetsreday she came to me for a facial and had all the usual products but without essential oils (in case this was the problem). Within a few hours her face started to tingle and she has woken up today with a red, swollen face and scaly skin.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Are they products you make, or manufactured? have the manufacturers changed ANYTHING in the contents at all? It could be something taking her over a tolerance level. Any other new products of any sort she has started using? Try using one of the products at a time.
good luck,

the products are manufactured and then I add essential oils to them. As far as I an aware the manufacturer has not changed anything and I have been giving her a product from a 4 litre container which now has less than a litre in (what I'm trying to say is that she has used the same product for a couple of months). She has not used any new products at all but she does have a new pillow - could this be contributing at all?

Has she still got the old pillow? if so, get her to try using that and see what happens!
Something may have gone past its best in the 4ltre container?
Skin takes ages to squirrel out whats going on, if at all!

RE: New Allergy developed

Hi Annie,

Good suggestion about trying the old pilow to see what happens. I work with a colleague who is an allergy specialist, and she tells me about someone who came to see her for allergy testing. This lady sat near a pillow made of a material that my colleague mentioned but I can't rem, ember it now. Anyway, the client's test showed an allergy-like reaction to that material, and my colleague found out that the client had it in her stuffed toys at home which were causing the symptoms!

Having said all that, I recently treated myself for a newly-developed allergy and cleared it. This was to cinnamon, which had never affected me before a few months ago. It was the circumstances of exposure to cinnamon about three months ago which brought on the allergy. Our circumstances change all the time, so it should not be too much of a surprise if we suddenly become reactive to a substance that was previously OK for us. Then it is just a matter of detective work and treatment/elimination.

Another thought or two about your products. Maybe they have a very slight bacterial/other organism content that has increased with time and that your client is sensitive to. Also, your client may have built up this allergic reaction as she was exposed to more of the product incrementally. Is there any way you can use a different product for her and see what happens? I know I never went back for a facial after a beautician rubbed the wrong thing into my face many years ago. I was pizza-faced for 7 months and had to wear heavy makeup every day to cover the damage. If it wasn't so traumatic, I would have sued her.

RE: New Allergy developed

Allergies can work in mysterious ways. If the product is manufactured you can never tell if there has been even slight contamination from some other form of chemical. Sometimes alcohol can have an effect, especially if she is chemically overloaded.

Sometimes (and this happens more than you think), if you try something new on your body(that you turn out to be allergic to) and it is mixed with something else (you are not allergic to) you can develop an allergy to the thing that you are not allergic to simply because your body has associated it with the allergen.

What are the ingredients of the moisturiser? Are there any non alcohol toner alternatives?

RE: New Allergy developed

Allergies are most likely to develop when your body is under some kind of stress - emotional, physical, etc.

During this time the body relates to things (eg food) around it. So later on when they come in contact with those same things so the body is triggered into an allergic reaction.

Think back to when the allergy started and see if you were under any particular stress.
